in japan, calling plastic bottles “pet bottles” is very common. i’m japanese and my mom would often tell me to recycle or reuse my pet bottles (recycling is also very important!) there is even a manga called “leave it to pet!” that i used to read as a kid about a recycled pet bottle and his antics.

But when Nintendo puts copyrighted works of art in THEIR game they end up spawning a multimillion dollar franchise, and even get to rerelease the game *with the art still in the code* in multiple regions. while "PET bottle" isn't like, the everyday way of referring to a plastic water bottle, it's certainly common enough in certain contexts like differentiating different types of drink packaging (e. g. vs glass bottle or aluminium can). I do see it where "plastic bottle" is too informal or not specific enough.
