    I collected a large number of USED lithium 18650 batteries from different brands. I want to build a new battery pack 8S10P (8 series by 10 parallel) for my e-bike. I have set up each battery bank with the voltage as close to each other as possible. 4.199 volts to 4.100 volts throughout 8 series. eg: bank01: 4.199volt to 4.190volt (10 batteries in parallel) bank02: 4.189volt to 4.179volt (10 batteries in parallel) .. bank08: 4.119volt to 4.100volt (10 batteries in parallel). The total voltage for the pack will be approximately < 33.6 volts. Because they are USED batteries. Therefore, they have different voltages and ampere. (Generally, 18650 batteries are 4.2 volts at max. Due to it being USED/OLD, therefore they dropped the voltage under 4.2v each. *_1) Do you think it is safe to mix the batteries with different voltages in PARALLEL, where the different voltages deviate in 1/1000?_* *_2) Do you know what the SAFE DEVIATED voltage is when connected in parallel?_* Please advise. Thanks

      I’m not an expert on 18650 battery pack building. I’d say capacity is more important than voltage. When I did pay attention to DIY packs it seems important to group your cells by capacity. And you want each battery in series to have the same or similar capacity. The lowest capacity cell group will define the usable capacity of the battery as a whole.

I’ve also seen ones where they ground 2 4/0 cables to the lynx and then have the lynx grounded to the chassis. How do you do it?

  • @skid4482
    @skid4482 11 дней назад

    Some say the Victron controllers wont charge the battery till its over 5 volts above the battery. So if I'm getting 16 volts and 18 amps it still isn't charging? That's 288 watts. If this is the case what should I do to raise the voltage? You can charge a battery with 1 amp.

    • @sotasolar
      @sotasolar 11 дней назад

      If the controller says it's charging, it's charging. Higher PV volts lets the charger work more efficiently to create more amps into the battery, which is ultimately what you want. If you have 2x 100w panels, put them in series and see how it goes. There are some instances where keeping them in parallel makes sense. Those scenarios are usually around consistent partial shade conditions or varying angles of panels. If you can get 2 panels in series and they won't be shaded or at different angles, go for it.

I went with the Multiplus II 2x120 as I wanted the capability to add shore/generator input to support when the Victron 2400 watt of inverter is not enough. I plan to repurpose my Aims equipment for a home solar battery/solar panel solution to power my laundry room, water heater and second fridge/freezer to save on power bill but also to help if we lose grid.

    • @sotasolar
      @sotasolar 16 дней назад

      If on an RV and you want as much as possible, stick with 200w panels. Better to put 10-14 200w panels than 3 500w panels. If for a house / office grid / ground mount or rack on an RV , yea great choice. If used, skip it. New ones are so much better and there is a degradation to them over time. With all the work and time it takes, do it right, get the most power you can. Only caveat would be if it’s for a ground mount in a farm or cabin, where having 2-4 extra panels is no big deal, then by all means, save some money and start cheaper.

    I’ve been watching your Videos lately and have a question. Why are people installing victron multiplus 2x120 when they don’t need 240 or they will install two for 5000 watts output what they could one quatro to get 5000 watts output. Rv’s don’t need split phase since nothing runs on 240 so why these spit phase units? Especially when victron makes single phase units. I’m thinking of upgrading my new camper it’s a 50 amp. What’s the advantage of these split phase units and do I have to use one for the fifty amp service breaker box?

    • @sotasolar
      @sotasolar 17 дней назад

      That’s a great question the purpose of the 2 x 1 20 versions of the Victron multi plus is it automatically passes through 240 split phase from a 50 amp but then when you’re inverting there’s a relay inside that joins the hot legs together as if you’re on 30 amp just like you’re saying. Without this functionality, you’d have to convert your coach to an effective 30 amp system.. on my own personal RV that’s exactly what we did. I run to multi +3000 in parallel and they’re the older versions without 2 x 1 20 and we run two air conditioners, electric hot water pretty much everything we need without a problem. If you have a 50 amp RV, the 2 x 1 20 multiplex inverter is the perfect one for your system

    • @Mark-ry4ye
      @Mark-ry4ye 17 дней назад

      @@sotasolar wouldn’t a quatro be a better choice for higher wattage demands of two ac’s I’m guessing in would take up less space than two multiplus 2x120 and no difference in price and would it be easier to wire?

    • @sotasolar
      @sotasolar 17 дней назад

      @@Mark-ry4ye Quattro is 3 wire input, 50 amp coach is 4 wire, to use a Quattro would require rewiring the main panel. We need to be a bit more conservative when it comes to modifying existing systems. For many folks they just want it to "work" . You're not wrong, you can definitely do that, we might even do it on our own rig (See JD's mega 10kw Victron Mulitplus video). We just can't rock the boat / rv too much when it comes to changing things down stream. I've approached some customers on the idea, always met with looks of confusion and apprehension.

    The more I watch solar videos, the more I learn I don’t know a thing, lol. I totally get the series vs parallel and how they are different, mostly understanding how batteries work. My confusion is as follows. If I understand correctly, more Amps is what charges faster? If you run parallel, the amps stay the same, series, amps go up, help me understand. My main thing I want to do is as follows. I have an rv with a Go power solar starter kit. 190 watts, 10 gauge wire to the charge controller that is 30 amps. Series or parallel to add 2 more x 200 watt panels? Or, can you wire in series, voltage goes up, amps stay the same, you can put more solar, but is it really any gain? Sorry, but that stuff is so confusing, just when I think I understand, I learn that I don’t totally, lol Many thanks in advance

    • @sotasolar
      @sotasolar 19 дней назад

      Great questions. Yes amps charges the battery , more amps into the battery is better. What this video tries figure out is, what is the best method for doing that. There are two sides to a solar charger, the PV side (solar) and the battery side. Amps really only matter on the battery side. An MPPT solar charger will adjust voltage and amps to extract the most power possible from the solar panel(s) and push the most amps into a battery. The Go Power on you have is likely a PWM controller. It’s works differently and likely you need to run a panel in parallel. The PWM charger is basically a switch that turns on and off quickly to regulate current into the battery. When the switch is on, the solar panel is directly connected to the battery. In that case the PV amps and battery amps are identical. I hope I’ve not confused you throughly, just a little. :-)

    Very cool. We just picked up a 2007 Itasca Navion and I have intentions of doing something like this in it. This is going to sound crazy but I'm thinking about using a trailer hitch cargo carrier to build out a removable battery and inverter box that could be installed on several different rigs depending on the needs of the particular mission for that vehicle. There's just so little space in these tiny Class C's that it's hard to justify giving up any amount of storage for the electrical equipment. Well done on this installation, as always!

    • @NoelBarlau
      @NoelBarlau 23 дня назад

      @@sotasolar It'd be something like that but with a small generator as the primary recharge source and the vehicle alternator as a secondary source. We stay at enough Harvest Host sites that don't allow overnight generators that this type of solution could make sense for our usage scenario. I'd love to do it on solar entirely, but these tiny units don't have enough roof area to reliably run an A/C unit overnight in my opinion. I already have 16x 306aH EVE LFP cells ready to go, as well as a 3kW charger/inverter. This should give me over 15kWh of capacity for running the A/C and other loads during quiet hours overnight. Also I just installed a Micro-Air Soft Start so start inrush current won't be a problem with either the inverter or a suitcase generator. If you couldn't tell, I absolutely detest trying to sleep when it's hot and muggy.

    Do you have the specs on the 200watt solar panels (size, dimensions, performance specs) you use on rooftop? I am endeavoring to optimize the rooftop solar on my bus conversion between the hatches. I currently have six, 250watt Trina polycrystaline panels on two superstrut rails in a train rail config (two rails length of bus between the hatches). I am considering putting superstrut rails across the roof (side-to-side) resting on the two rails in order to more efficiently mount panels to use the space up to about the edge of the roof.

      @@sotasolar they are pricey! More than the 400+ watt panels.

    I've been feeling stuck between going with 2x eg4 12v 400ah batteries or 3x SOK 280ah. I realized when watching one of your other videos that the EG4 is basically going to limit me to something like 1,440 watt (60a BMS) or 2,400-watt (100a BMS) draw before surpassing its max discharge rate and auto shutting down. Am I understanding that right? So my 3000 watt inverter is basically useless because it's limited by the EG4 batteries? The SOK can just discharge casually at 200a so with 3 I'll literally never be limited by the batteries discharge? Am I understanding all of this correctly? Reason I ask is, I will run an AC unit and a coffee roaster and routinely hit about 2,500 watts (from the inverter) for fairly short periods. Thanks!

      The EG4s we used did not work well on 12 or 24v , 48 might be different. There is a reason they don’t make an appearance on the channel much. :-)

    Before you run the wire, wouldn’t it be easier to mark each roll and put a piece of tape on the end with positive one negative one positive two, negative 2?
