Okanagan Valley have some AMAZING trails!
I head out for some solo laps and check out the trails in Smith Creek in West Kelowna, Okanagan. These trails are awesome, well maintained, well marked and a ton of fun.

I head out for my first ride after my crash. My back is still a bit tight but much better and finally pain free.
Started off with a bang!

Freshly serviced lowers and air can on the fork I take my Trance out for a shakedown ride. The bike felt fantastic, so I decided to push it a bit and paid for it. Hope you enjoy this one!

Hell yeah awesome location. Loved the footage thanks Ivan!
Thanks for watching! I could have happily spent more time riding out there, it would have been a blast to ride those trails a few times, get a bit more comfortable and do all the features.
Awesome trail, video coming soon? 👋😁
This was an old short I forgot to publish from a video I did a couple months ago. It’s linked in the short under related videos. I have an awesome video coming out tomorrow morning of one of my rides in the Okanagan! Great trails out there
@@ivanmtb00 Looking forward to seeing it!
acabo de adquirirlos para mi bici de trail 140mm 130mm atras según mis cálculos deberian ser perfectos para la popuesta de mi trek fuel ex
That’s awesome! They’re a great all around tire. I think you’ll like them!
That was quite a wipe-out, always a risk when you push it on trails like that! Glad you weren't bashed up more seriously. I think your speed after the crash was like mine all the time - with age comes caution. Some great trails in your neighbourhood - you are very lucky if these are on your doorstep.
Thanks! Yeah I’m super lucky I have these so close. That crash could have been much worse, I came out pretty lucky overall. Took about a week of rehab, stretching etc. to feel about 90% and after about 3 weeks I’m 100% back to normal (thankfully). I know what you mean about being more cautious! It’s all that risk vs reward. Sometimes I bite off more then I can chew and get humbled lol. Thanks for watching!
Glad to see you are recovering well after the crash and still keeping up a decent pace. Nice ride and video.
Thank you! Looking forward to more riding this summer. I should have some video ready soon of my trip to the Okanagan Valley. Great trails out that way.
Great commentary and honest review, just ordered a set, they'll be hear in a couple days, I'm an old guy 74 in CO and just bought the ramblas, I already made some mods and thought a good set of tires would be mo betta!. I just don't want to break down 3 miles from the trailhead so I also ordered new tubes and am gonna slime em and call it a day, we'll see
That’s great! I just had to re-tape my wheels and these were super easy to set up tubeless. If your looking for reliability then I highly recommend tubeless and bring a spare tube. Locally we have lots of cactus and I have accidentally rode right over one without getting a puncture. You have way more protection unless you slice a sidewall.
Thanks for sharing your morning ride with us Ivan, enjoyed it very much!
Thanks for watching!
Never fun to have the front washout when leaning into it on a turn! I've had it happen on a few trails this year specifically going fast on berms. Funny thing though my scariest fall so far was in Banff on a green trail but had that shale almost kitty litter gravel and instead of the shoulder and knee I smoked my head happy I walked away from that one at the end of the ride before going to the nordic center too🤦🏼♂️
That’s good to hear you came out alright! Funny I seem to crash harder on the more chill trails then the difficult ones!
Nice recovery ride and gorgeous weather!
Thanks!! The weather has been awesome lately. Felt good to get back on the bike after some rehab on the back. My shoulder still needs a bit of work but it’s getting there!
@@ivanmtb00 Great to hear, looking forward to seeing more footage of your amazing country thanks Ivan!
Thank you!

Thanks for that!
Love my Torrent. I'm 5'11 and ride a medium frame, and its perfect if you're an old-time BMXer. You mentioned the Tektro brakes in your review. I considered upgrading the Tektro brakes, but since they're 4-pisotn they stop me rather quickly. They are quite good brakes. Really, the only thing I upgraded was the fork -- 160mm travel Marzochi Z1 air. No need to do anything else.
That’s awesome! I have been thinking about upgrading the fork as well but honestly I’m pretty happy with it. It surprised me along with the brakes! I’ve really grown to like those Tektros
@@ivanmtb00 cool. You do you, and be a slave to trends
The Z1 is a great fork, if I upgrad I’ll likely go against the grain and do a Suntour Durolux
That happened to me a couple weeks ago I didn't even know what happened but I went over the bars and bruised ribs, like getting hit by Mike Tyson
That’s rough! Man it happens so fast. One minute your totally fine and then you realize your not on your bike anymore
@@ivanmtb00 so there I was, out riding, mining my own business. All of a sudden a tree jumped out in front of me and accosted me. The bruise across my chest looked like it was made by a bat. Totally unprovoked, the tree chose violence that day.
@@ivanmtb00 the worst part is I don't think anyone even got to see it
Of course! It’s funny no one saw this crash either but literally 3min after I crashed 4 people walked by. As I was crashing I was looking at my bike bounce and get massive air a thought crossed my mind… “this crash must look spectacular” haha
@@ivanmtb00 ha ha. Brilliant
What bike is that?
It’s a Giant Trance 3. Have a few upgrades on it, 27.5” wheels, 140mm/160mm travel. 64.5 HTA, super fun bike!
I had an off day on my Norco, scuffed up that sweet green paint job. I was in a bad mood the entire day. Still pisses me off just thinking about it. Ha ha.
That’s rough! Luckily my Torrent came out pretty good after this one! My Trance on the other hand has a few marks on it.
I wish I had a commute like that.. down hill both ways. Ha ha
Haha I’m pretty lucky! Short downhill and a short climb both ways.
enjoyable video bro, but a lot of growth on those trails can cause a fall. Wondering how hard is it to ride back up?
Thank you! Everything local is overgrown this time of year. We have also had a good amount of rain. It wouldn’t be a terrible climb up but there are much better ways to get back to the top
Shit looks fun. I wish I had long flowy trails like this in my area.
Thank you! I’m pretty lucky to have this 10min from my house!
Wow very nice 👍 from France
Thank you!
I was wondering where those trails go. Very nice.
Haha there’s lot of them too!
Thanks as well!
Great spot again, sorry you had a fall but it looks like your wheel bit into some soft stuff?
I think I had my weight a tad too far back and when my front tire got off trail a tad and hit the grass it washed out on me. Hard to say for sure though, happened really fast. Feeling better now, after about a week I had mobility with some mild pain and 2-3 weeks now I’m close to 100% but my shoulder is still tight.
Looks like a super nice spot!
Thanks! It’s lots of fun!
Looks like the entire trail is soft stuff!
It’s all loose over hard pack clay. Off trail it’s super loose and can be pretty soft in some areas
underrated
Thank you!
💯
Great footage thanks for sharing this, sorry about your shock fork blowing a seal!
Thanks for watching! I was pretty surprised to see that. Serviced the lowers when I got home and replaced the air can. All is well now!

Thanks! The GoPro effect looks like it’s pretty flat haha. It’s a pretty loose section too.
Awesome footage, what camera were you using?
Thank you! It’s. GoPro Hero 10! I really like it, it’s super easy to use. Plus the stability and picture quality is amazing.
@@ivanmtb00 Thanks for the reply, GP10 it is! 😎
Anytime! I really like it, I haven’t looked closely at the 11 or the Insta360 so I’m not sure how they would compare but this one has been awesome for me.
@@ivanmtb00 The 360 would be a good option also, or the latest DJI Action Cam, heard their really good also, but what you have now gives great footage. 🍿

Thank you!
This is awesome, where abouts in Crowsnest pass are these trails, and are they shuttle or pedal access?
These are in the York Creek area, you can drive up part of the way to the staging area but it’s pedal access. Not a bad climb though.
I have a Rocky Mountain Instinct for full suspension and a Norco Torrent A2 for my hardtail. Its like asking which one of your kids is your favorite. I just love my Canadian bikes. Both handle the the Texas Hill Country rocks and steep trails with such ease. Like my kids I love them the same. But if it comes down to between my kids and my bikes, well we're gonna need to have a conversation. Ha ha. Just kidding. Everyone knows your bikes always come first. Ha ha.
Lmao! My kind of humour! I know what you mean about bikes vs kids… I mean between bikes. Haha I couldn’t pick a favourite between the two either. If I needed a new FS tomorrow the Instinct would be high on my list! They’re awesome bikes!
Have you ever had problems with the headset making a clicking sound after a few use? I bought mine last month and it started developing clicking sound on the front headset part. Thanks
Sounds can be hard to diagnose. I had the internal cables tapping that was driving me nuts which is significantly better now. I did have a creak on this bike and others a while ago. I dropped my fork and put some fresh grease on the headset, took apart my bars/stem and cleaned that up adding a bit of grease to each bolt. It’s been quiet ever since. In hindsight I think it was the stem clamp.
Probably my next bike lol! How do you like the fork.. is it heavy, noisy, stiff or loose? Also on paper it looks like it may need a longer dropper post… like around a 170mm dropper? Sorry for all the questions, just really interested in this bike
No worries! I actually really like the fork! On paper it is heavy but I don’t notice it when I’m riding. It’s small bump sensitivity is awesome being a coil and it still takes the big hits well. I have been tempted picking up the heavier spring since I’m 205lbs but honestly that’s not picking. Servicing is incredibly easy the damper is non-serviceable but if there are problems you can pop in a new one for around $100 Canadian. It’s kind of a set and forget fork, I’m not one to be constantly messing with fork settings. Suntour also has an upgrade program so you can get a discount on new forks if you choose to upgrade. I have their Aion35 PCS on my Trance and it’s a solid fork too. The internal cable routing does rattle a bit on fast sections of singletrack with chatter like brake bumps. I fixed with some shrink wrap around the brake hose and the Jagwire insulation around the shifter cable along with some zip ties. Funny bc I never noticed the rattle riding tech. The dropper is a bit short, I’m 5’9 and have a 200mm dropper on it now. Other upgrades are PNW bars, grips, pedals, saddle and a 203mm rotor. To my surprise I really like the Tektro brakes! They modulate extremely well, have great bite and come with semi metallic pads new. People complain that the lever is really long but again I don’t notice riding. Other complaints is that they preform like garbage but they likely just need a bleed if that’s the case, their performance drops a fair bit if they need a bleed. If you keep up with maintenance then it’s a non-issue.
@@ivanmtb00 Thank you! I finally got a FS bike after years of wanting one and now I realized that I don’t really like it lol! The new bike is great but just not as fun as a good hardtail for me.
@@scstinger5 I have a Full Suspension as well and love that bike too. They’re both just different and couldn’t pick a favourite. That being said I totally understand how for some they would prefer one vs the other
Such interesting project. Very nice. I am currently looking at fx3 2024 and ds3 gen 5.
Thank you! Your bikes complement each other well! All my other bikes are mountain bikes. A friend of mine has the FX 3 and he really likes it as well!
I feel the dopamine rushhhh 🔥
This trail is a blast! I just wish it was longer. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Good stuff ! Thank you ! I run all Schwalbe tires ! Love them !
That’s great! They make some awesome tires. I have recently tried the Continental Kryptotals on my Full Suspension and they have been excellent!!
What year is your bike? I have a 2022 FX-4 and was thinking about wider tires for the rail trails but wasn't sure how wide I could go. I think it currently has 32s on it
Hey there! Mine is a 2019. I tried to look up your bike and the trek website only shows the FX 4 Sport in 2022. It says it came with 40mm tires and will fit up to 42mm wide without fenders. What I did was grab an Allen key and run it between the tire and the frame to see how much space I had with my current tires. You want to leave yourself at least 4mm on each side of the tire. With my current setup I was 6mm on one side and about 4.5mm on the other. Also check out tire height and see if there is lots of space where the top of the tire contacts the frame.
@@ivanmtb00 Oh thanks. I didn't know Trek still listed old models on their website. I bought it in 2022 but it might be a 2021. They discontinued the FX-4 but it showed on Trek's website in 2022 when I bought this one. I know the following year for 2023 the FX-3 was specked the same as the discontinued fX-4. I'll look at the FX-3 because I think they're still using the same frame. Thanks
@@ivanmtb00 I found it archived on Trek's website. They list 35mm with fenders and 38mm without. I'm guessing mine is the same frame as yours, and you say 40s work so maybe I'll give the 40s a try then. Currently it has 32s on it but they are inadequate for the rail trails. Thanks again
@@jimdent351 I had a look at the 2021 and I bet that’s the one. I just can’t remember when trek did a refresh on their frames. The geometry looks really similar but it’s off by a few mm. For the 2021 they call for 38mm max. Mine was the same and I was able to squeeze in 40’s and honestly I could have likely gone 42mm
@@ivanmtb00 Thanks for your help. I will be looking at 40s to try on it because I believe they'll probably fit. If not, I'll just return them.
Noice!
Thanks!
The only thing these brakes are missing is nice levers. Small, 1-finger and most important with a kind of servo wave for shorter free travel. Though all of that doesn't affect braking characteristics. Also nice that these brakes come with ebc yellow stuff semi-metallic brake pads.
I know what you mean! I like the Shimano levers I have on my Trance but when I’m out riding I don’t really notice these being particularly uncomfortable or anything. I do have them set in a bit more on my bars compared to my Shimano’s so I can 1-finger brake a bit easier. Those factory pads are awesome too! I wore them out and threw in a set of resin pads I had laying around but I miss the semi’s.
Bei sentieri, devo venirci a fare qualche video per il mio canale !
Thank you! I’ll have to check out your channel!
@@ivanmtb00 🙂
Keep posting, love seeing these trails.
Thank you! Will do!
Im 5 10 but I got shorter legs than usual lol do you think a medium is too small for me?
Hard to say. I think you would still be comfortable on a Large. The bike has a really low standover and short seat tube length so even with short legs you should still fit just fine. My wife has ridden my Torrent as well and she’s 5’7. Your best bet would be to sit on a medium and a large if that’s possible.
I tested the medium today at ascent it was the only one they had, surprisingly it felt very comfortable. Picking it up next week :) thanks!
That’s awesome! Your going to love the bike!!
I've often wondered. Do the quoted max tire sizes include the ISO 4mm clearance standard? My Hybrid states 35 mm Max but at measured 36 mm I have 7mm minimum clearance. I suspect if you were willing to settle for 2mm clearance 40s would be a nonissue.
The bike came factory with 35mm and spec sheet says max without fenders is 38mm. Right now with the 40mm tires I have 4-5mm on the drive side and I think 6mm-ish on the non-drive side (if I remember right). I think frame manufactures are measuring with a side of caution. I could have likely squeezed in a 42mm tire and still be fine. I also looked at gravel bikes and it looks like majority come with 38-42mm from factory. I figured if I need more then that I’m likely better off on one of my mountain bikes.
@ivanmtb00 My tight spot is vertical clearance. Probably could clear a set of 6.50B x 47 if I switched wheel sizes.
Ah yeah that can be a factor too. I’ve been lucky with vertical and still have a good amount of space. What Hybrid are you on?
@@ivanmtb00 Felt Verza Speed 40.
Nice bike! Even a 35mm gravel tire would do pretty good. I rode the factory Bontrager tires on some singletrack and gravel and it was fine. The new tires are better but I think it’s more the tread then the width.
Nice to see the TrekFX on different terrain. Nice upgrades too!
Thank you! It’s a fun bike for sure!
Which fx is that? Do you think it is worth it to go for the fx6?
This is the base model FX1. I have made some upgrades to it (1x10 Deore drivetrain, brake pads, tubeless gravel tires, new rear wheel). The FX6 is a great bike, carbon frame, nice components, disc brakes. It’s in the price point where I would also check out drop bar gravel bikes as well unless you have decided on flat bars.
I’ve had the FX6 for 3 months now and love it. I modified it a little. First thing I did was reverse the stem so I am less upright. Then switched the grips to ergonomic combo grip with short bar ends for an extra hand position. I switched the tires to Specialized Pathfinder S-Works tubeless 42mm. (Big difference) Then got Bontrager carbon handlebar & seatpost which takes a bit of the edge off the bumps. It reminds me a little of my old Kestrel mountain bike from the late 80’s. A bit lighter I think. It’s just under 21lbs. Living in a city, I use it mostly on the road. Ivan is right…..this can move on the flats and climbs bridges easily. I’ll be heading up to the mountains next month to do some gravel.
@@burtjason208sounds like we have similar upgrades! I have been thinking of bar ends too for some different hand positions too
what's mtb do you use ?
For this video I was on my Hardtail, it’s a Norco Torrent with a 150mm fork. Super fun bike!
Is this a XL version?
This is a Large
Hey thanks for responding. I'm 6’4 so I'm kinda worried that a large would be too small, I think XL would be fit for me.
No problem, at 6’4 I would think a large would be too small. I’m 5’9 and between Medium and Large. 6’4 would put you on an XL according to their size chart.
Last year I gave my FX to a friend and bought a Checkpoint for single-track and gravel riding after I moved to northwest Arkansas. Made me realize how "bad" the FX was. It got my through four years of riding in SF, so I can't knock it too hard, but holy cow is there a difference between a budget bike and a mid-level as far as heft, drivetrain, and handling goes. I would think beyond the $3,000 mark you get rapidly diminishing returns. RIP my sweet FX.
I agree, I have a mtb background so normally I’m on one of my mountain bikes for singletrack. When the trails are wet I’ll run the FX on gravel and pathways just thought it would be fun to give it a go for this video. I pulled off the entry level drivetrain from my FX and upgraded it with a Deore 1x10. If I got into more gravel riding I would likely invest in a proper gravel bike. For now this one checks all the boxes. Enjoy the Checkpoint!! That’s a nice bike!
Hybrid rider too here with 35c tire 💪
Nice! They’re fun bikes! Thanks for watching.
I got one free and have it on my dumb trainer. was contemplating graveling it more.
Honestly it’s pretty decent on gravel, Trek says 38c is the max tire but I fit some 40’s and there is still good clearance. I also flipped my stem so I have a better aero and aggressive riding position. I think the biggest thing I would gain from a true gravel bike is the more hand positions drop bars offer.
You ride some of my favourite trail’s can’t wait to get out there but there not quite ready yet. ✋
I know what you mean! I’m pumped to get out there when things dry up!
I rode my Trek fx everywhere ! To town 12 mi just to ride the town trails etc 😊
That’s awesome! It’s a pretty versatile bike for sure. Now that I have gravel tires on it I feel like it can handle a lot more too. Thanks for the comment!
I'll try this!
It took away a fair bit but i caved and took it to my LBS. I ended up getting some Jagwire sound detonating around the shifter cable and they put heat shrink around the brake cable. Between that and all the tricks I did in this video it’s significantly better. I also thought about pulling the bottom bracket out and stuffing a sponge in the downtube.
