  • Ballistics gel testing the 150 grain 30 caliber Cutting-Edge Maximus for one of my subscribers in 10% ballistics gelatin at high velocities testing the integrity of the bullet and at low velocity simulating longer distance shots in game animals. First shot is a reduced load out of a 308 Winchester, second is full load out of a 30-06, and lastly a full load out of a 300 PRC. The Maximus line of bullets from Cutting-Edge never cease to impress me on how well they perform ballistically over a very broad range of velocities.
    Low velocity round had a retained core weight of 110.5 grans, mid range had a retained core weight of 113.3 grains, and high velocity round of 99.7 grains.
    I don't currently use Cutting-Edge bullets because most of my rifles have to tight of tolerances and the seal-tight band wont fit in the free-bore causing in some cases presser spikes similar to ramming bullets into the lands because the bullet can't start its travel without instant resistance. Between presser spikes and no bullet seat depth adjustment room it can be tricky to get Cutting-Edge bullets to shoot good. If you can the Maximus line is a very lethal bullet and an excellent option in monolithics for big game hunting.

    Thanks for testing these bullets. They performed great and would be a good choice in lead free hunting areas as long as the seal-tight doesn't interfere with bullet seating depth for accuracy.

      You're welcome. Yes if these shoot accurately they would be an excellent option for hunting all big game in the US.

      Your welcome.
      I have never had those types of issues with the Maximus line he could be referring to the match tactical hunting line as I have found with certain calibers they do not open up the tip bends over and the bullet tumbles. Moore so at high velocity then low with the match tactical hunting failing to open and shed petals.

      Tumbling in the target? Or tumbling coming out of the barrel? Or doing the weird thing where it kinda turns sideways in the target, bends and smashes, instead of opening?

      @@simplemindedfella i saw that vid, those bullets look crazy. Was wondering if it was the same issue on the game animals. Also why you would shoot 12 if they did not work well on the first few animals.. but i digress.

    I know this is a personal preference thing, but for me one of the main reasons for going monolithic is to reduce meat damage. I would love to see some carcass photos of animals shot with these bullets, because im guessing it will look just as bad as when shooting something with an eldx

    • @simplemindedfella

      I haven't used the Maximus bullets for hunting but yes the way they shed their peddles I would expect similar terminal performance as an eld-x with better overall penetration.

    • @simplemindedfella
      @simplemindedfella  Год назад +2

      @@hikenmikes8262 I have used Hornady, Nosler, Barnes, Cutting-edge, and all of them did well. I just made the switch to Hammer after how well they tested, have not used them in the field yet. The terminal performance in gelatin was outstanding and I still can't get over how accurate and easy it has been to work up loads with them and if your someone that likes really high velocities Hammer's design allows them to travel down the barrel with minimal resistance giving higher velocities with less pressure.

    I tested CEs one season taking 12 big game animals, wolf, deer and elk. Very disappointing results, every animal had to be dispatched with a second round because the alloy is too soft and they frag to early and smaller frag than say a Hammer. All wound channels were only a little over half an inch at all ranges from 200 to 825, all animals recovered but because of shot placement not bullet function. For a mono Hammers are the only one I've put in big game that created the internal destruction nearing the Bergers. CEs we're one of the biggest disappointments I've shot, like everything about them till trying to kill something!

      Which product line from cutting edge? The Maximus is the only one I haven't had failures with and would recommend. Yes in general hammer bullets are far superior to cutting edge.

      I shot a 60 kg hog at a distance of 250m with CE maximus 6.5 crmr. It dropped at the spot but a minute latter I had to shoot it again because it tried to drag itself to the woods. First shot behind the shoulder second to the neck. Foxes, honey badgers were down for good with one bullet.
