Wow, the statement from 2:00 to 2:40 was put so perfectly and exactly how I feel about that. Well, said!
Edit: Just listened to the whole episode, couldn't agree more with everything you guys said. I really couldn't believe what I was hearing in the other podcast... You two really just nailed it perfect.

I just hate that people have gotten mad at me for enjoying the last boss. Someone actually said that sticking close to him isn’t engaging and is cheese. I struggled for like 4 hours but that’s kind of what I wanted

Great discussion guys, I really vibed with almost every point you made. I think you hit the nail on the head with the point about meaningful engagement and that got me thinking: can you have meaningful engagement with a boss as a caster build?
Obviously the example you gave with Comet Azur wouldn't fall under the spectrum of meaningful engagement, but just by virtue of having a ranged option and being able to deal damage to a boss while minimising the opportunities it has to attack you feels like it kind of falls out of that band of meaningful engagement.
This is something I personally feel like FromSoftware needs to work on going forward. I want to meaningfully engage with the bosses of the games as a spellcaster, be it intelligence or faith, without feeling like I'm essentially taking pot shots while the boss can't really do anything to me.
They put so much work into the spells for this game but whenever I'm on either of my caster builds it feels like I'm playing the game wrong. I suppose you could say that it comes down to the strengths and weaknesses of each build but if FromSoft could work out a way for casters and melee focused players to share that band of meaningful engagement I think it would do an immense amount of good for bringing some more solidarity between playstyles into the community.

1000% agree, this is a fantastic comment

This is such a great comment. Got me thinking about potential changes for spells that FromSoft could take.
Imagine a major overhaul to the casting system i.e equipping a staff/seal will allow you to toggle between standard controls and spellcasting controls where what staff/seal and spell you have equipped modifies your dodge/jump, r1/r2, l1/l2.
Balancing that combat engagement with bosses is going to be a huge effort for From though. That’s without putting summons in the mix

I 100% agree about engaging the boss and overcoming the boss is more rewarding. One thing that may (or not, idk) help your argument is describing an average build that will fairly engage with the boss mechanics. How do you choose to tackle bosses? What’s your build? You did a great job trying not to upset anyone and stay neutral and you described many ways that make bosses easier than the “probably intended normal experience”. I feel that you didn’t touch on what a normal experience is. Are bleed and frost builds normal? Exploiting boss weaknesses? Greatshields? I mean, I used mimic on most bosses cuz I have a 3 year old and nap time isn’t always enough time to learn move sets…so I’m not judging. Just curious to understand more on what you both consider normal builds. There is just so much build variety and so many play styles that’s it’s hard to say what makes bosses easy or not outside of the obvious.
Also I think we can all agree that rune bears are the exception and deserved to be nuked.

Rune bears are just like Radahn, you just stay as close as possible at all times and they’re really not that bad, half their attacks will whiff

#1, no matter what sphere you're in, there are always going to be extremists who judge you if you aren't as extreme as they are. ignore them. there's something going on in their heads that no one but a psychiatrist can fix, if at all.
#2, i think ppl have gotten married to the notion of having a build instead of looking at the things you collect in the game as tools that you can use to solve the problems that have been presented. when i got into the dlc, the first thing i noticed is that many enemies have unblockable physical attacks. if you have a guard counter build, you're going to have a bad time until you employ some different strategies, like strafing, parrying, rolling, or jumping. everyone has suddenly discovered that jumping is preferable to rolling under many circumstances, which has always been the case, but is emphasized more in the dlc. in a commentary video, where one creator was reacting to another creator who was enumerating the instances where jumping is better than rolling, the reactor said, "well, that's great, but then you have to make a choice between rolling or jumping, and it makes it hard when you're used to just rolling when you see an attack come out," which leads me to . . .
#3: the devs know how players behave and are deliberately messing with you. when i went into the fissure and encountered the boss there (putrescent knight?), my first attempt was pathetic. i kept trying to block his overhead cleaver move, and i kept rolling backward away from the attack where the horse charges at you. after i died, i had a good laugh, because they clearly had me all figured out, and i'm sure i'm not the only one. it took a couple more attempts before i got the hang of it, and then the boss was a snap.
yes, ppl can and do beat these games with lizard-like reflexes, but for those of us who aren't giga chads, you can also beat the game with your intellect. i think what makes some ppl upset is that they didn't think of it first, and suffered more because of it.

A win is a win. Buuuut I think it's worth to point out that the META builds are less impressive. It'll get better over time as people play more and use different stuff.
But I make fun of mega users in every game I play. I just see it as an easy way out.

I think people use the "if you didn't beat the boss 'x' way then you didn't beat it legit" argument as a way to project themselves online. It doesn't really matter how others beat the boss. What should matter is how YOU want to beat the boss. I'll use roleplay or themed builds and beat the boss without any summons. That's how I prefer to play because it's more challenging and fun. Other people might run in, summon spirit ashes to distract the boss, then comet azure the boss to death with no threat of being targeted. I can't understand people who play like that because if I personally did that, I wouldn't feel a sense of accomplishment. Same from the opposite POV, that other person might think "Why make the fight harder on yourself on purpose? Why don't you just beat it by any means necessary?" But that doesn't mean I'm gonna initiate an argument with a person who plays like that. Just because I can't understand it doesn't make it a right or wrong way to play the game. At the end of the day it's a video game, you can play it however you like.

Absolutely, you should play the game in the way that you think you'll best enjoy it. We definitely have a recommended way to play the game which we feel is most likely to cause the most fun when playing a FS game, but at the end of the day, we don't really care what you do.
This conversation is more about the difference in meaningful engagement and how we need to view that experience.

I get what you’re saying , in fact I believe coop and even summons ash should be Ng+ only.
It shouldn’t be up to the player to decide what gear or method is to hard, too easy or what’s considered standard. This blame goes to FS
No one is going to handicap themselves to inflate the challenge on an already challenging game. They’re going to use whatever the game throws at them to optimize it, because they feel like that’s what they’re supposed to do. And it is.
This is why Sekiro is king.

I'm in the mindset that you basically have to cheat or use cheese methods because the DLC is so full of jank or overtuned enemies that the DLC just isn't fun. I'd rather play the DLC's from the souls games and Bloodborne over this dumpster fire of a DLC and nothing anyone says can change my opinion
