ARR wasn't this bad. I agree. My expectations for DT was to be slow, setting up new characters, worlds, etc. I liked the bones of the story (the first half) as it was trying to to that. The EXECUTION of Dawntrail is what was awful for me. No story has any hope when the story telling is this bad. I need basic levels of consistency in plot elements and a certain maturity level which DT threw out the window, opting for young readers level of dialogue and often contradicting itself to attempt to manufacture cheap and immediate payoffs that didn't make sense and weren't earned.

I don't think you played 1.0 if you think it had a worse story... the STORY was NEVER a part of the backlash against 1.0. 1.0 was a laggy glitchy mess at launch with outdated menu-based gameplay. The story of 1.0 was NEARLY identical to 2.0 with the exception of Dalamud which made 1.0 story BETTER than 2.0.

The massive worm face is right where one of the top glovewort bell bearings is, but I agree with what you said the rarified aspect of the dlc

In the span of just 12 raid fights, Gaia from Shadowbringers had 10x more character development than Wuk Lamat had throughout the entire Dawntrail expansion.

i find hilarious how you guys had to spend some time explaining what the Promises are and why they are interested in succeeding their father as the Dawnservant just because the game localization is as bad as usual, using made up terms to try to make the script feel more fancy, but it actually makes the dialogues more convoluted and harder to understand for no good reason. In Japanese they Wuk Lamat is referred as Princess and her brothers as Princes, which make automatically obvious why their are interested in succeeding their father. The Dawnservant is yet another ass-pull term from the localization. In Japanese Bakool Ja Ja title is 連王 (Ren'oh), that to my understanding would mean something like "King of the Tribes", I might be wrong because the Japanese script always use very obscure kanjis, but even when this is a weird name from the original Japanese, the actual localized term again makes no sense at all.

Bakool Ja Ja doesnt beat any of us up, he only stronghands Wuk Lamat at the Hanu place and retreats, and later kidnaps her - because the writers made us and all other characters complete idiots. Then in the cave, we need to trick him and then he manages to fly and we dont persue him - for whatever reasons. 28:21 --- He always had that staff: he has a sword for the fighter head and a staff or wand for the magic head. Pay attention. 28:50 --- I have to ask, how far in the story is George? Because we had that same thing happen when we first meet Zenos and Ranjit: slayer of gods, killer of dragons, gets swatted like a fly by some random guy. And for the record: ShB was written by Ishikawa. Not watching any further. I dont see the point in discussing DT with someone who just finished HW, or at least didnt finish DT themselves. And there are too many points incorrectly summarised. For me the story was okay'ish, but the writing was horrible and turned a decent story into garbage. The characters were one-dimensional, with very few exceptions, and the pacing was off. That being said, the game shines in every other category: the music is one banger after the other, the zones are stunning, gameplay is super fun and boss design = chef's kiss.

The story was low quality, Wuk Lamat is goddam terrible and insufferable, the VA has no talent and has the most spoken lines. There was no peace from our stalker who simply needed to fuck off and we dont get to call our scion friends Raha or Shtola but we are expected to with that idiot Wuk and call her llama tea. Meteion was defeated and the song of despair still went on as Wuk was manifested.

I'll make this short and sweet. it is the worst story out of all the expansions.

I’m scratching my head after watching the video and reading the comments. Did I get a different DT than everyone else? I’m not saying it’s perfect, but I have a completely different take. This review and most of the comments are a couple weeks old. It took me over 3 weeks to work through the story, because I play only an hour or two a day. I also watch all cutscenes (good ones and bad ones), and talk to all NPCs I can find in each zone. Not saying there’s a right way, but maybe a different way will elicit a different response? I wonder if the story will grow on people after some more time with it. I dunno. I really enjoyed it, saw lots of character growth and so much earnestness in Wuk. And the rite of succession being a recreation of the dawn servant’s own journey has so many parallels on multiple planes throughout both halves of the MSQ. Still scratching my head.

I've chosen to listen to this story recap and skip all cutscenes. Oh how the mighty storytellers at SE have fallen.

Dawntrail and I can sum it up in other posts. Its a story where the writers were far over their depth and a failure of execution, production and talent acquisition.

i actually like the dps thing on healers, but only on Sage because his kit is designed to heal by dealing dmg while also having shields, HoTs and ogcd there is actually not a better healer than Sage, Whitemage feels misserable to play so no wonder whitemage healer are complaining because pretty much all they can do is casting glare instead of 8 different damage spells that sage got, he really should ditch Whitemage and play Sage, i recommend that to everybody i would have quit the game if there wasn't the Sage we got in Endwalker, well no i i quit the game because of Dawnfails story is despicably bad but thats another reason... EDIT: and now i feel like this video is really outdated because people are complaining that content is to hard and bosses and trashpulls actually do quite some damage, if you are in a group with a bad darkknight you can have you struggeling whitemage healer dream fullfiled

Music wasn't that great either. It's timid compared to previous expansions. That is when they didn't put a lot of ARR and sometimes Endwalker music. And we've got no prominent villain. Just a few antagonists which switched one to another. Not even a foreshadowing for one. Which made plot a real slop to get through. No exiting characters whatsoever. I personally really dislike Zenos. But DT made me want him to come back so friggin' much Overall, it seems like Yoshi, Soken and Ishikawa, all three had their hands off the development. Otherwise I can't believe DT was made by them

Wuk Lamat is a shit character

The wol never fought Bakool Jaja. He ran away before we could. People could sense how dangerous we were. Bakool Jaja's shift was because he was abandoned and exiled for failing to beat Wuk Lamat. His father was the one that urged him to be a bully. He was living up to certain expectations placed on him that he never wanted for himself. Wuk Lamat vowed to find another way for his people that didn't rely on blessed siblings, thus ending the cycle of sacrifice. His helping Wuk and having respect for her makes sense. Of much of my criticisms of the story, that followed logically.

completely agree with a lot of your criticism here, but one thing: if the game can survive endwalker, where it was 2.5 years of absolutely barebones content with nothing going on for non-raiders, the game can survive a negative story reception. DT's story isnt that good (saved by 2nd half for me), but encounter design are leagues better than EW, from dungeons to the ex trials to the normal raids so far. Not to mention it's shaping up to be the most content-dense expansion since stormblood. Still hoping they can also pull a stormblood with the story as well of course (extremely polarizing launch msq, universally beloved patch msq)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Graham. I don't think I could have put it better. I was a bit less optimistic going in than you seemed to be. Started skipping story from level 92 msq onwards it was unbareable. I was starting to think I was going insane seeing little to no reviews clearly calling all of this out. Even most reviewers are just saying the expansion is good with one "but" and it be something fking ridiculous so they dont hurt their viewership and trigger the playerbase. I think its time we move on from this game. The west has its hold over it now and there's nothing ishikawa and yoshi p can do about it. Lets just be happy to have shadowbringers and endwalker.

The final battle, man that was awesome. After dealing with everything, skipping some cutscenes for the first time ever in a msq, and the horribly paced final area... They did it. What a cool fight. And then Wuk Lamat shows up and I actually just face palmed and sunk in my chair and almost couldnt keep going.

Shoutout to my Stormblood enjoyers (best expansion imo). DT has been heavily damaged by Yuck Lamat, her voice, mindset, philosophy and presence was just horrendous. I wanted to get away from her every chance I could but NO the damn shitty writers had to tag me with this idiot. I wish I had a choice on who to help as Dawnservant cause Koana is my dude! Erenville was the star of the show and he got done dirty to drive a forced emotional plot at the end that fell flat. I pray I never had to be stuck with Yuck Lamat ever again! SB> SHB> HW> EW> ARR> DT is how I rank 14 now.

I never really cried a lot in previous FFXIV expansion. I cried a lot in Dawntrail and not because of story elements. Things that some of the Scions did were literally breaking of their character development. At some point I just felt like "so this is what they are going to do? Just make characters do whatever fills their need at the moment?" I guess I'm more attached to the lore than any specific character and much of this expansion was depressing to me, but not because the writers intended me to be. I think I should just take a break from this game. I quit WoW once when they changed the way a mount looked so I will totally do it over writing. I never felt the need to quit WoW over writing since it's always been garbage.

One thing, bad 2 headed lizard never beat warrior of light, because we do nothing for entire expansion.
