Thanks for the update. Hope all is going well with the missus: my kids all arrived late, so I know it's an anxious time. The replacement chuck looks like a big improvement, although some deflection on a bar of the length you had in the lathe would be expected even with a new chuck. Having got my Super 7 operational, I am now tackling a Speed 10, which is causing me a deal of frustration, especially as the Myford manual is pretty hard to understand in places. A photograph of the change wheel arrangement for fine feed seems impossible, with no change gear appearing to mesh with the leadscrew. Happy Days.

The 2B comes with a huge coolant and chip tray - it's about 3' square - but I'm afraid I won't be using any coolant with my mill. Not only have all the pumps been removed at some point, but the motor now sits directly under the coolant drain channel!
As to grinding: you are correct that grinding creates a concave form in the jaws, BUT that is only if you leave it to that. After correct grinding take the jaws out, dial them in on your mill referencing the deepest point of the concave surface, and then grind them flat.
I don't have a grinding tool on my mill (I guess I may be able to using the horizontal mode but there's a little runarout) but that's a good point. Maybe something to experiment with, with the old chuck!

Welding the arbor is maybe not a good idea. Welding could generate desortion.
