Checking for wear on a Myford Lathe (ML7) + Essential Upgrades

In addition to the things mentioned in the video you may also want to consider: 1. Condition of the electrics 2. Condition of the motor (i.e. noise) 3. Backlash and condition of topslide/compound slide screws. My #Myford #ML7 #lathe condition was a complete unknown and I thought time to establish what wear and play there was. Reason #13, if you already own a lathe, even if it was a mistake and now you're more-or-less stuck with it. Mine is a PoS 13x40, made in the famed PoS Works in Shanghai in the 1970s and sold by a PoS tool company... you get the idea. Still, it does turn things maybe even to a thou if you're very, very careful. O_O It will not be getting a restoration.

I have used a Myford from time to time, I currently own a Boxford. I found a lack of rigidity, I have a (probably bad) habit of leaning on the tail stock to view what I am doing and once when using a dial indicator at the chuck end a significant error was introduced by my leaning.

I would probably go with a Colchester or Bantam as an upgrade if I ever felt the need - so far, no real desire.

After watching your seeming pointless moan about your Myford I find many of your comments are somewhat sad. As if one is expecting to machine parts larger than can be accommodated by a Myford yes I agree. But this should have been understood and set out when investing and planning upon the acquisition of a new lathe. Re replacing bearings, well there is nothing stopping you machining up a new set your self as in your stating `your model engineering interests?` as no doubt someone `out here` will give you details of the bearing sizes. Re gearbox, well just how much screw cutting do you intend to do or come to that slow speed (back gear engagement) machining too? Difficult to set up the oilers, come come, I employed a jam jar with a hole cut in the lid to set up not only oilers this size but also some three and four times the size, whilst sitting at the bench enjoying a brew. Remembering to switch on and off at the start and end of a session, also old piece of towel can be set beneath the end bearing to soak up any oil and as it passes through the bearing removes any swarf or dirt accumulated upon. This towel can then be employed to wipe down any non sliding surfaces to prevent corrosion setting in. As per bedway not being hardened, why should they my Myford is a 1947 build, and cast iron is a self lubricating material, okay oil assists sliding, but if kept well lubricated I see few issues with wear and it also help control swarf which can then be easily wiped away. My `K` series Myford is in Rootes Blue, not Myford Grey and looks as if its just come out of the factory as it is in not only employing a lathe its looking after and cleaning down is just as important as is in its use of the machine. Come to that any tool in my workshop comes under this scrutiny too. But don`t look at the Chaos on the bench. I gave £1125 for mine and have never regretted a penny spent as it does for all my needs and a few more that are beyond some, as I too am a time served Fitter/turner machinist for over fifty years and still use the lathe, one of four I own still and regularly. Before the Myford (Rachel) was acquired I made do with a Sherline and a Norfolk mini lathe and skill to manufacture parts out of size of the lathes limits. Remember one employs tools to suit ones requirements, but I never moan about some of the so called shortfalls after, as these have been covered in my initial planning requirements. As one has to improvise and adapt each and every job sometimes and that’s developed only with use and skills acquired over years and years, not from RUclips videos or books.

Given the choice, I would have a Colchester in a heartbeat, even an old one (1950's? Mascot, Chipmaster or even the much older 'Roundhead') Still regret selling mine even though it was over 30 years ago and I was leaving the country. A Triumph 2000 would be personal choice as I used one for years at incredible tolerances for manual machining (five micron tolerance, for production/piece work in late1970's) The amount of information and plans for Myford though....................you can find just about anything you can think of plus a load of stuff you never thought of to make your own tooling and attachments. Pretty sure I have drawings for new dials 'somewhere' Harald Hall site should have a load of plans and parts (he was editor of Model Engineers Workshop in early 90's)

Any time I think about a Super7 I think I should just get a Colchester, but now like with Apple fans I'm in the Myford ecosystem - the only thing I'm missing (other than more rigidity) is really power crossfeed and a larger bore - neither of which are the end of the world...

A very concise and logical explanation on the downside of the Myford ML7 lathe. In Ontario Canada these are becoming less popular due to the resale cost of import 10x22 lathes. Yet we still see sellers trying to flog their middling example of a myford for over $4000. I keep toying with the idea of buying a myford to restore and modify, with a new filled and blocked paint job, new 3phase motor & VFD, new electronic lead screw and hand scraped ways. But then I have a chipmaster I'm giving that treatment. Maybe a super 7 would be worth the effort but nah I cant see an ML7 in my future for all the reasons you state

I;ve gone for a Drummond lathe which Myford took over for war production around 1940 & called it the ML4 it is smaller & lighter than the ML7 which is a bonus as I can [with some parts removed] pick it up & move it on my own, it will do all I need of it & when I built a 5" simplex I made tools jigs as I went as special parts tooling were not available, I did have a Raglan Little John at first I never needed the larger capacity & it took 3 men [again parts removed ] to move it

Hello William, I like your lathe, one can manufacture lots of parts on it, all the complaints you mentioned shouldn't have been raised, I own a Hercus 9-inch lathe with tapered roller bearings, I purchased it brand new in 1973 and I still have it as of august 2024. now a days one can buy third party accessories on eBay for hobby lathes at reasonable prices for example taper turning attachment that mounts in the tail stock, plus a ball turning attachment, there are many other attachments. As a note a good machinist never blames his tools.😃
