DISASTER on the allotment kitchen garden.
The nasturtium seedlings will all be killed by the frost but in spring any seeds under the soil will germinate and you can simply take the best ones and transplant them to where you want them to grow and pull out those you don't want - I do this every year in my polytunnel having sown the seeds only once years ago. They are great for all pollinators. Also to create a naturalistic look in your wildlife area plant bulbs in groups of 3,5,7 etc rather than straight lines. Nature doesn't really do straight lines.
Thanks the nasturtiums have just started popping up in my front garden from seeds from last year was very surprised. Hopefully they die back this year so none for next year. Or I will move the seedling to where I want them. I think I didn't put the bulbs in straight lines I may be wrong 😂 thanks
I used to use a bulb planter but went back to using a trowel, it was easier
Yea my soil defently didn't work very well with it
I really like your bug hotel, it would look lovely nestled in some bushes around the pond. Sweet Alyssum are great plants for around the pond too, as they they spread fantastically, last ages and the bees love them. Plot is looking great 😊
Thank you. trying to get and much homes for the bugs as possible hopefully it will help for next year. Thank you
I use grates like the ones off those blow away greenhouses 😂 to keep things from eating my tulips. The critters don’t seem to pick on the daffodils as much 👍. Our backyard looks the same the city trees blew thousands of leaves 🍂 on the driveway 😮. I know it sounds like loads of work but as there’s nothin in it yet perhaps moving the pond to the opposite corner away from the trees 😢😢. All doing well Anthony spring will be a welcome thing, Ali ☔️☔️🇨🇦
I might put some netting down keep things away if they start to eat them. I know need to get the kids on the plot to pick all the leaves up for me just getting a bit cold for them the leaves hit the whole plot branches fall down all the time
Your pond need levelling up.good luck with your tulips. Mice, rats ans squirrels love them. Best to cover with a lot of soil. I look forward to seeing your spring flower garden.
Yea definitely redoing the pond after watching back. Tempted to put a layer of compost over the top stop them being ate thank you. I can't wait either
Firstly i would empty as much water out into tubs/buckets until it is light enough for you to level it up mate, then build your ramp, with either wood or bits of broken flag stones making sort of steps up to the waters edge. Then refil it with the original water you had in but dont fill it right to the top. I use a kiddies little fishing net to clear my pond, before that i just used to throw an old bit of netting on top of the pond and drag it to one end, ( gloves on ) it may pay you to put reeds around the pond or something actually in it to aerate it. If you want to put a wooden ramp in, i would put a few thin lats going across the ramp to form a sort of ladder, so if a hedgehog falls in it can get onto the ramp but it isnt going to slide back down into the water. 👍
Yea definitely going to need to empty it out didn't realise how off it was until watching back. I have plenty rocks I might use to build one. Think I might get a net to scoop out all the rubbish in the future thanks
How many do you think you could stack?
@@Seek2be I would risk more than 6 if you didn't have support down the middle
you need to put a log or similar in the pool so any creatures that fall in can get out.
Yea we totally forgot while doing this. There is a part where it looks like things can climb out put I will definitely put on in thanks
And a lovely model she is 🤭🤭. I don’t think I could handle all the rules on allotments I have enough rules from Gerald 😂. You have done a good job Anthony and Crystal so don’t lose hope. Have a super day, Ali 🥶🇨🇦
There are pages and pages of rules I didn't realise how many. I need to message them about putting fruit trees on the plot I have to have permission first. Crystal is pulling her weight on the plot and I am happy lol. We won't lose hope thanks
Anthony, the rule of 75% cultivated applies basically after having the plot for 12 months, it just means that after 12 months as a tenant you must have NO LESS than 75% cultivated. You can if you wish be 100% cultivated. Put some flowers in pots on your pathways and just dotted about. Slugs can be hiding in your woodchip mate as the woodchip will retain moisture and slugs love damp areas. You definitely need more water butts. Looking forward to seeing your new growing season next year mate 👍
R right I should have it like that within 12 months. One of the other plot owners have been kicked off they just let it get too over grown. Suppose I will buy another water butt next year hopefully won't rain as much looking forward to next year's growing. Think I will use something to take the slugs out next year
@@JacobsonFamilyAllotment Just see if you can get some of those 220ltr blue barrels Anthony, lots or car main dealers get them full of adblue , once empty they throw them out. They just need a good rinse out mate then they are good to go.
Hi Mate, got your work cut out there, lucky find all that guttering handy may be more water butts, Leeks are looking good. keep up the good work catch you soon take care
Definitely got my work cut out for me I dread digging up any part of the plot never know what I will find. Definitely reuse the pipe for something
I say sorry to worms (and other creatures), too. We're so British! 😂
Your video reminded me about planting out my garlics. I grew one elephant garlic last year, so planning on using that this year to grow on hopefully 🤞 Never done shallots, so I might try them as well. Hopefully the weather gets better for us all 😂 Have a good weekend. Mark.
@@GrowingWithPlot21 we go through a lot of garlic so wanted to get it out straight away was just waiting for October. I tried shallots once but didn't work. Let's hope next year is a perfect growing year. Have a good weekend too. Anthony
Don’t know what happened to our sunflowers this year they have just been so late and poor havent they
Don't know if it's the lack of sun or too much rain. The roots on my plant were tiny. Hopefully try again next year and let's hope for sun
@@JacobsonFamilyAllotment both ! Lock up your woodchip lol I’m sure they just thought was communal chip benefit of the doubt and all that
Great update Anthony, good luck with the garlic and shallots , mine are going in in about 2 weeks ,keep up the good work mate
Thanks. I thought the weather is only going to get worse so I put them in now. I still need to put my flower bulbs in for next year. Thanks I will
Shame people feel the need to steal from other gardeners 😢. Perhaps they thought it was “allotment” available. Great job on the sowing and planting for winter Anthony 👍, hope it all grows well. Have a super week, Ali 🌞🥶🇨🇦
Yea it's a shame I am hoping they havnt and some how the chip has just been moved about and just looks like less. Thanks I am trying to keep stuff growing all year round. You have a good week too thanks
Worms are good don't worry about it. If their escaping then the will go to other areas of the garden which is probably a good thing.
True I just want them in the compost bin to make it fast 😂 if it even works that way 😂. But true I do need the soil to be better thanks
Hi Mate, not the best of weather, but these jobs have go to be done. Your garlic should take it's a very hardy a bit like onions. Your wood chippings get them in your allotment to stop those thieving hands. keep up the good work take care
It's not been the best weather but needs must. Always a worry putting something in and just waiting for it to grow especially outside. Should be getting them in soon. Thanks take care too
I would cover the mulch. Sometimes, you can't get to it right away.I would put a sign on it letting others know it's NOT a free for all.😅
I am moving all of it into the plot and probably will sit there a bit while I expand the plot. There are other piles on the plots that haven't been touched just mine. Wonder how nice I should make the sign 🤣
@@JacobsonFamilyAllotment 😊
@@JacobsonFamilyAllotment i know how polite mine would be mate, not polite at all. What if you had actually paid to have them dropped off, its theft plain and simple. I would walk around looking at plots with no piles of woodchip outside, and see if they have fresh woodchip inside, they would be the ones to keep an eye on in my opinion Anthony mate.
Regarding your worms, One of the most common reasons for worms to gather at the top of compost bins is when it’s about to rain. Before it begins to rain, the barometric pressure (air pressure) in the atmosphere drops, and both earthworms and even compost worms can sense this, as they are highly sensitive to changes in barometric pressure. If it rains, the earthworms and compost worms run the risk of their soil or compost environment becoming waterlogged, which can cause them to drown, or more correctly, suffocate, as they actually breathe through their skin. When soil becomes saturated with water, it contains very low levels of oxygen because the water pushes the air out of the spaces between soil particles, which make it difficult for worms to breathe, triggering their instinct to move upwards to avoid drowning/suffocation. This natural survival mechanism, commonly referred to as “rain migration,” also occurs in the wild, where earthworms often surface in large numbers after a rainstorm., A little tip mate, if you have a lot of cloves, lie them out on the bed, that way you will know if you have the space for them all, the ideal depth is approx 4" for elephant or giant elephant garlic, smaller cloves 2" deep, then a stretched hands span apart from tip of little finger to tip of the thumb. Both sets of my cloves ( XXL elephant and Giant Elephant ) are bigger than standard elephant garlic mate. I will also be growing standard elephant garlic as well though Anthony.Speaking of rakes, Asda at the metro centre had them on offer £1.12p each, i got 4 of them, one for each of my 2 plot neighbours and 2 for myself as spares, you are mre than welcome to have one if you want it mate. Great video mate 👍
@@Jimmy.Plot.41.b and here's me thinking worms just eat soil crazy what some things can do hopefully they stay around I was really happy when I found compost worms lol. Thanks luckily I had enough space for the garlic in that bed I think I gave it enough room I feel like I might have planted the elephant garlic not that deep when I think of it. Think I need to pop to Asda then to get a rake it's really needed thanks
@@JacobsonFamilyAllotment If they have no rakes left mate you are more than welcome to one of my spares
@@Jimmy.Plot.41.b thanks I will have a look after work
What I know about worms coming to the surface is because they can detect vibrations in the ground. The vibrations that raindrops make resemble the vibrations that, for example, a mole makes as it approaches. The worms then flee to the surface. Maybe that is what's going on. It has been raining a lot lately. But the compostheap has a lid on, so I am also just guessing now. The garden with the woodchips looks great :)
That's a good thought would make sense why they were all around the lid surprised they got up there I just hope they go back in. Thanks it looks loads better with new chip down
Congrats on over 1K subs! 🎉
Thank you
Hi,mate and well done on your 1000 subscribers, summer has gone and time to change the allotment for autumn and winter veg. Carrots can be hard to grow, garlic should grow well. Catch you soon take care
@@shaun30-3-mg9zs thanks. Feels like we haven't had a summer. So I have hear I will keep trying to grow carrots. I have plenty of garlic to go out will be doing them next month. You take care too
Carrots are one of the hardest vegetables to grow put them in containers and keep them of the ground about 1m
Going to have to I have went back up and they have all been eaten by rabbits
I salute your work ethic & persistence!
Thank you takes a lot
Congrats on reaching 1000 subscribers mate 👍 I think a lot of your damage is bird related. Still plenty can be sown yet Anthony.A lot of the weeds will die off with the winter and that will give you a better chance to get on top of it with regards to your paths ( cardboard/woodchip ) also you will find more space to add extra beds. Looking forward to your full years growing next year Anthony, have a great weekend mate
Thanks mate. So what do you think just net everything to keep the birds off.yea hopefully when the weeds die off get another feel for where stuff is going to go and clear some of them flags to make a bath to the gate. I can wait to get a full year under my belt see what can be done. Let's hope it's a bit more sunny next year
@@JacobsonFamilyAllotment If it was me i would be netting everything, once things like onions and sporing onions become established you can remove the netting, but cauli, sweetcor, swede etc i would net, but you need netting with smaller holes than you are using, butterflies can get through that type of netting and lay their eggs on whatevers underneath. I just use scaffold debris netting, its not as fine as environmesh but its a lot lot cheaper hahaha.
Congratulations on 1k awesome stuff and very much appreciated the mention will definitely have a proper catch up next time I see you if your at your plot Saturday will get the wood chip guy to pop over as always awesome vid mate keep it up I hit a snag so uploading mine in the morning lol

Hi mate you wasn’t up for to long where can I reach you off this without putting your personal info on here lol
@@McGregorsFamilyAllotment yea was just up there with the mother showing her about. I should have an email in the channel deception email that I can sort stuff out
Congratulations 🎉 on your first 1k keep at it. Could be bird damage 😢 always something trying to eat our veg. If you haven’t already you could leave the beans to get seed for next season. It is always a learning curve not many people start out with all wins Anthony, the trick is to keep at it. Have fab day, Ali 🌦️🇨🇦
Thank you didn't think I would get to 1k. Yea might be I did see a lot of crows around could have been them. I pulled them all up and they are in my compost bin now I still have plenty of seeds at home too many crystal would say 🤣 let hope next season is better
Time to change the summergarden into a autumn/wintergarden :) You still have some nice produce going. Next year you start with a whole year unlike this year, You started half way into the season. Looking forward to what is coming. Greetings from The Netherlands
Definitely time to change hopefully I can keep things going through winter. I can't wait to have a whole year to grow. Thank you so much. Wow 😲 Netherlands glad you enjoy
👍🏼
That wall where the water pipe comes down is crying out for a lean-to greenhouse. I would also use that area for a shed and storage. Also, it’s not a bad thing because some plants do like a bit of shade, so all in all it gives you options that other plots out in the open don’t have, it would have been my number one choice, I think you did really well. 👍🇬🇧
@@steveandsherilyn7543 thanks been looking into a lean-to greenhouse for that wall actually it gets a good amount of sun throughout the day. Definitely need some storage taken even home with me isn't fun. Yea looking back I think this plot would have been my number one pic too
Occupational hazard having a allotment totally worth it tho 😂
It’s coming along nicely m8 well done
Thanks it's getting there
I’ve just realised we’re on the same plot small world lol
@@McGregorsFamilyAllotment 🤣 really small world. Have you had the plot long
@@JacobsonFamilyAllotment about 6 months now we are on plot 4
@@McGregorsFamilyAllotment r yes think that plot was my 1st or 2nd choice this one was my 3rd
So rewarding when you get your first grow
It definitely is the kids were so happy when we got some
Badgers poop after they dig. Bean with black fly use wash up liquid, water and lemon juice spray, ok for white fly.
Possibly badgers I have seen a few on a night around the area. I haven't had much trouble with fly's with the beans even after this video never really had many thanks for the tips definitely use them if I have trouble with them
Just saw you were at 999 so thought i would make it 1,000. Well deserved!🎉 As a fellow first year allotment grower, everyone is saying it’s the worst year ever, so if we can grow this year, next year will be easy im sure 😂. Seed catalogues and garden centres are dangerous things i have found… only thing i found for slugs was beer traps, trouble is they need emptying every few days. Keep up the hard graft💪
thank you so much and welcome. yea its not been the best year to start has it hopefully next year we can grow loads and we have a long summer you have to drag me out of a garden centre yea need to get the slug killing stuff for next year. thank you so much
Yeah, apparently it hasn’t been very fruitful (excuse the pun), i didn’t consider when following Mr Dowdings techniques that you need to remortgage your house to pay for compost, so i have 6/7 daleks full of horse manure now, and a homemade hot composter at home, to hopefully have enough to not buy any next year, and i have vowed to not buy any plug plants next year… but we will have to see on that one. All the best 👍
@@steveboz5641 yea I didn't think how much I would have to buy aswell in compost I think I have gotten 20 bags so far this year hopefully my compost will ready for next year.
Hi I’m new to your channel I just wanted to know is this video done in the early part off this year? Just because I’m thinking you planting seeds so late. Also I like long videos.😊
Hi welcome. No this was done beginning of this week. There is still some seeds you can plant. Some salads leaves cabbage broccoli and some other over wintering stuff. Thanks for letting me know how long you like videos too
@@JacobsonFamilyAllotment thank you for your quick reply and thanks for the information.

Peg your netting to your poles with clothes pegs
@@dolly4891 thanks I will either "borrow" some off the other half or buy some today
I like how down to earth and honest your videos are. They're not insta perfect and i just enjoy your failings as well as successes. Keep it real, love it!😊 the Netting literally had me laughing out loud... we've all done that! 😂
Thank you so much. I try to show what it's actually like to have a plot glad people enjoy it. I really should have thought about how to do the netting more shouldn't I 🤣
Longer videos for me Anthony, you can cover more topics/issues etc. Those poles/canes you put in the ground are gonna end up ripping your net, either put poles/canes across to connect them or pop a pop bottle over the top of each one. Rome wasnt built in a day, you are doing well and it will take shape as the months pass by.
Thanks will do. Yea one of the poles but a hole in already probably get some pop bottles to stop it again. Thanks taking time but getting there
I actually found a caterpillar 🐛 in my vegepod 😮 how the heck it got in there I don’t know. Great recycling idea Anthony for a mini brassica cage. We get tree “snow” in spring from the birch type trees and they are all over my beds. Yep being on cold days so the cabbage whites piss off 🤣🤣. Have a super week, it’s all a learning curve so enjoy the process too, Ali 🌧️🇨🇦
I come home after this and one had hitched a ride on my shoe 🤣. Thanks I do need to invest in some hoops for my netting that make shift cage should do for now. The temp is dropping so hopefully they will go now. Thanks have a good week too
Hi Mate, your doing a great job, a bit of a fight with the netting may be you might need to put bars on top of those poles linking the together to stop the net ripping in the wind. keep up the good work and catch you soon, take care
@@shaun30-3-mg9zs ha yea that netting put up a bit of a fight. I did go up today and the poles have put a hole in the netting but I am hoping it will be ok. Thanks for watching
Thanks again. I like the longer vlogs but will watch them all 😊
@@essiev6397 thank you. Will definitely be doing some more longer vlogs as well. Thank you for watching
Get yourself some tent pegs to peg your netting down more securely! You could also wind some twine tightly around the top of the stakes to hold it taught. It is all hardwork on an allotment and an ongoing learning curve!
Yea the other half had told me to use pegs but I totally forgot thank you will pop them in next time I am up good idea with putting twine at the top. Definitely a lot of hard work
