If I remember correctly the Pokémon community has been making strides in E-Reader code development for the Gen 3 games. They've been able to create completely new events within the limitations of the E-Reader's implementation in Gen 3. Maybe speaking with them might be helpful, although I don't really understand any of it so Gen 3 Pokémon's E-Reader crafting might not translate to Animal Crossing. The channel "im a blisy" is where I found the E-Reader stuff.
GameCube: I mean, if you're playing Animal Crossing on real hardware instead of Dolphin, you already _have_ either this or a Wii (which will also work). Glossy matte printer: Odds are preeeeetty good you have a printer already, just for general use. Ordinary printers have been able to work with glossy photo paper for more than two decades now, and any modern printer is more than capable of the required DPI. So, all you'd need to do is pick up a small pack of glossy photo paper. GameBoy Advance: If you're playing older Nintendo games on real hardware, odds are good you have one anyway - although it _is_ a pain point if you don't. Link cable: Might not have it, but not too bad if you don't. E-reader: _This_ is the one you probably don't have, unless you're obsessively completing Pokemon 3rd gen on real hardware. This one is the thing you'll have to shell out for. Expect to spend around $70-80 US (at time of writing) for a North American one. And in fairness, it's not like this is the only content it's good for. And emulating Zelda is only part of the point. There's also the pleasure of unlocking a fun little bit of bonus content in your game that for years had been left imprisoned by cruel fate.
i usually don't leave comments but i've watched all of your videos and not only are they amazing but they also have subtitles, which is not a common thing in my experience. as a person with auditory processing issues i want to thank you for making the effort of adding them even though your channel is still relatively small (afaik adding subtitles is either very time consuming or very expensive), so thank you and keep up the good work 👍
I wish Nintendo would their lesson, that releasing exclusive content through toys, online events (often region locked) is not good for their games legacy. If anything, it's only gotten worse over the years. So much content lost to time just so they can make a quick buck. Also getting litigious towards people who do stuff like make mods for their own games even over 10 years after. Good work for what you've done, and I hope Nintendo doesn't force you all to remove your progress from the internet.
Man I remember when someone online told me 20 years ago how he had disassembled Animal Crossing to find that the four games were specifically blacklisted, and I ended up using an Action Replay to get the games. This was pretty much the first time Nintendo made retro games available (and by the fact they were basically free you can tell Nintendo thought old games were worthless).
I had them, I don't really recall how I had them, but I would imagine it would have had to have been using an action replay since they were never officially released. Fun fact: It's actually a fully featured NES emulator written for the Gamecube and it's 100% possible to add different roms. In fact I wanna say there is even a romless NES item.
Sir, this channel of yours with so far 13 videos at a max of 2 months old is already so high quality. Very well done. And this one that started it off is for one massive accomplishment, you legend. Thank you for sharing your amazing dedication.
What an incredible accomplishment. I remember trying to print dotcodes as a child using the tool you mentioned here, so I could try and play some of the SMB3 e-Reader levels, but I didn't have a good enough printer. Now, thanks to amazing devs like you, the unfulfilled promise of the e-Reader is finally delivered. Thank you so much. All I want now are some fan-made reproduction cards, and I would be so very happy.
Randomly stumbled upon your channel a few days ago, watched a couple videos, and figured I'd check out the rest starting here. I just gotta say that I think this is such a cool thing you did. You went through all the trouble and effort of researching an old, rarely used piece of tech just to reverse engineer Nintendo's dot codes to unlock some ROMs in a 23 year old Gamecube game for no reason other than it would be neat to figure out. I won't pretend to understand more than a few of the technical details, but man I hope one day I find something to be as passionate about as you are with Animal Crossing. Thank you for doing this, it's really freaking cool.
This reminds me of how in the Japanese version it was also possible to get these games without mods. but you had to use a generator someone made to create a fake secret code, as Nintendo distributed Famicom items on their website with codes generated depending on the recipient's player/town name. Reverse engineering the e-Reader code and creating a physical dotcode you can use just takes this a step further, and it's better because it can be universalized. (Also the e-Reader is more fun.) This was a very interesting video, great work. Also shoutout to the 30 people who won a magazine sweepstakes in Japan and can truly claim they got SMB legitimately. I wonder if they know how special it is...
Another option is manufacturing a memory card file that delivers bonus letters to the player. Can have up to 10 letters with items attached, and they are removed from the file every time they are delivered. This would require the ability to modify a GC memory card which would be easy enough with a Wii. This was originally used to give free items on the memory card bundled with the game.
I just thought of how funny it would be if the e-Reader hadn’t’ve flopped and so Nintendo came out with the e-Writer so that you can mail things from your save file to a friend in an envelope as a very Nintendo-y half attempt to make up for the GameCube not having internet capabilities (aside from that super clunky and expensive modem that they only used for Phantasy Star) It’d be the Gameboy Printer of the GameCube. Barely any games would use it, and the ones that would’d only use it to make up for the absence of other features. It’d be “easier” than codes, but also really slow and expensive, which we all know is the Nintendo way.
Amazing!! I have always hoped that there would come a day when these two would somehow finally be made available and here it is! Very good and interesting video as well. Totally the type of content I enjoy, well done!
I've had to resort to ereader home brew before to complete the collection of sma4 switches and levels, and it's nice to see ereader home brew finally come to animal crossing.
Absolute legend. I didn't even know you did this. I'm glad I randomly got recommended the video cause I was still thinking they were completely unobtainable for so long!
I remember hearing about the legend of Zelda and super Mario bros from a really old game trailers series called pop fiction a loooong time ago, it's amazing to see the work you've done to make these long lost relics finally avaliable on vanilla devices!
Had to binge all the videos so far. I don’t know much at all about OG animal crossing. I only ever rented it a few times as a kid. All this stuff is insane 😂
What an absolute gigachad. I recently went down this rabbit hole while researching the Eon Ticket and @imablisy 's event recreations via the e-reader. And i have to say to everyone involved, you're all absolute mad lads lol. Thank you all so much for your time, research, and efforts on cracking the e-reader wide open and making these types of cards reproduceable. I recently discovered your channel and been having a blast going through your content having trips down memory lane whilst gaining a greater understanding of the inner workings of what is in my opinion, one of the most extensively coded games in history. Here's hoping that Cuyler's translation makes it to completion one day. Instantly subscribed and waiting for anything you put out my dude!
I really hope this video blows up and gets the recognition it deserves some day, it is crazy how much work went into this and your explanation, though quite technical, was still pretty clear.
I always thought that SMB and Zelda were supposed to be contest prizes that never panned out considering SMB is basically *the* NES game and Zelda is a sort of sister series to Mario.
That's awesome! I never imaginated that the forbidden four will be obtained without glitches. And thank you for the explanation about how to print the code
THANK YOU! This is so neat! Im definitely considering starting up my OG town House 🏡 🐾 (I was 11 with ADHD and thought Rover was asking where I wanted to live, so I said House like I wanted to live in a house 😭😭)
It turns out my parents had an e-reader. I think it’s pretty cool how it worked, at least the setup we had. We had the reader, GameCube, and the Gameboy Player/disc for the GameCube. Then, we had card packs for NES games. It needed 10 card swipes of data, which was cumbersome, but when it worked, it was fun and really neat to play NES on GameCube.
Okay but I was expecting some type of glitch or something, not some E-reader chicanery. And when I heard it was e-reader tomfoolery I was hooked immediately lmao, such a weird piece of hardware
Interesting video! All of your hard work is incredible! I can’t believe the forbidden four is actually obtainable now! Quick question, can this method be extended to obtain other items? I’m curious if it would be theoretically possible to print dot codes for every item in Animal Crossing. The effects this could have in Speedrunning certain categories could be huge. Again, incredible work! You’re amazing!!
Yep! You can actually get almost every item through custom e-Reader dot codes. This includes those that you can't normally get through Nook Codes since there aren't any restrictions with the e-Reader.
Is this what got you into documenting. I'm enjoying watching your content and learning about the game, even though I only played it for an hour or so as a rental. Watched most of your videos so far.
I think it would be cool if there was a website that would give you any mailable item with the dot codes using the same method you used to get the games
That won't be too optimal since you could just generate the code to use it in-game, those items were specifically blacklisted from the code generation trick. So why bother with all the printing/scanning stuff for non blacklisted items? I guess just for the shake of it could be interesting but idk I thought you maybe missed that point
This is truly fascinating and I have to applaud and commend you for your hard work into this form of video game preservation and contribution! I honestly wish the same process could be done for the Eon Ticket for Pokèmon Ruby & Sapphire as I do have an e-Reader myself but trying to get that event card is severely expensive! And GameSharks for the GBA SP aren’t anything to sneeze at either! You are truly a master at your craft and I’m happy to be a new subscriber and I can’t wait to see all your future videos!
You should be able to find the file for the eon ticket online somewhere (as long as you don't have a EU copy of the game since they never implemented e-reader cards for it), since i remember hearing about people printing it. Just be ready to mess around with printer settings a lot, since most people seem to have issues with it printing incorrectly
I've seen more e-reader custom cards be made recently, like those gen 3 pokemon events. I wish there was a singular place where one could find all these new cool cards across all games.
Animal crossing is how I played and beat SMB and Zelda 1 as a kid. I had action replay and obtained them that way along with ice climbers and all the other ones games
I remember seeing a video several years ago talking about these hidden NES games inside AC, and how to unlock them. There was a legit method, in game, to receive these games through the mail services, no peripherals (such as a GBA) needed! I don't remember the exact method, as I didn't (and still don't) own the game, so I hadn't bothered to memorize it, but I do remember it was luck based, so one can waste days attempting this again and again before finally getting the desired outcome. I doubt I can find that video again, if it even still exists, but if I do, I'll edit this comment with a link.
You might be thinking of the Japanese version of the game DnM+, where you can mail villagers a special code and get these items that way. But this is otherwise not possible in North American Animal Crossing.
I must have had a friend with an action replay as a kid or something because I swear I had Mario Bros on my save and I never had an e-reader. Maybe I'm remembering playing something else that had the game instead.
This is so different but my discovery that ACNH can be converted to XML format with only a renamed extension makes this video so much more satisfying because it felt like a mystery or a riddle, whereas "this is just an XML?!" was a HUGE letdown
Hey man amazing video! Quick question, why cant you just dupe the dot code from the original cards? Unless I’m misunderstanding something it sounds like copies of the original card cannot be printed out and scanned successfully. Is that because of the material/size or rather the space in the physical print being too small for normal printers to replicate? Thanks!
There are no original cards for these two games since Nintendo never publicly released them in any form, so you have to figure out how to make them yourself like I did in this video. You can indeed get the dot code data of other officially released cards and print them off yourself for them to work perfectly fine, but again there are no official cards available to "dupe" for Super Mario Bros. or Legend of Zelda.
came for gc ac content but i just so HAPPEN to be interested in printing ereader cards for pokemon and was unable to figure it out. since i have an extremely similar canon printer maybe i can finally get this to work
Thanks so much for doing this! Before I go ahead and purchase an E-Reader, though, can you confirm whether or not this works on an EU console/E-Reader?
Unfortunately the e-Reader was never released in Europe at all and thus, Animal Crossing’s PAL (EU) version doesn’t even have e-Reader functionality. If you want to do this on a PAL (EU) console, you’ll have to find the Australian version specifically which is compatible with North American (NTSC) e-Readers.
@@WhatIThoughtChannel Unfortunately they do not. Japanese e-Readers, along with Japanese copies of Animal Crossing, have an entirely different system so they are not cross-compatible.
@@Hunter-R. As I suspected. I’m aware of the e-reader region locking, as I live in Japan and own Doubutsu no Mori e+ & a Japanese e-reader myself, but I was curious if anything like this had also been achieved for JP versions. Thank you for your reply, I appreciate the response.
@@WhatIThoughtChannel I believe the models and data relating to Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda were removed in e+ anyways. So trying to access them would just give you a blank "dummy" item that you cannot drop. I think the only Japanese version that still has these games in-tact is Doubutsu no Mori+, the original GameCube enhancement of the N64 game. In that game, you can actually use generated secret codes to obtain these items.
Hey @Hunter-R. do you think you would ever be able to create a download for the whole Nes game cards for these 2 missing ones? Just so I could add them to my e-reader card collection as physical cards rather than just having the printable dot codes? I think they'd be incredibly cool. I'd do it myself, but i'm not particularly savvy on how.
Dude! This is HUGE! Action replay is a far worse way to obtain the forbidden four. They cost like more than 100 bucks and it's not even guaranteed to have all of the codes. I borrowed my friend's AR and I got all of them except for Mario Bros. Super interesting video all around. Where can we get the e reader codes for Mario Bros? (Not the super one)
Would something like this be possible for amiibo? New Leaf had two villagers that were only available as part of a spotpass distribution, but can no longer be accessed. Would it be possible to make amiibo for them to be able to access their rv in the campground?
Yes, this is already possible with custom NFC tags. Search up amiibo spoofing and you can find what you’re looking for! I’ve even made a few amiibo stickers myself for this purpose.
I swear to god I got Zelda and SMB from a gamestop promotional or something of the like - I distinctly remember my memory card that came with the game allowing me to have the two NES games (via mail perhaps?), as they were some of the first items I had in my house, and it inspired me to try and collect every NES game within Animal Crossing (which I eventually did!) I never owned an action replay and to this day wonder how exactly it is I got Zelda and Super Mario Bros if this is some sort of false memory, since I definitely created a new town and character the day I got the game and it was not a town with cheated items preloaded onto it. Am I crazy here?
You're correct in that the original Animal Crossing came packaged with a special memory card with present data on it. This present included "K.K. Love Song," a letter from Nintendo, and two NES games. However, these two NES games came from a grab bag which was specifically programmed to only pull from the "common" NES game list, of which Super Mario Bros. and Zelda were not included. So, you definitely got two NES games, but they were not Zelda or Super Mario Bros.
This is an issue with Dolphin emulator itself. You need to turn Dolphin’s graphic settings to “accurate” instead of “safe.” Match your settings with this picture: imgur.com/IGaSesb Make sure you change your settings while you’re currently playing your game, since it resets to default when you launch.

@@th3bear01 Thank you so much for the tip! I really appreciate it! My Sapphire is indeed a US copy so that’s good!
Thank you for this amazing work on this amazing game
I've seen more e-reader custom cards be made recently, like those gen 3 pokemon events. I wish there was a singular place where one could find all these new cool cards across all games.
THIS IS INCREDIBLE! THANK YOU!
Animal crossing is how I played and beat SMB and Zelda 1 as a kid. I had action replay and obtained them that way along with ice climbers and all the other ones games
This is really cool, amazing work! (yourself and everyone else involved)
This is incredibly cool!
I must have had a friend with an action replay as a kid or something because I swear I had Mario Bros on my save and I never had an e-reader. Maybe I'm remembering playing something else that had the game instead.
Bro died to the first goomba, this is why we were never given this game
Great video! 😄🌟
This is so different but my discovery that ACNH can be converted to XML format with only a renamed extension makes this video so much more satisfying because it felt like a mystery or a riddle, whereas "this is just an XML?!" was a HUGE letdown
I remember finding those codes to get all the nes games, including the unobtainable ones. Too bad I don't remember where I found them.
This video reminds me of the quote attributed to Sir Isaac Newton “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
Very interesting! I'm going to have to find my old dusty e reader.
Amazing work my dude!
THIS IS INSANE!! Yahooo god bless you man! sure i will try it out!!!
I just used a GameShark back in the day. 😂 But I did have an e-reader and all that stuff, too.
You should try this with the nes that can read games off of the memory card
Ice Climber was deemed just as special as SMB and Zelda, but Nintendo refuses to give it a sequel
The hero we needed
This isn't even about Animal Crossing anymore...
great video, btw :D
Thank you so much! And yea... this is more of a technical video explaining this accomplishment. I may have gotten a bit carried away haha
Can you obtain Nook Paper in ACWW?
Do you have the e-reader codes for ice climber as well because that’s my favorite game 14:58 😮😮😮
Funny how these use the same file extension as Valve Pack Files (i.e. Half-Life, Portal, TF2 game data)
came for gc ac content but i just so HAPPEN to be interested in printing ereader cards for pokemon and was unable to figure it out. since i have an extremely similar canon printer maybe i can finally get this to work
I fucking love this! It's SO impressive! And SO easy to understand!
What a legend!
THIS IS HUGE!!!!!!!
@@Hunter-R.Are you able to confirm whether these new SMB & TLoZ cards work on Japanese e-readers/copies of the game?
In that game, you can actually use generated secret codes to obtain these items.
i ended up getting those via action replay eons ago, but i didn't realize there weren't any legit ways to get them
Hey @Hunter-R. do you think you would ever be able to create a download for the whole Nes game cards for these 2 missing ones? Just so I could add them to my e-reader card collection as physical cards rather than just having the printable dot codes? I think they'd be incredibly cool. I'd do it myself, but i'm not particularly savvy on how.
Oh no ! Nintendo ninjas want to know your location
Search for Animal Crossing e-Reader cards in .RAW format and you'll find it pretty easily. I can't link it directly here for copyright reasons.
@@Hunter-R. 👍🏻
i think i still have an e-reader or two lying around, but my printer is not hooked up. sick though
I swear to god I got Zelda and SMB from a gamestop promotional or something of the like - I distinctly remember my memory card that came with the game allowing me to have the two NES games (via mail perhaps?), as they were some of the first items I had in my house, and it inspired me to try and collect every NES game within Animal Crossing (which I eventually did!)
I never owned an action replay and to this day wonder how exactly it is I got Zelda and Super Mario Bros if this is some sort of false memory, since I definitely created a new town and character the day I got the game and it was not a town with cheated items preloaded onto it.
Dang, I wonder how I got those two games then. Childhood memory is always so fickle.
Thank you for the reply though! Your work is amazing as always.
I actually can’t believe that…
It is a real shame Animal Crossing e+ don't got a legitimate method yet. Maybe someday.
hunter, i've been playing animal crossing on dolphin emulator and when i play the zelda nes the tiles are mixed up with other tiles
This is an issue with Dolphin emulator itself. You need to turn Dolphin’s graphic settings to “accurate” instead of “safe.” Match your settings with this picture: imgur.com/IGaSesb
Make sure you change your settings while you’re currently playing your game, since it resets to default when you launch.
