Karen's Pages
Добавлен 21 мар 2023
Hi, welcome to Karen's Pages. My name is Karen and I have been collecting comics and original art for a little over a decade. My favorite comic books to collect are from the Silver and Bronze Ages, although I find myself dipping into the Golden and Modern Ages from time to time. My favorite comic book artists include: Jack Kirby, John Buscema, Bill Everett, Wally Wood, and Gene Colan, to name a few.
I hope you will join me on my collecting journey. Don't forget to subscribe!

They Got It Wrong | I Figured Out the REAL STORY Behind the CGC Okajima Pedigree Comics

This video has been, by far, the most complex, challenging, emotional, and time-consuming video I have ever undertaken. I started research for this project in November 2023. By December, I had gathered enough evidence to address many of the outstanding issues regarding this Pedigree. I started recording video in mid-December, but I was not satisfied with what I did. It's still better than Venom's first cover app: A Head!!
Congrats on grabbing the JIM group!!
Oddly I noticed that the FF 39 & 40 reprint had an exchange between Ben and Johnny where the word balloons were swapped a their hair miscolored... When the Masterworks was done Vol 4 nobody noticed the screw-up!!
Just wanted to add that FF # 33 (Attuma) was reprinted in a LAncer paperback in B/w. Also MARVEL'S GREATEST COMICS May have reprinted it as well...!!
Oh man, I can’t believe I didn’t get the DD reference for your channel! lol
Even as a kid, I loved that issue of GI Joe. I wish I still had a copy of it. I used to take my GI Joe comics to school and provide my own style of commentary as to what was going on in the issue! ....and let me tell you, the ladies loved it! at least thats what I thought, I mean who didn't like G.I. Joe???
@karen’spages would you consider selling that one? I would give you double even triple what you paid here.
Great video and very informative. I had not heard of this pedigree. Sensation 35 was also my wife's first golden age book.
Karen, I thoroughly enjoyed the video. Very well done, very well researched. It's crazy to me that you talk about how you have the same taste in comics that a young woman from the 40's would have-- and then both you and Jayne get drawn to LITERALLY the same comic book. And as someone who always gets feelings about seeing people's handwriting on old books-- getting to her actual signature is so amazing, what a connection to have. Shoutout to @ComicTropes for taking me here!
Also, subbed! I just drew an issue for Archie comics reviving one of their Golden Age characters, so while researching for it, I've been in my feelings about those old 40's creators and their legacies. So it's really cool to think about those original geeks who were buying the comics-- and this is an example of one of THEIR legacies.
Great job! Congrats on your Wonder Woman purchase! Love the outtakes at the end, awesome!
What a fantastic score. Great vids, a refreshing alternative to the typical youtube comics channels. Really appreciate your obvious love of the works, and great collection! Thanks for sharing it.
I have 1 Okajima book in my collection. I treasure it :) I always say some books you collect for the story on the pages, and some you collect for the story OF the pages. thank you for adding more info to one of my favorite Pedigrees
Not seeing a lot of boxes around... just getting the best?
Sweet grab, Karen!!
Lovin' your face as you unbox a new find...!!
Very cool
Directed here from Comic Tropes. Really awesome video, such an amazing story thank you for sharing
The Sherlock Holmes of Comic books. Thank you for the all the good research!
Love that shirt. Where do I get one?
Here from comic tropes! Amazing video.
Anyone else here from Comic Tropes? GREAT VID!!
Thanks for coming over and taking the time to watch my video. ☺
Those little lines on metallic objects are sometimes referred to as reflection lines. Jack Kirby tended to use parallel thick and thin lines to denote them, especially shiny silver items or characters (like the Silver Surfer). No doubt John and Sal Buscema (and many others) borrowed some of this style on their work. George Perez tended to put a little "starburst" on his and John Byrne liked to put more texture into his technique. There are plenty of other examples, but the way they used their lines is one way to identify the penciler or inker.
Thank you for your insightful comment, Robert. I enjoy all the differences in these artists' techniques. It makes the simple things really stand out and sets each artist apart from one another. 👍
@@KarensPages You are quite welcome.
i always liked thor, too.....good buys, i hope you read and enjoy them.....the backup feature in some tales of asgard was great as well
Thanks for your comment, Curt. I'm excited to read both the main and backup stories. 👍
What a great video!
Thank you for the kind words! 👍
New sub, here... I'm starting my Comic collecting journey. I'm mostly interested in female super-heros . It's a beautiful thing 🙂
Thank you so much, Miss LadySoul! ☺ Congratulations on starting your comic collecting journey. Which female superhero is your favorite so far?
@@KarensPages: I really like Storm, Black Widow and of course Wonder Woman 😊
I appreciate your energy and joy
Honestly this would make a great movie, like from studio Ghibli
It's one of those stories that could easily become the premise of a movie. Thanks for your comment. 👍
Love RUclips for ghe fact I can view peoples comicbook collections.
Same here! 😁
Fantastic video!!! Very thorough and well researched. Nicely paced and expertly edited. Likely the most important comic book pedigree and you did it justice. Great work! cheers!
Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm glad you liked the video. ☺
Excellent work. Well researched and very interesting!
Thank you so much, Stephen! ☺
Some beautiful comics here. I have a full set of JiM/Thor, though some of the earlier ones are lower grade. Even better, though, I had the time read the whole run all the way through to the present day. It was a wonderful experience and a really great story.
Wow, that is truly incredible! Do you have any favorite issues within that run? I would like to pick up the entire Kirby JIM/Thor run at some point and read it through. I appreciate your comment, Stephen. 👍
@KarensPages I love all the Kirby issues. I will collect anything Kirby. But there are also some epic continuing stories in the 70s Thor, such as the one where Balder is shot dead with a mistletoe arrow. Something like that.
Thank you.
You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed the video! 👍
It is what is it is. Enjoy what it is. Well said.
Thank you. ☺
"Pull my finger!"😮😁😊
If you don't understanding this, ask an older man.
@@chuckiesjamochashake No, I understood it. 😄
Glad I got directed over here. This was very impressive. Great story. Great research. More expert analysis than the "experts" put forth went into this video. The work of true documentarian in the guise of a hobby. Very well done.
Thank you so much, Paul. I really appreciate your comment, especially what you said at the end about the work of a true documentarian in the guise of a hobby. What a compliment. I feel like you truly understood the intent of my video. Thanks again. ☺
Where do you buy original art?
Mostly from auctions. 👍
What a video! Wow. Thank you.
Thank you, DQ! Glad you enjoyed the video! 👍
Your work on this brings so much joy to my heart.
Thank you for the great compliment, Jay, or should I say, Juggernaut. 😉
Wow, truly stunning! You've definitely got a new fan and subscriber
Thank you so much, Nick! I'm so glad you liked the video and have subscribed to my channel. I appreciate it! 👍
Truly wonderful video. Your handle of investigative storytelling was powerfully used. Many moments of catharsis pulling strong emotions out of me. The world is a better place from you putting this work in and sharing it with others
Thank you for the wonderful compliment. It really means a lot. When I get comments like yours, it reminds me that all the time that I spent making the video was worth it. ☺
Those comic artists new the medium they were creating for. They made the artwok shine on that god- forbidden newsprint.
I know they felt like they were simply doing their job as artists, but they were geniuses. ☺
“You ruined my new jacket…kill him a lot.” 😂
"Interesting choice." "Last minute decision." 🤣
With you regarding Chic Stone. His style was truly sympathetic to Kirby's pencils in a way that Colletta, Reinman etc weren't. Those glorious, chunky outlines! My favourite inker on (late) Silver Age Kirby though? Bill Everett. His inks on #s 170-175 are to die for. Comics perfection :)
Perfectly said about Chic Stone! I like Bill Everett as well. Plus, Everett will always have a special place in my heart because he co-created Daredevil. Also, I bought a ton of Thor comics after I made this video, which include 170-175, so I'll be sure to check those issues out! Thank you for your comment! 👍
When I first became aware of Marvel's Thor I loved his costume but was turned off by Lee's faux Elizabethan dialogue. I came to my senses though (Simonson helped) and now feel Thor, his worlds, and his supporting cast are one of the very best things Lee and Kirby ever conceived. It's so cool to see your enthusiasm for him.
Thank you for your comment, Brian. Thor dialogue is part of the charm of the comic. It can be ridiculous at times, but it's mostly awesome. I'm glad you came around. 😉
Here from Comic Tropes❤❤
I appreciate you coming over to check out my channel, Alexey. Thank you! ☺
I came here from Comic Tropes' video on pedigrees. This video was an amazing level of work. Thank you for making it! The hobby needs more people like you!
Thank you for the kind words, Imran. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 👍
This is an incredible bit of work you have done. You should be very proud of the video.
Thank you, StormcastleComics! This is one of my favorite videos that I've made and it definitely took the longest time to research, film, and edit. I appreciate your comment. ☺
Tracking down that HS yearbook was, honestly, a genius idea (at least I believe so) that paid off wonderfully! The same could be said for all of the impressive amount of research done here. I was truly riveted by all of it. Well done!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the yearbook portion. I looked at multiple yearbooks and I definitely got a small sense for who the Okajima siblings were when they were younger. I'm glad you liked the video. 👍
In general, Vince Colletta did nothing for the penciler compared to other inkers. He was fast and efficient, however, and he helped books make deadlines.
I agree, Robert! 👍 Also, I'm not a big fan of his thin lines and the scratchy nature of his inks. I prefer other inkers on Kirby. But, I try to be sympathetic towards Colletta because of deadline crunches.
@@KarensPages If you have ever seen any of Mike Grell's work on the Warlord series, it is a stark example of differing inkers. Grell did his own inks originally. but he was in high demand for series and cover work, so eventually Colletta started inking over his pencils. It pained me to see it.
@@robertneal4244 I'm not familiar with Warlord, but I can imagine what the switch from Grell to Colletta probably looked like.
❤❤❤
Thank you! ☺
