Hello and welcome to PenguinByte! I am Marcel, a 14 year old Linux and tech enthusiast. On this channel, I post all sorts of Linux and FOSS related content, including tips for newbies, distro reviews, comparisons, 30 day challenges, and much more. I upload videos every Saturday. Ubuntu 24 10 & GNOME 47 Released: What's New?
I am finally back with a new video, this time going over the new features and improvements in GNOME 47 and Ubuntu 24.10! Unfortunately due to the sheer amount of effects and transitions, I am a bit late to this topic, so I will try being more efficient with my time and editing next time. Hope you guys enjoy! I also listened to feedback from the community and lowered the whoosh sound effect from 10db to 5db, as well as not using as many whooshes since they were apparently too distracting. If the whoosh is still too loud, I can lower it to 3db next video. Let me know!

change the indian tutorial song add something more jazzy and lower the sound, quality is great but better music choice elevate it lot more. and please don't play the same song.
Dude. Yours are the videos that potential Linux users need to see. I've been back and forth on switching to Linux after seeing how complicated other tutorials make it look. Going through your channel, you make it look so accessible and even exciting to try. You are doing phenomenal work
thanks! I appreciate it :D
@PenguinByte I've always heard that Ubuntu is the "Windows-user"'s best option, but Fedora looks really really good. Would you recommend for newbies?
if you are using a old PC, never use snap, that's the real exp from me, so fxcking slow in initialization
This the first time I see your channel and I just want to say that u are the best youtuber i have seen this year I hope You are doing well and keep going ❤
Thanks, much appreciated :D
You forgot to make a video of the all immutable Distro.
@@zweiwing4435 I’m not sure if I still want to do that, if I do it will be in the far future though.
@@PenguinByte You promise to make that video in previous comments.
@ I don’t remember promising to do so, but if I did, I may still do it but honestly I’m not entirely sure how and what it would cover about the distros, or how to make the video.
Ah yes ubuntu, My favorite linux distro
9:30 its most likely wlan0
Yes.
Looking back I got a good bit of criticism for this video, and while I stand by what I said in it, I definitely could have focused more on why the Crowdstrike incident was such a bad thing and what about it should make you considering leaving Windows. I was too excited and also a bit rushed when making the video, and didn't really think it through fully and properly, nor organize it very well (for example the little clip I recorded about the kernel should've been said in the Crowdstrike Outage section). Most of the reasoning for why the Crowdstrike incident was bad was me arguing with Windows fanboys in the comments, and it would definitely be better for more of those questions to be addressed in the video lol
Tweaks is supposed to be installed via abroot. This is also in their documentation.
i like the concept of Debian due to the sheer stability it has
Yeah same, it's a great distro
I haven’t had these issues on alpine, love hearing other folks’ experiences though. Fwiw on bash, man and sudo, you can install all of them. Can even switch to glibc from musl easily. Because of Alpine targeting embedded systems, it’s missing a lot of software that comes preloaded on a lot of other distributions. Personally, I like that, but it definitely makes it more complicated to set up if you’re not sure what you need.
Yea a lot of the issues were just user error, I didn’t for example know that man needed other dependencies or that the ash shell’s equivalent to whereis is “type” (I think that’s what it was, I don’t remember, someone commented about that), although a few like NetworkManager’s instability and Xorg not working seemed to be Alpine’s fault. I’m sure with enough effort, I could have a (not perfect, but) better experience with it, but yeah it’s definitely meant more for embedded devices lol
Would you recommend Alpine for daily driving? I'd very much enjoy an incredibly lightweight Distro
Unfortunately no, Alpine was not a good experience for me on the desktop, if you want something lightweight though, I would recommend Arch, Linux Lite, or if you want something extremely lightweight, Tiny Core Linux (CorePlus for a complete experience or Core Pure 64 if you want the 64 bit version) 🙂
@PenguinByte anything a bit more... simple to install? Ik ik, "just read the guide", but i really only want to daily drive a Lightweight Distro and do my homework on a really old laptop, that's all really, love finding this channel btw, it's really informative
@@Sell_Sec Hmm, in that case Alpine would definitely be a bad option lol, what are your specs so that I can help find a good option? you could try Linux Lite in that case as well :) Also thanks!
@@PenguinByte Uhh, a Celeron N4020 8gb ram Fuckin... 60gb storage Yea, it's kind of ass, and Windows is just... way too bloated, it hinders my workload quite a bit But yea I'll try Linux Lite, thx for the tech help!! :D
@@Sell_Sec Oh damn lol a Celery... also thats not a lot of storage but its more than enough for most distros to work with! I hope Linux Lite works well :)
Here is something to know about apx. You can install it on any distro and yes i tried on fedora and installer worked but apx is nightmare to configure, documentation for apx is also horrible and incomplete. If you wanna use apx than use vanilla os, if you want similar experience like apx on other distros then play around with distrobox because it's much easier to setup on other distros
You can add sudo to alpine.
Yea I know lol
your professionality is bigger than your age
lmao thank you!
Amazing video! I still think the woosh sound effects are a bit too high volume, but this might be the best GNOME 47 review I've seen!
Thank you! Also thanks for the feedback, I will make them 3db next time lol
how do you select a tiny part of a clip. I can only seem to select a whole clip
@@coachgeo not sure what you mean, please elaborate. Define “tiny part”
@@PenguinByte I have clips that are 2 min long to 20 minis long.. how do I select only a part of a clip out of the whole clip. to say paste into another layer.. or to re-arrange portions of clips inside themself etc.
@@coachgeo I've never done that before but you could duplicate the clip and cut/trim it down to the size you want and then move that where you'd like :) Maybe Pitivi has another way of doing it that I'm not aware of
I really like the way gnome looks
I also love GNOME's ui, it's my personal favorite
Great video! Congratulations
@@raf.nogueira thank you!
How about Fedora 41? In my opinion much better than Ubuntu
Fedora 41 is great but the video was already really delayed so I didn’t want to delay it further, and there wouldn’t have been enough changes to cover, same with Plasma 6.2
I don’t know you’re a boy or a girl, but you have a cute voice. No homo. Edit: Also , no pedo, lol..
Wow, what a good video, really enjoyed this. You can't find this high quality, but you are consistently pushing videos like this out, keep it up 😃
@@dominicegginton Really glad you enjoyed it :D
How about F41?
@@gnomestech the video was so delayed that I didn’t want to add anything else that would delay it any longer, also there isn’t really too many changes with F41, same with Plasma 6.2, there just isn’t enough to cover on those 2.
Thank you for your content. Please, make one more video comparing Snap and Flatpak. This time a more technical indepth details about their technical differences. Thank you.
@@Autodidact_Polymath Great news! I actually made a video comparing Snaps and Flatpaks with several tests and also comparing some of their technical differences here: Snap VS Flatpak: ruclips.net/video/MiFiF9dLTIc/видео.html In the case that you already watched that video and are suggesting that I make a second part, what other categories would you like me to cover about the 2 formats regarding technical differences, or what did I forget to cover in that video?
@PenguinByte Their overall technical capabilities. Not only their desktop application. For example Snaps can be used not only for desktop applications but also for server and IoT. In what way is this achieved? Can these features be added to Flatpak? Are automated updates available only for Snaps? Also folks talk a lot about application permissions but how to use those permissions without affecting certain features of an app? Can you add a tutorial about Snap-Flatpak permissions? Also I would like to know more about the difference of Snap vs Flatpak sandboxing. In Flatpak sandboxing is mandatory while in Snaps it is not. Some people complain about Flatpak sandboxing as marginal. I would like to know more about such minute technical specificities. Thank you!
@ thank you for the ideas! I may considering doing that
This is so cool man! Loved the video and the detail you put into everything. By the way, that editing is amazing! How long did it take you to learn all that… and how?
Thank you! Regarding the editing, I switched from CapCut to Davinci Resolve when making my "It's Time To Ditch Windows" video (regrettably I use macOS on the side for editing on a separate computer, a 2016 MacBook Pro, and editing only, everything else I do is exclusively on Linux, and I am experimenting with a Davinci Resolve Linux workflow on my other more powerful laptop), and at first I was just playing around with the effects, diving into every option and seeing what I can do, and after watching a few tutorials, I got to work with Davinci Resolve which I must admit is unbeatably good, by far my favorite video editor. I already got into keyframing multiple videos back, and for the first time learned how to make keyframe animations smoother and more complex with Davinci's keyframe editor instead of making simple basic keyframe animations. Also the transitions Davinci Resolve provides are great and highly customizable. I already had over half a year's worth of editing experience with CapCut (I started using CapCut in November of 2023) and about a month or two with Canva's built in video editor, so I had an idea of many of the video editing basics, and then I learned about the Fusion page in Davinci Resolve, which is basically where you do VFX, motion graphics, and 3D effects, this is the section of Davinci Resolve where I made most of my 3D animations in this video. The Fusion page was at first very intimidating for me since it was very complex and I was afraid of using nodes, but I got used to it and am alot more comfortable in the Fusion page now. I also just recently learned about things like adjustment clips which i used a few times in this video, in the Ubuntu portion more specifically, so I definitely still have more to learn lol, but yeah. I kinda have a passion for video editing, it's something i truly enjoy, and I've really wanted to improve at it, so I dove right in and learned, and now here we are lol
I gotta reiterate that your editing is amazing! Like - it's not just simple editing, but proper editing seen in like 'top-tier videos' (that's the best explanation I can think of currently!) And nice to see that editing is your passion - it's a hobby of mine without a doubt. Personally, I use Resolve, and have been using the latter since 2023ish. I started on Clipchamp of all things... (lol) then moved to the likes of CapCut and finally settled on Resolve. And I've loved it. It's been a really solid video editor apart from it's unstable nature, however it's not too much of an issue with me. I've also never really needed much editing, however I've recently transitioned to 'ease' keyframes via the Fusion tab, frankly painstakingly learning nodes along the way. I don't think I could edit nearly as well as you though - can't imagine how much time that would have taken. Also it's really impressive considering you are only 14 - being 13 myself I certainly take inspiration from you, as I'm striving to become a better editor and just a better content creator overall :) By the way, I've subscribed and watched almost all of your videos!!
@@MSNeptuned thank you so much! Truly appreciate the kind words :) Also great to hear it’s a hobby of yours lol, that’s awesome. Ah, other than the Clipchamp part which iirc has a similar layout to Canva aside from being a bit more useful, you seem to have a similar editing journey to mine when it comes to editing software lol. Davinci Resolve has been pretty stable for me aside from a few crashes here in there, mostly related to Crapple’s hardware and macOS, so it’s unfortunate to hear that it’s been unstable for you, any particular reasons that it crashes or are you not sure? Regarding the keyframes you’ll actually notice a little button at the bottom right of any track in the edit page that lets you smooth keyframes without needing to enter the Fusion tab, which I always use, unless you’re keyframing a 3D animation which requires using Fusion. lol I think you can get to my level with enough practice and playin around, a big portion of my video was 3D animations which have some tutorials on RUclips to help you learn about them. It did take me like 3 weeks to edit this so yea lol it took time, although that is partly because the MacBook Pro is practically a potato when previewing more complex animations in Davinci Resolve. I wish you luck with your editing and content creation journey! My original videos were definitely not on the same level as now, everyone has to start somewhere lol, also thanks, I appreciate the sub! Also hope you enjoyed my other vids lol
@@PenguinByte Honestly not sure why it crashes, lol. Regardless, it's okay - still works for me :) Also is it possible to do ease keyframes, on both zoom and position, or just one? And, yes, I did enjoy all of your videos thanks! :D
@@MSNeptuned as long as it still works! That does kind of suck tho. You can keyframe pretty much anything in the transform tab in (the one in the inspector), including zoom, X and Y position, tracking, and even effects and OpenFX like drop shadow, Gaussian blur, etc, etc. Also glad to hear you enjoyed my content!
Which distro do you use, cool editing tho, like your videos 🫰
