My 86 250r was in the family many years and was abused but slowly I’ve invested into it and it’s really starting to come around. Like you said, in the long run you can have a nice machine. Weird question. I recently picked up a 85 200x and can’t seem to find the answer online anywhere. Do you know how much play is supposed to be in the shock bushings? I feel like the ones I have have way too much play. Probably not helped by the previous owner using a carriage bolt that was too small. Thanks for the help.

What kind of flood was it ocean salt water ? That’s a lot if rust

Anyone that sinks an oil cooled machine either drain the oil asap if it sets then you need to pull an oil cooler line and blow air threw the oil system . I’ve had countless of em that would only run till they got hot after they sunk it and I’ve had to blow compressed air threw the oil lines and flush em out . The sludge that comes out is crazy and it’s crazy becouse I’ve had dealers that couldn figure out why and the would rebuild them and people get them back an they would run till hot starving oil and they never flushe the oil ports in the engine an system . . So if u sink em flush that engine asap if u wait a day or so it’s ganna turn to sludge in the oil passages an lines if it’s got an ext oil tank or cooler

I had a 250 like that growing up. Ended up going through a lake one day. One of the closest time I came to dying. Still can’t remember how I ended up on shore. After getting it out and by the way it didn’t sink. Floated upside down. Four oil changes later I kept getting milky oil and my dad told me just drive it and the engine heat will evaporate the rest of the water. Stop wasting money on oil. He was right. Sadly a few year later one of my other friends didn’t make it when he went through the lake by himself one night.😢

I’m a Polaris guy myself, but I just picked up a Honda 400 EX and I noticed it’s missing the airbox and everything. Are you able to fabricate one or put one of those cone filters on the carburetor?

I have done the same but different, I took the oil drain bolt out and the fill cap out then used a propane torch to help heat the metal and water up to get out worked pretty good only had to change the oil and filter once.

We had an 1983 Bonneville car that sat at the bottom of the lake Simcoe for a month finally got it out before break up and drove it for another 2 years. Gages never worked again and it always smelt like fish but it drove just fine. We put it in the garage got the fire going and had it running in a couple days

It's not hard to save a flooded ATV especially carbureted But first thing you don't do is let it sit for 3 months With all the water in it.

In our area because only a 250 and not 4x4 only worth about 1200 to 1400. 400 but still got new battery, couple oil changes, starter solenoid, air filter and lots of cleaning. But should still make some profit and on to the next.

Great save! 2 Recon rear end jobs this month alone at the shop. Both full of mud and some water, all the lube pushed out and new axles, bearings and seals, even the pinion was rocking in place. Both had hubs welded of course! Very lucky it wasn't the ES model, but again, you seem to have lived the kind of life that allows you to be rewarded on a pretty regular basis, enjoy. I would yank the staples out of that seat cover, separate the foam from the base and stand it up to let gravity help drain the water, then let the fan have it's way with it. Those little drain holes won't allow enough air in there to dry it. The heaviest saturated seat I ever recovered was from a Polaris Sportsman 500 that weighed in ay about 30 lbs. wet. Keep on the path that you chose.

These 250s had 2 common issues. Oil pump chain failure and rod bearing failure.

When I'm holding something I won't use a penetrating oil I don't want to lubricate the cylinders my brake clean it as I'm doing it to clean all the metal out

No head gasket

If it was stuck on the exhaust side a lot of times does the vacuum leak

If it was the stock cylinder it would be a chrome cylinder that can't be bored out

You can get free bars out of it then you would have to get a new sleeve put in which if that's been bored it's already had a sleeve put in it
