  • First off I’m no expert, I’m just a Dad that loves bikes and wants to get his kids into riding. These are the things that helped my kids interested in riding.
Kids bikes can be overwhelming, what is best for our kiddos and how to get them on two wheels. The main things that worked for me are these.
-skip the training wheels. Pick up a balance bike and have your little one figure out balancing before pedalling. Once they have their balance figured out it’s time to move to pedals.
-find a kids bike with hand brakes. Coaster brakes are tricky bc when kids are figuring out pedals as soon as they backpedal they come to a stop with coaster brakes. This gets them frustrated and not wanting to learn. I have also taken the pedals off of this bike for a ride or two so they can get a feel of the bike before the pedals go on.
-light bikes are the best. Imagine trying to ride a 100lbs/50kg pedal bike. It would be a lot of work when you already know how to ride. Now imagine trying to learn how to ride with a super heavy bike. It would not be very fun. Lighter the better.
-when it comes to their first bike with gears I think trigger shifters are a lot easier then grip shifts. With a grip shift kids have a hard time moving it to the right gear or click through multiple gears by accident. Trigger shifts are easy to operate (1 click = 1 shift) and a cheap conversion from a grip shift bike.
-suspension isn’t always necessary. Unless your kiddo is getting into some proper trails they are better off without the weight of suspension until they get to a bigger wheel bike. I would say 24” wheel and larger. Lots of kids don’t have the body mass to compress the suspension anyways unless you find an air fork.
-get them on the biggest wheel possible. Bigger wheels have better rollover and they won’t get hung up on things as often. They also carry momentum and are less twitchy. As your kiddo grows and needs new bikes, try to go for a bigger wheel as long as they fit!
-be sure they like the bike! This might include adding a few things like baskets, grips and pedals of their favourite colour or putting their favourite stickers on the frame. The goal is to get them to be excited to jump on the bike!
Hopefully the video and write up help, if you have any questions feel free to ask.
