- A build series of a "Maid of Kent", a Curly Lawrence designed #steam #train #locomotive in 5" gauge using real #livesteam, built using traditional tools and materials by an amateur #machinist in a home workshop.
Oh William. That’s a joy to behold. Wow, you can be “well chuffed”. 👏👏👍😀
Groan ;) Yes, I'm as pleased as pudding. Onto the next challenge...
@@williamsworkshopuk So looking forward to seeing how this progresses. Good luck, and keep going. 👏👏👍😀
You are right when you said it was stressful to setup. The rolling chassis looks very cool
Thank you - all done now and hopefully plain sailing (albeit a lot of sailing lol)
I take my hat off to you sir, well done! 🎉😊
Thank you kindly!
Well done. All the heart ache and stress gone. For now at least, until the next hurdle...lol
Regards Kevin
HA! I thought exactly the same thing - At some point I've got to just get on with it, I guess?!
Awesome work William. I'm glad that's you stuck with it and got it done. It must feel good to have a rolling chassis. Look forward to further updates. Cheers
Thanks 👍
Great. And that little hard spot will quickly dissapear whe you run it in.
Thanks MIchel - I did open one bearing out a little bit to make it less stiff but now I'm leaving well alone. What to do next? Hmmm...
Congrats chap considering what you inherited was unknown you have done great
Thank you chum, the major hurdle I think is complete - trying to figure out what to tackle next!
Good job, always a stressful time doing the quartering, on any gauge.
👍👍🚂🚂👍👍cats got the cream😉👍🚂
😁
Hi William. Congratulations in quartering the wheels. It's always good when things go right.
Thanks 👍 The entire subprocess was fraught and not enjoyable but now it's done I can get back to the fun stuff
Hi William, awesome work there - your coupling rods will need clearance in the bushes or the whole lot will lock up on uneven track.
Looks brilliant well done. I use a clock broach to ease the bearings, you do want a bit of slack. 😀
I haven opened them out about 10 thou and it's a good deal better now, thank you!
Obviously the tight spots are caused by the Coupling Rods being installed upside down. All joking aside, did you try flipping the rods from side-to-side ? That tight spot really isn't much considering the wheels don't lock up with so little weight on them - great job !
HA! I did notice that before. Swapping sides/orientations hasn't helped but I've managed to get all the stiffness out by opening out one coupling rod bearing by about 15 thou so I'm going to leave well alone now!
Congratulations it's looking really good, long way to go though.
Thanks! You're absolutely right of course, but this was an area where I felt the most apprehension, as a composite of so many other parts that can only be tested when all together.
Rock Star 👍
HA! I'm not sure about that, every time I watch your videos my deficiencies in experience, talent and result are brought into sharp relief - hopefully I can bumble on and bring to completion and the NEXT one will aspire to be the museum piece your loco is becoming :)
@@williamsworkshopuk by successfully building your crank and quartering the wheels, you can now be confident that there's nothing on the chassis that you can't do. Rockstar is a well earned mantel 👍
I'm no expert, but that looks very good to me. Tight spots ? Nit run in st all yet. Well done.
Thanks George, I really appreciate the good vibes :)
A touch of Brasso in some oil and bed them in. Then wash out the Brasso and replaces with oil and run in.
Thank you! I opened the bearings out a few thou on one side and it is smoother , but I’m going to leave the rest to wear in.
Nice job, just needs running in
Thank you! I did open out one bearing very slightly (~12 thou) to smooth things more but it's working well, I've got to stop fiddling with it now!
