    I still think about the year 2031, when Animal Crossing will no long follow the time of the current hour as 2030 is its maxed-out date on the GameCube. In a sense, I guess that will become lost content.

      @@PaulFisher If your GameCube internal clock is ever set above the year 2030, then the year in Animal Crossing will be set to 2030 upon every boot up. New Horizons actually does have lost content! Pre-2.0 you had to upgrade your museum in order for it to have art. Before the art upgrade it was grey and after it was brown and had red banners. After 2.0, however, building the ACNH museum leads to you getting the art and the red banners right away, to account for the fact that the museum now has a different upgrade, The Roost. However, if you didn’t upgrade to have the art exhibit before 2.0 came out, you can still have the original bannerless museum on your island.

    11:37 reminds me of my vacation to Oslo and Stockholm last November. Both Norway and Sweden are home to 7-Eleven, which makes them the first and so far only countries I've been to which have 7-Eleven. The very first time I ever went to 7-Eleven was in Oslo... on November 7th, which can also be written out as 7/11. This was completely unintentional and I only realized when I saw posters at a different location later that day with text along the lines of "Happy 7-Eleven Day!"

    9:34 it’s still crazy to me that the only AC game that really got multiplayer play right was New Leaf. Sure, you can make your own fun by visiting other players’ towns in WW, CF, or NH. But NL was the only one where the game gave you actual multiplayer mini games to play, as well as the ability to track how many bugs and fish players catch using the timer item, allowing you to host your own bug/fishing catching contest in your town. I find it particularly egregious that NH doesn’t have anything like this-there’s very little to do when visiting another player’s town! Online multiplayer mini games a la Tortimer Island tours had so much potential and I really hope they return in the next game (whenever that may be).

    Another thing I found interesting after reading about the monkey distributions is that after receiving the data, you’d also get a message in a bottle from Katrina that’s specific to each Monkey. Also, they’d say they moved directly from Nintendo!

    • @Hunter-R.
      @Hunter-R.  5 месяцев назад +17

      Ah, for some reason I thought Katie and Kaitlin were only in Wild World where they still have presence in local communication. They are indeed lost from City Folk, which I admittedly haven't played a lot of... Good catch!

    • @SuperLuigiKart64
      @SuperLuigiKart64 5 месяцев назад +6

      Katie and Kaitlin are at least still present in Wild World, given that they will trigger from local multiplayer. But you are correct that they no longer function in City Folk!
      And while you know, I'm going to provide information for those who are unaware of what they are:
      Katie and Kaitlin are a pair of special characters, a mother and daughter cat whose presence is tied to multiplayer. After a multiplayer session, a random chance results in the two cats appearing in two separate towns from the players who were connected. Katie, the daughter, cries that she got separated from her mom, and Kaitlin similarly worries about her daughter. The two players need to open their gates again, the player with Kaitlin hosts while the player with Katie needs to physically guide her to the town gate. Once the connection is made, the two leave happily. The player who had Katie receives a present in the mail, but I believe the player with Kaitlin doesn't receive anything.
      This encounter is unchanged across both Wild World and City Folk, but Wild World can still trigger the encounter via local wireless play. Interestingly, while Katie alone is still in New Leaf, she is still multiplayer-reliant and thus much more difficult to encounter. She can randomly show up in your town after a multiplayer session, and asks to continue seeing the world by visiting other towns. You again have to guide her to the train station and leave for another town, and she'll then mail a present the next day.

    Great video, Ive never seen anyone mention the original copy letter in the gamecube game.
    Just wanted to add something on since I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to animal crossing haha, interestingly new horizons does have another piece of 'lost content' - when the museum updated with artwork in 1.2.0, the player was not automatically granted an updated museum, but instead had to complete a short 'quest' in which they would need to deliver an artwork item to blathers so that he would upgrade. Most people who played the game before this would take no notice of this, thinking this was just another upgrade, however if restarting/creating a new island, the player will skip this quest, meaning that the original museum upgrade is technically unobtainable while playing naturally. just thought this was an interesting piece of lost content, keep up the great videos man

    A lot of the New Leaf distributed items as well as items from regional holidays were only available in certain countries, so you had to trade with people from America, various European countries, Korea, and Japan to get everything. (There was also a shirt, the blue argyle tee, that was categorized as a distributed item but never even actually released.)
    City Folk had some regional items too, but not nearly as many. At least New Horizons lets everyone get stuff from around the world, and I think the specific New Year's items can still be acquired by changing your system time.

All it takes is changing the DNS of your wifi connection in the connection settings and signing on. That helps keep systems like Wild World going, even if it's a third party solution.

    what the hell was up with Nintendo being extremely aware of the limited/lost nature of old proprietary stuff during the WiiU's
    virtual console stuff? i thought the only thing they did was add in all the e-reader only levels in that one SMB3 game,
    but they went out of their for something like removing the online requirement for Wild World too?
    and yet when it came to Mario Party, they just didnt port the first game because i guess they didnt want to mess
    with trying to fix the controls and didnt want to allow people to ruin their hand or controller.
    and then Switch comes along and none of that thoughtfulness is present, especially any of the Mario Party 1 stuff.

    New horizons technically has some (almost) lost content.
    One of the later updates to the game (either the diving, farming, or Happy home designer updates) removed access to a few of the special island tour islands like the really cool rare flower island.
    It's now impossible to visit those old islands legitimately unless you buy a new switch, or factory reset your current switch and start a new game without updating.
    This is because the switch knows if you delete a game update, and will refuse to launch the game until you re-download the update. And the only way to make your switch forget without hacking it is to factory reset it and wipe everything.

    Considering most holiday events and the like aren't actually included in New Horizons' data, and have to be downloaded from Nintendo's servers, that makes the holiday events temporary content - once the NH servers are shut down, which they inevitably will be, holidays will likely be gone for good.
    Yet another reason why I refuse to play NH.

    Actually, there is something else in New Horizons! It isn’t technically locked to time but rather updates pre 2.0, however after the 2.0 update, it is impossible to have the brown museum on your island, as well as an entire sequence of finding Redd and building the art section. The art section is now pre-built when the museum gets built which I assume is because of Brewster being added. Not technically locked to time, but thought I’d point that out :)

    • @SuperLuigiKart64
      @SuperLuigiKart64 5 месяцев назад

      I believe the art section was pre-built due to a glitch that could occur during Redd's first visit. The sequence was supposed to play out in the following way: his boat was closed, he'd wander the island, offer a painting for 498,000 Bells before dropping it to 4,980. That painting would be genuine, and donating to Blathers would trigger the art museum upgrade.
      However, a player who sold or gave away the painting would confuse the game, and Redd would never show up again. If this occurred, the only workaround would be to have another player obtain genuine artwork from Redd and give it to the affected player, so that Blathers would take the donation. Additionally, if one simply lacked the funds or refused to purchase the original painting, Redd would be in the queue of weekly villagers and prevent museum progress until he arrived and sold a genuine artwork.

    • @aidansmachines
      @aidansmachines 5 месяцев назад

      @@SuperLuigiKart64 Hm interesting, I had never actually heard of that glitch before! I guess rather than not letting the painting be sold Nintendo simply decided to remove the entire first Redd visit process with the price dropping dialogue and such.

    • @KopperNeoman
      @KopperNeoman 5 месяцев назад

      @@aidansmachines It would have been a lot easier to just force Redd to respawn in that case, or modify the cutscene so that Blathers buys the painting instead.

    Thanks for the amazing and indepth content, Hunter.
    I will always be critical of New Horizons for one singular reason:
    Happy Home Designer has less features but more variety than New Horizons. Animations upon interacting with furniture is equally just as welcome as free placement of Furniture outdoors that I am very heartbroken will always be locked to just Happy Home Designer... the simple idea of "being able to interact with your furniture" and more engagement with your villagers and buildings around the town is such a simple yet phenomenal idea. For a new entry in the series building upon the previous game, it sure lacks a lot of the original base.
    The DLC doesn't even have some of the features the 3DS game does.
    And keep in mind: Happy Home Designer was a spin-off, that was lower in scope, but still somehow outperformed New Horizons, and it's DLC.

    The biggest thing I’ve learned from this video is that Wild World had a Virtual Console release on Wii U. I never really payed attention to the DS VC and assumed that Animal Crossing was treated like mainline Pokemon where they rarely got VC releases. I guess it is since Wild World is the only AC game that’s gotten a VC release.
    As much as I love New Horizons , I’d also love the GameCube game or City Folk to be rereleased on modern hardware.

    Another case of lost content in New Horizons seem to be the special characters amiibo dialouges
    When ACNH was released, a few special character had special dialouges when you scanned their amiibos at the terminal in the town center, but after they made amiibos of the special character's that were new to the series since ACNH, instead of adding in new dialouges for them, they just removed ALL dialouges.
    It's a bummer, really, since I thought it was super cute little feature when I first got the game and I was so sad to find out it got removed.

    Hey, speaking of the online items distributed with City Folk, have you ever considered talking about the modded items that could replace them? I recall hearing these items, once modded in, could be seen online by other players and even spread to them because it directly replaced items in that distribution table. I'm not sure if I have all my facts correct, but that's what I remember reading.
    I'm also not sure if you've covered it or would plan to cover it, but I'd also be interested in hearing you cover the phenomenon of seeding if you haven't. I know it effected Wild World's online multiplayer as entire cartridges could be permanently ruined, without outside help to fix it, if a hacker decided to over populate someone's town with specific buildings to the point of crashing the game at start up.

    new horizons lost content is mostly just stuff they patched out or removed, like the Earth day nook mile bonus rewards where you get lots of nook miles for planting trees and flowers, the hybrid flower islands, tarantula islands, and stuff.
    They also removed these animations that would play when you tried to scan an amiibo of a major npc not present in the game (at the time) where the npc shows up and says like "Hey, I cant visit right now!"
    ...And this isn't lost content really, but they also changed the length and intensity of Bunny Day, of course, after huge backlash. but I honestly prefered the way it was originally. It was cool to have a holiday feel like a weeks long event that you could participate in a little every day up until the big day.

Since then, I've purchased every game day one except Amiibo Festival and I sold my Wii U the moment I heard that it wasn't getting any other Animal Crossing games. The first game really helped me through some severe depression and loneliness when I was young, and the series has held an extremely special place in my heart since then.
    I wish I could reach out to the original dev team and thank them for potentially saving my life. I still listen to Animal Crossing GameCube's OST multiple times a week. It helps me focus, it makes it easier to enter the flow state, it calms me. Animal Crossing has enriched my life deeply. Thank you for ensuring RUclips viewers today that are interested will learn about the original. It deserves more credit than it gets!
