Ballistic gel testing experimental heavy broaching on the 30 caliber 150 grain Badlands Bulldozer 2 to see if they would expand faster/quicker on low velocity impacts. I used an 8 inch 300 AAC/Blackout pistol 1:7 twist for this test. As can be seen in the video there is no noticeable difference at lower velocities.

    Thanks for the test One thing I want to understand is -why there are so many tests on 'impacting at muzzle velocity' ? No one is hunting with the rifle stuck on the animal, especially with a 300PRC - why not test a reduced load to 2200-2400fps to see actual expansion at range rather than what it would look like had someone used their rifle as a speargun?

    • @simplemindedfella
      @simplemindedfella 18 дней назад

      @peteee1067 I get what you're saying. My test are on the bullets themselves, and my intentions are to find the absolute max velocity for not getting total fragmentation and minimum that still has a decent mushroom, creating preferred permanent wound cavities in 10% gelatin. Therefore, all my are 25-30 yards. Right at the muzzle would not be safe. Someday, I do plan on doing more tests of in between velocities imulating different ranges with different cartridges. That way, one only needs to know their bullet and muzzle velocity regardless of cartridges to know the performance at various ranges.

Iv also used quite a few hammer hunters mono bullets they tens to shoot better than barns and kill quite a bit quicker.

    Great real world discussion. My son and I have extensive experience on big game...moose, elk and whitetails. We hunt northern Ontaroo... and call in our bulls. So very controlled hunting scenarios. Weve taken 40 moose going back 40 years... and recently ...10 elk kills in 10 yrs..... all but 10 or so with our 270s and about 10 with our ruger 35 whelen. For moose we heavily favor the 270 and have landed on the Barnes tssx 130 gr. We have killed MANY with it. We get complete passthroughs on 90% of harvested animals. Dead right there, 6 ft straight down dead. Recovered bullets are magazine quality mushrooms. Virtually ZERO shock damaged meat. Every elk we've killed with that combo has been a complete passthrough. Ive also killed several big bulls with 140gr accubonds. Also very effective. Almost all recovered from moose in skin on far side. Textbook bonded bullet performance and great penetration.. Re Whelen ... 225 gr accubond is impressive on big bull elk. Emphatic kills. The 225 grain TBBC I find TOO stiff. Passthroughs on all animals shot....with some run. 200 and 250 gr corelokts work great too.... id say about the perfect combo for deer in that caliber. For reference... we use the high shoulder shot in virtually all situations except for 250+ yds... which is pretty rare. At that range we shade back a few inches to ensure double lung. Our goal is to drop game where it stands and eliminate long drags and removals. Especially with moose and big elk. We consider the 270/130gr Barnes combo the best and use it primarily for everything. But I like to experiment more than the boy... and love my whelen... and have found the accubond hard to beat. Looking forward to using it on an elk here shortly with the 200 gr barnes I bought. That bullet with the big frontal diameter of the 35 oughta be VERY impressive. We sight in 3" high at 100yds with our guns to best apply the MPBR concept and it has never let us down. And yes.. I actually try and use a variety of bullets... keeps it fun and I like to evaluate real world performance. At our ranges...hunting situations.. zero issue with interchanging...ever.

    Accuracy is low down the list. Otherwise black powder muzzle loaders, handguns and bows shouldn't hunt. Too much sniper mentality - get in close, do some actual hunting.

    • @simplemindedfella
      @simplemindedfella Месяц назад

      @finallyfriday. it does not matter how close you are if you can't guarantee a shot to the vitals. Also know as accuracy. Bow, balckpowder, pistol does not matter if you can't place a clean kill shot. I'm in total agreement that Americans in particular have left the sport of hunting for long-range shooting of game animals, and we need to get back to the sport of being a good hunter getting in close with the game. Most of the deer I have taken with my rifle the last few years I could have taken with a bow because I love the stalking/hunting that so many have gone away from for lack of patience and skill. It's easier to become a better shot than a better hunter. We need to be better hunters, in my opinion.

    • @finallyfriday.
      @finallyfriday. Месяц назад

      @simplemindedfella In the east the average deer is shot at approx 50 yds, often shorter. The vitals area is well over 8" dia. MOA is irrelevant unless you've targeted a specific aorta. Hyper accuracy does not trump good hunting skills and replace hunter shooting skills. Instead of buying the "latest and greatest" it's more prudent to be a good shot with an adequate weapon. How on earth did mountain men, trappers and pioneers EVER put meat in the table without high tech sniper rifles and zenith qualities in precision target rifles? Not that some of the gear isn't "cool" but it's not an adequate replacement for practice, stalking, studying game habits and habitats and familiarity with a sufficient weapon.

    • @simplemindedfella
      @simplemindedfella Месяц назад

      @finallyfriday. Mountain men trappers and pioneers put meat in the freezer by knowing the range of accercy and effectiveness of their firearm and aim small miss small don't waste a shot. Yes, all those skills are just as important, but a gun shooting 20 MOA may not hit target/vitels at 50 yards. 8 MOA would be adequate for a 50-yard shot but stll less that desirable.

    1st, Terminal Ascent is one of, if not the best hunting bullets ever created. I have taken elk with it from my 300wsm from 40yds - 490yds. All had perfect straight line penetration, the bullet held together at 40yds with my magnum, and the BC on the 200gr 30cal is 0.608. I have used other bonded bullets that worked almost as well, like the Norma BondStrike which is also very good, but I have had bullets deflect once inside the animal and expanded. Nothing major, still one shot kills. The Fed TA drills straight-line through the animal, through bone, fluid, no deflection. If you shoot the exit like I do, you can be certain the TA will follow the trajectory it entered the animal on. I have not had a bullet so devastating. Also, Berger bullets suck ass for hunting. I have personally seen a 180gr 308 hit an elk in a rib at 200yds and completely fragment. It did not penetrate more than an inch or so, skin and hide blew everywhere, and the animal started to run. A 2nd shot took it down. Neither bullet penetrated, both fully fragmented with jacket and lead everywhere, just like your video showed. It took two shots from a magnum and left the meat heavily contaminated with lead and copper fragments throughout the meat. Literally terrible bullet performance I also watched a white tail shot with a Berger, 308, 168gr. The animal turned when the shot was taken, the bullet entered the stomach cavity high, in front of the left hind quarter headed towards the left hindquater exiting diagonally out the back left hind quarter. Not a great shot to begin with, but the Berger finished the poor shot. It pentrated about half way the violently grenaded and litterally shredded both hind quarters, blood shot everything, and left copper jacket and lead powder/fragments everywhere. It was a total loss of the hind quarters and half of both backstraps from the Berger detonation. A bonded or copper bullet would have wasted some meat on the poor shot, but the harvest would still be successful and the animal still eaten. The Berger was the reason for near total loss on the meat. Berger bullets are for paper only!

I’ve taken two deer with it and it is almost too destructive (and thats coming from someone who swears by match/fragmenting bullets for hunting!) I’m confident it would rip the front half of a gel block into shreds, its that ridiculous.

    Why does that middle one look like the lead is way off center? Is that just the camera or was the core shifted that much??

      @neilmurphy4301 the ABLR. It's got to be either how it was ground down, the camera angle, or a combination of such. The ABLR'S are one of my favorites and by far most used.

    Thats super slow and they are meant to hit hide and rib cage, not soft gel

    • @simplemindedfella
      @simplemindedfella 3 месяца назад

      You have to move them slow when trying to find the minimum velocity they will still perform at. As far as for gelatin there has been lots of studies done to create testing mediums and the industry has settled on 10% gelatin when testing for hunting purposes and that does take into consideration bone and hide. Live/green bone and hide have minimal effect on a bullet. I have confirmed that with my own testing.

    Fantastic performance! The Speer 140 Gold Dot should be devastating on deer out of a 6.5 Creedmoor, 260 Rem, 6.5x55! Your videos are excellent!!!

    I'm a big "no" for a non-expanding bullet. I have a load for a 156 gr Norma Oryx from my .260 REM that, if I ever find a moose, will be my choice. Of course, they disconinued the design. :-(

    ELDX not menrtioned in this vid. Interesting... Mulling over ELDX vs. ABLR at 6.5 cm, 308 win, 300PRC @ distance (sub 2850fps velocities). Have full confidence in TBT as they shot well in 308 but trying to dumb it down for good performance on deer deer AND heavier elk..

    • @simplemindedfella
      @simplemindedfella 3 месяца назад

      I only use the ELD-X in rifles that I have set up with muzzle velocities at or under 2700 fps because of how bad they come apart. ABLR's are what I currently use the most and absolutely love them.

    Great infor! Sadly i have been reloading since the 80's and alway firm believer in cup and core bullets, one i favor was 170gr round nose soft point out of 308 and 06 running around 2700fps max did beautiful on deer and elk out to 400 yards. Though now days bonded and all copper bullets are starting to take the show!

    • @simplemindedfella
      @simplemindedfella 3 месяца назад

      @nathanhatcher7096 with increased velocity, a bullet with more integrity is necessary. I have a few rifles that I mostly have used for doe management but have also harvested bucks and elk with that I use cup core bullets in. They all have muzzle velocities between 2500-2700 fps. I have a 6.5 Creedmoor that I have shooting the 140gr ELD-M's at 2600 fps. That's my go to doe management gun. I have dropped everyone I have shot with that gun to just over 600 yards. Cup and core and be extremely effective and not destroy meat if ones muzzle velocities are not too high.

    I have a question. Can a gun smith shorten my long range hells canyon max long range? I am wanting to get a suppressor but its already 26 inches and afraid that its going to Be way too long to hunt with walking through the trees. Be like 32-34 in barrel. Wanting to cut it down to like 22 inches. Thanks.

      @Devon_Rea some gunsmiths may be reluctant because of the fluting. It won't hurt anything. Esthetics, maybe, but that's it.

      30ish yards on a whitetail doe. I like them on smaller and medium sized game with muzzle velocities around 2700 fps and have harvested whitetails from 30-600 yards with them.

    Late to the vid, but you should try the Accubond LR. It is designed to open up at lower velocities at long range. But then, it might not do so well at higher velocities. I'll keep looking for a vid on these.

      @johnrussell2003 I haven't tested the ABLR in 0.284, but I have in 0.308 and 0.264, and they are one of the better all-around bullets.

    Have you considered doing any gel testing of the Apex Outdoors mono bullets? I think your approach to this testing is far more valuable and realistic than most of the impact testing I have seen. Keep up the good work! :)
