    "If I had to do it all over again, I would have cut off my hands" - Wally Wood

      Wally Wood's story is a tragic one and this quote is particularly heartbreaking. He might have put too much of himself into his work without getting enough in return.

    *Wallace* Wood. He hated being called "Wally".

    • @KarensPages
      @KarensPages  11 месяцев назад +8

      I am well aware that Wood went by Wallace (his given name) or Woody (as a nickname), but it’s undeniable that most comic fans recognize him as Wally. But I definitely understand your perspective with names. My real name is Karen. Not a great name to have these days. Plus, there are no nicknames for Karen, so I can’t avoid it. When I use Wally in my video, there is no disrespect intended towards him. I think he’s brilliant.

    Good morning this is Bob in Connecticut. Wally Wood was one of the greatest artist that ever lived.. I met him once in Derby Connecticut . To tell you the truth definitely if you want to observe fantastic art just look at shock suspense. 6 of course EC definitely one of his best covers. When his original EC science-fiction artwork comes up that’s what you should bid on . EC were the best comics ever produced. They had the best artists and writers . Some of their questionable Contant made them go out of business except for mad magazine, which is still published today 71 years later I get that bi monthly for many years in the mail. In my kitchen, I still have one of the best pages of Al. Williamson science-fiction art from EC it’s from weird science 14 page 6 . Wally Wood will always be remembered for his EC artwork that was definitely by far his best work..

      Good evening, Bob in Connecticut. Thank you so much for your comment. I definitely plan on checking out more EC Comics. The sci-fi covers have always caught my eye. And it's super cool that you have a page from Weird Science!

      @@KarensPages hey good morning it’s about 9 AM. I’m just listening to Taylor, Swift and Tears for Fears.. well, when I was bartending, I was borrowing Comics and people would laugh at me and said I was out of my mind. Well, the New York comic con is bigger than the Super Bowl. I will be there in the middle of next month.. if people were only taking a chance, if they realized you could have bought the first appearance of all of the major characters about the time Iron Man came out, and you would be quite wealthy. I have one of the rarest EC books weird science fantasy annual 1 9.0 there are only two copies in that grade and there are three copies 9.2 nothing higher. I only paid $500. I would definitely get well over $10,000 if I sold it right now.. on the other hand I picked up two first appearances of Spider-Man amazing fantasy, 15 6.0 for only $4000 in New York. If I sold it right now I would get $80,000 plus.. I will never sell that I I also have Superman 1 and Batman 1 they are both restored, but they are worth much much much more than I paid . They are both graded 5.0 I pay the $12,500 for the Superman and $10,500 for the Batman . Anyway, good luck with everything. I’m not in the restaurant business anymore. My last girlfriend she did a lot of movies magazine covers soap opera she passed away. The only thing I do now is I have New York Yankee baseball tickets every year to a lot of games. Do you have any Wally Wood original art?

      @@RobertMatteis-pe7vh Sounds like an amazing collection, Bob. You were wise to have purchased those comics when you did. I think a lot of people wish they had done the same. I don't have any Wally Wood art yet, but maybe someday. Thanks again for your comments! 👍

      @@KarensPages thanks for your kind comments Karen. Well I understand you thank God I kept a lot of my good books.. I still have lots of raw EC science, fiction, and horror. Well, I gave up, bartending quite a few years ago. My ex girlfriend left me her cockatiel. His name is honey. He says hi honey she passed away I told you.. I have two other cockatiels, and I live with two small parrots. I live in a studio apartment in Ridgefield Connecticut. I basically just go to lots of New York Yankee games every year I was going to lots of concerts. I was at the Connecticut comicon at the Mohegan sun and I will be in New York on the Thursday of that comic con in October.. yes, that’s bigger than the Super Bowl and the one in San Diego is also.. good luck with everything comic book collecting and artwork is lots of fun of course very very profitable whenever you want to sell. I do have a copy of shock suspense stories.6 6.5 one of the greatest Wallace Wood covers. Bondage cover I think it was used seduction of the innocent. It was probably used in court to bring down. EC in the middle 50s.. they will always be known for the best artists and writers in the history of the industry.

    Another excellent episode, Karen! Many congratulations! The Wood Daredevil pages performed amazingly well in an auction where many Silver Age pages did relatively poorly. The page from issue 5 (the first Wood), however, did not fare as well as the ones from issue 10. Although issue 5 was all Wood, one can tell that that issue was one where Wood was finding his feet, as it were, with ole horn head. The inks on issue 10 are so much lusher and polished although one factor might be the fact that, by then, DD had his new (red) costume and, perhaps artistically, it was easier to impress with the inks.

    • @KarensPages

      Thank you so much, CAB! I agree with all of your comments. There were a lot of Silver Age pages that I thought went lower than expected. There were definitely a lot of deals to be had. The inks on 10 are simply stunning. 😁

    The other thing that’s noteworthy about the opening splash page from Daredevil issue 10 is the text box in the upper left, which is one of the few examples of Stan Lee being snide about a Marvel Bullpenner in print. It’s clear that tensions between Woody and Stan were reaching the breaking point.
    The exact text is…
    Two great surprises await you in this off-beat issue! One: This is Daredevil’s first real mystery thriller, complete with a zillion suspects, countless clues, and perplexing plots twists! Two: Wally Wood has always wanted to try his hand at writing a story as well as drawing it, and big-hearted Stan (who wanted a rest anyway) said okay! So, what follows next is anybody’s guess! You may like it or not, but, you can be sure of this… it’s gonna be different!

    • @KarensPages
      @KarensPages  11 месяцев назад +7

      Thanks for your comment. It's spot on. I wanted to mention in the video (but forgot) that DD #10 was the first DD issue that credited Wood with the script; although, he stated previously that he came up with the story for the earlier issues, but went uncredited (and unpaid).

    • @reprintranch
      @reprintranch 11 месяцев назад +6

      Thanks, glad you liked the comment. I spend a lot of time studying Wallace Wood’s life and career and, coincidentally, have been focused on Daredevil issues 5-11 lately.
      There are numerous questions I’ve been trying to answer about Woody’s DD run, mostly without success. I thought you might be interested to see some of them…
      * Did Woody communicate with previous DD artist (and former Wood collaborator) Joe Orlando, before Woody took the gig? If so, did that affect Woody’s approach to the work he did on DD?
      * Did Woody take the DD gig with the belief that it might be a viable long-term thing, or did he look at it as simply a short-term way of making some money?
      * Did Stan come up with the concepts for the villains in issues 5-9 or did Woody?
      * Why exactly was Bob Powell brought aboard for issues 9-11 and why did he depart after issue 11?
      I’m planning to produce a short essay on Woody’s Daredevil run, sometime next year. In the months that follow I will continue looking into the above questions and will address them to whatever extent I can in the essay.

    • @KarensPages
      @KarensPages  10 месяцев назад +7

      @@reprintranch These are all really interesting questions. Hopefully, your research turns up some answers. When Wood came up with the storylines, I always assumed that included the concepts/designs for the villains, too. There are some early Wally Wood DD concept sketches on Heritage right now if you haven't checked them out yet.

    She's back! Hey Karen, so nice to have you back showing us some Absolutely Spectacular art and comics, some might even say Awesome, along with your price predictions. While you look really good in a football jersey, whoever it was in your wardrobe department that decided you needed one of a player best known for getting TKO'd in his own locker room by his own teammate, needs to be fired. Some might call that an absolutely spectacular travesty! 😃
    Focusing on the the Wally Wood portion of the lots was interesting, as that material was his best output since his EC days. I wish you could get one of those pages for yourself! The pre-code horror covers are always cool, though as a woman yourself I can certainly understand you being turned off by imagery of women being strangled or otherwise tortured and killed. I love that imagery, yet it's specifically for the sheer feeling of heightened tension and terror that you feel at that moment when watching such scenes on film, NOT because I want to see women (or anyone one else, for that matter) strangled. In fact, one of my favourite cover paintings is one I didn't bid strongly enough for, for an Agatha Christie novel, featuring a closeup of gloved fists (but no other body parts attached) about to strangle a woman from behind. My friend ended up winning it and he was an even bigger fan of the artist than I was, so it made the loss easier to swallow.
    The Lee Elias Black Cat material has always been interesting, though not enough for me to want to collect it. I do love the piece of art demonstrating the judo throws, though! Oh, and I really LOVE the way that piece is presented! I wouldn't present it like that today, because as I'm sure everyone knows, the whole point of the presentation is to immediately draw the eye to the artwork itself and anything at all that distracts the eye from doing that is a no-no. So while there are no "rules" for presenting art, we all know that B&W art should never have color in the presentation simply because color grabs the eye's attention more than black or white, while colored presentation for colored art makes more sense, as long as the colors chosen for the presentation are complimentary to the artwork. This presentation of the Black Cat art works wonderfully even though it's colored, but only because today it is perfectly kitschy, due to its age. A real snapshot of its time! I would absolutely never take the art out of this frame! In fact, a friend of mine bought a Dick Tracy strip that was similarly presented, even had little Dick Tracy figurines place inside, and I told him as soon as he got it that he should NOT even consider taking the art out of that frame. Anyway, your good friend with the "rules" for presenting B&W art sounds awesome. I dare say, maybe even absolutely spectacular. I'd love to meet her someday, to discuss the finer points of art presentation. Perhaps you can put me in touch with her? Just don't tell my wife!😉
    Btw, the only "problem" with any of your videos is that we have to wait 2 weeks before we see another one! Keep up the Double D's...uh, I mean the great work!👍

    • @KarensPages
      @KarensPages  11 месяцев назад +6

      Thank you so much, Rubén!
      Geno may have gotten his jaw broken supposedly over a $600 debt, but he went on to become NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Plus, I’m not wearing the former QB’s jersey - not after blowing a Super Bowl where all he had to do was hand the ball off to Beast Mode for the guaranteed win.
      I can understand why you enjoy the pre-code horror covers and appreciate that the appeal is the intensity leading up to a particular moment (I think I would like those types of covers as well). I'm not a fan of covers that portray the aftermath, such as the classic cover for Crime SuspenStories #22.
      Just remember when you have to wait two weeks for the next video...two weeks is better than three weeks. 😉

    •  11 месяцев назад +7

      @@KarensPages You're welcome! Smith DID go on to become NFL Comeback Player of the Year, but he has already been in the league for a decade and done almost nothing. As for Russell Wilson, he was the engine that made that team win. They had a great defence for a few years, but not so good that they would've gotten as far as they did without Wilson. But most importantly, it isn't the QB who calls the plays, it's the coach. So you're blaming the wrong guy.
      I've always liked covers like the one from Crime SuspenStories #22, but only in context of the time at which they were published. Like, "Wow, I can't believe how over the top gory they used to get back in the 1950's!". I much prefer femme fatale covers, because they flip the script on the typical "woman as victim" trope, but those types of covers were found more often on paperback book covers of the 1950's, not so much on comic books.
      Oh, I forgot to mention in my initial comment that I want to commend you not only for learning about the back stories of some of the things you show, such as pedigree collections and the collectors behind them, but especially for imparting that knowledge with your audience. Well informed collectors make for better all around collectors. 👍

      It's a really interesting process and it's definitely worth reading about. In general, before the use of computers, it went something like this: pencils, lettering, inks, color guide production, color separations, photographic negatives, printing plates, and then printing. A lot of work went into making old school comics. When you learn about the process, it makes you appreciate these comics even more. 👍
