    I was born in 72 and John Buscema is always my default standard of what good comic art is. Love his stuff so much. He had so much range and such great balance in how he drew the figure. Congrats on getting such a cool piece of comic history and I appreciate you sharing it with us.

    Congratulations Karen. I know the thrill of owning a John Buscema page. I met John at SDCC the year before he died. He was a very kind man. I showed him my silver surfer page from 1969 and he took it from me to look at. He traced all the panels with his eyes, and I could feel him reliving the day he created it.

      Going into making RUclips videos, I didn't really know what to expect. But as it turns out, interacting with people in the comments section might be the most satisfying (and honestly unexpected) benefit of making videos. It's a really nice way of getting feedback, sharing stories, and getting to know everyone. I recognize almost everyone who comments because they comment on multiple videos (including you, Steve!). Congratulations on ONE Great Year and for the "FANTASTIC" piece of Classic FF pages. Yes, Joe was so trusted JB could do more loose layouts/pencils. Funny, That this was JB's 4th FF issue. I KNEW you would have the error copy! Right in your wheelhouse! I think they released it, because they just wanted to push out cheap books to kids...no cares. Same reason they never caught or cared about mis-spelling Morbius's name on ASM102. Great PRODUCTION on video again...Thanks!

      Thank you so much, CJDesign! Yes, this was very early in Buscema's run on FF. I forgot to mention that in the video, so thank you for pointing that out here. You're probably right about Marvel not caring about the error and letting it go to distribution - I actually said that in my video, but I edited it out in the final version because I wasn't entirely sure. 😅 Thank you for all of your support, CJ, I really appreciate it. ☺

    Happy 1-year anniversary! This is the absolute best original art page you've shown on your channel so far. I am a huge fan of the FF bronze age run. John Buscema and Joe Sinnott were magnificent on this original run that JB had on the FF (except for that experimentation with the Johnny's flaming hair in issues 124 & 125). As a kid (my first comic purchase was FF 149), I never realized the importance of Joe Sinnnott's ink work (I gave more credit to the penciller)--until he would not ink an issue. Then, it was apparent just how much weight he was pulling. No other inker was able to give each character such a consistent looking face.

    • @KarensPages

      Thank you so much, PBales! This is definitely one of my favorite interior pages in my collection. I love FF Silver and Bronze Age comics. I know what you mean by noticing the differences between inkers. Sinnott on Kirby's pencils and later Buscema's pencils really put the art into the stratosphere. The right artist combinations were so important. Thank you for your comment and all of your support! 👍

    Congrats on finally unboxing this great page, Karen! I really appreciate collectors who take the time to slowly and carefully examine each page they acquire. Given the cost of original art, you'd think everyone would do that, but many don't. Taking note of things such as how recognizable a character still is even when drawn extremely small in the background is important, as is noticing the various artistic changes made on the page, which gives art collectors a fascinating view and insight that goes into the decision making process artists have to make on every single page they draw. As always, showing us the published comics the page belongs to always adds to the fun, in this case even more so because you also get to inform people who may not be aware that there is an odd looking printing error and even explain how the error came into being! As always, your research and willingness to share what you learn is invaluable and truly appreciated.
    Kudos for surviving & thriving for a full year on RUclips. Your passion for the hobby, art and comics is unparalleled and your video production values continue to improve, look and feel more professional with every subsequent video you create. Happy 1st Anniversary! 🥳🎈🎊

      Thank you for your thoughtful comment, Rubén. I always worry a little about making my videos too long, so it's really nice that you appreciate all the little things that I like to do in my videos. It's also wonderful that you notice that the production value is improving because I have to learn new editing techniques every time I want to try a new effect. For this video, I tried out two new effects - sweeping across the page and popping in words as I'm saying them. I know it's only a small thing, but I try to layer different elements in the video to keep it interesting. It can be frustrating at times because I realize how much I DON'T know when it comes to editing. Thank you so much for all of your support, which started with Unboxing Episode #1. ☺

    Congratulations on your first anniversary Karen, I have to say you have put some great content into your first year and your videos have been a great asset to our you tube community, This is a great page by John Buscema but I have to say the high point for me is how it highlights the masterful talent of Joe Sinnott's inks what a talent that man had, being like yourself a collector of original art its always fascinating for me to see how a pencilers art looks different when inked by various artists for example when you look at Buscema's art here and then compare a piece of Buscema art inked by Alfredo Alcala , another example could be Kirby inked by Sinnott and another Kirby piece inked by Ayers ( who incidently would have been 100 years old the other day ) as for the colour variants ten times as expensive in higher grades does ring true because I do believe the green cover errors amounted to about 10 percent of the print run and it was also too late to pull them because of the distribution deadline, I believe that the error happened later in the print run because none of the UK price variants had the error and its generally accepted that the UK editions came off the presses first because of shipping deadlines and then the engraving plates where changed to cents copies and the date month added ( again the UK copies were not dated to give them a longer shelf life in case of hold ups as they were shipped across the Atlantic ) anyway I have rambled on and taken up too much of your time here, thanks for sharing this outstanding piece and I look forward to your next video, take care.

    • @KarensPages
      @KarensPages  2 месяца назад +7

      Wow, thank you, CaptainUk, for explaining the distribution process and timing between the UK and the US and how it affected the covers! I didn't know that and I find those details fascinating since they put everything in better perspective. Great points about pencil and inker combos, too! I think Sinnott will always be remembered as one of the all-time great inkers in comics history. Sinnott's inks are stunning on this page. I really appreciate your comment (you didn't ramble) and I look forward to the knowledge that you share. Thanks again! 👍☺

    • @captain_uk
      @captain_uk 2 месяца назад +6

      @@KarensPages Thank you for the kind words Karen, just a side bar to the distribution process , you do not find the marvel chipping on the UK variants because of them coming off the presses first, although a number of the US ones suffered from it due to the cutting blades getting blunter at the end of the print runs a notable one being AF 15 .

    • @KarensPages
      @KarensPages  2 месяца назад +7

      @@captain_uk It makes sense that if the UK variants were distributed first, they would have been cut with sharper blades. I can’t believe there is someone that likes John Buscema more than me! I didn’t appreciate him in the 90’s but I really do now. He introduced me to comics in the 70’s.
    It’s also unusual to see a woman in her 20’s or 30’s that clearly loves and appreciates comics. Generally comics are the male fantasy. I hope that doesn’t sound sexist!
    Do you have a video where you explain how you came to love and appreciate comics?

      It's been a few years since I've been in my 20's or 30's, Bill, but I'll take the compliment. ☺ I talk about how I got into comics and original art in a video that I did with Rubén DaCollector called Comic Art Show & Tell #17. You can find the video on my homepage under Guest Appearances or in my playlists. I also show a bunch of original comic art in the show. P.S. You don't come off as sexist. Thank you, crossbones! It was definitely expensive, but priced at FMV when looking at comps. Did you pick up that Hammerhead piece this weekend? I saw that it sold and thought you might have picked it up.

      @@KarensPages Well, that's cool you felt it was a fair (if expensive) price. I know that dealers have to make a profit since it's a business but wow! I like to pride myself on my supervillainy but the sticker shock on some of those prices on comic artwork put me to shame!
      And yes, I did buy the Hammerhead OHUTMU Update '89 page set! It was the most I paid for artwork from that comic series but I rationalized the purchase to the fact that it was actually 2 pages for Hammerhead and it was being sold by someone I had bought many pages from before. Not only did he accept timed payments from me so that I could add them to my collection but he also offered me a discount as well! He is just an awesome, awesome guy.
      There was a sweet Snow Serpent page from the Order of Battle comic series (the G.I. Joe version of Marvel's OHUTMU) but it was too much out of my budget (especially after I had already committed to buying Hammerhead). That was too bad because I would have loved to add a Cobra to my collection!
      Did you pick up anything at CAF Live? I saw some sweet DD and Spidey pages while scrolling through all the artwork. What do you look for when deciding to add a page to your original artwork collection? Do you lean more towards certain characters, certain artists or certain situations?

    • @KarensPages
      @KarensPages  Месяц назад +4

      @@crossbones13 I didn't pick up anything at CAF Live this year. I have my eye on a page in an upcoming auction, so I'm trying not to buy too much right now. As far as original art goes, all of the above. I definitely look for certain characters in certain situations drawn by certain artists/inkers. I tend to stick to published interior pages and covers these days, but I make exceptions from time to time (like a commission). Congrats on the Hammerhead piece. I knew it was you!

      @@KarensPages I completely understand about not wanting to spend money when having your eyes set on a piece in the future! I have my eyes on a couple of pieces on different sites and was planning on making a move on the first one but wanted to wait until after the CAF Live event this year in case there was something I couldn't resist. And I am glad I did because that Hammerhead showed up and I had to have it! So, good luck on your upcoming auction and hope to see that prospective page in a future video...

    Joe Sinnott was one of my favorite FF inkers. He was there forever, too: through Kirby, Perez, Buscema, up until (I think?) John Workman replaced him in the 1980's... Another great video. Happy Anniversary. Just a question: do you enjoy buying pages MORE than CGC comics (it seems that you get so much enjoyment from them. Keep up the great work 🐱👍

      I enjoy buying original art and comics equally. There are certain comics that I love and want to collect the entire run (raw or slabbed). And I always get excited when I pick up these types of books. With original art, it always looks WAY better and more impressive when you hold it in your hand compared to seeing a scan or photo. I'm super happy with this Buscema FF page. I think it's one of the best pages in my collection. Like you, Sinnott is one of my favorite inkers. 👍

    Those little lines on metallic objects are sometimes referred to as reflection lines. Jack Kirby tended to use parallel thick and thin lines to denote them, especially shiny silver items or characters (like the Silver Surfer). No doubt John and Sal Buscema (and many others) borrowed some of this style on their work. George Perez tended to put a little "starburst" on his and John Byrne liked to put more texture into his technique. There are plenty of other examples, but the way they used their lines is one way to identify the penciler or inker.
