HOW To RESTORE Your DATA from the Cloud to Your QNAP NAS
Hi I wonder if you can help me with this question.....I have 4 x6 gig drives in a raid 5 configeration ....bay 4 has now failed......if I replace this drive with a 14gig drive and then replace the other three one at a time with 14 tb drives would I have full use of the 4 x 14tb in a raid 5 configuration.....hopefully that made sence
hello sir, I have a problem in QNAP having QuTS h5.2.3.3006. I migrated data from old nas to this new nas and users started storing new data from 13 jan 2025 and after 10 days on 23 jan 2025, users informed us that there data stored from 13 jan is not in the folders. WE checked the data and it was moved into recyclebin automatically without any user action like delete. We recoverd the data to respective users but the MS excel file from users data has lost of records that were updated after 13 jan 2025. We could not identified the reason of moving that data and excel file are big issue for our IT department. Plzzz help in this.
Does this offer the memories feature like in Onedrive?
Great video.
Thank you, this was a very useful guide for my new NAS. One note, I did choose the Red Hat VirtIO ethernet but it didn't work, it said "it said "unidentified network" on "let's connect you" page. Going to driver folder didn't help to install drivers didn't help. • Tried "Hit shift + F10 > then type/write OOBE\BYPASSNRO and hit enter." It'll restart and when you get to the same screen you'll see something like "Continue with limited setup" and you can proceed to installing Windows without a connection.
So if I understand this correctly, I backup a folder with images, once a week I do another backup of the same folder, will all new images in that folder be backed up (only) or will it redo the entire folder every time? Then when I restore to a new NAS, will it restore the all images, even the new images of do I have to do something else?
I'm considering this NAS, but I need guidance in order to make sure it its a fit. When I contact dealers, they refer to qnas. Would you be able to assist me?
I’m having trouble updating plex manually, can u walk me through it
Download the Plex QPKG from their website, login to the NAS webUI, go to the App Center, click on the icon at the top right with the "+" symbol for "Install", choose the "Install Manually" option. You can then browse to the QPKG you downloaded to your computer and click on "Install". Will take about a minute and then Plex will have been updated to the latest version.
Informative video, but i have a question: My setup is TS-453E with 2 HDD drives on RAID1, but it's very noisy with drive noises even when not used. How can i make it less noisy? Would it be better and minimize noise when using NVMe for cache acceleration. Or using NVMe as storage pool and system volume?
If you go into Control Panel and Hardware, you can choose to allow the drives to sleep when idle. Please note that there are a few things that might make them never go "idle", things like media servers constantly looking for media or CCTV recording may prevent this from happening. Alternatively you can set a power timer in the NAS and make it shut down at say 11pm and wake back up at 6am, or whatever times suit your needs. You can override the power on time by just tapping the power button on the NAS or using Wake-on-LAN, it will still shut down again at the next scheduled shut down event.
Password defined for encryption in Web interface is proprietary. It is not the standard Linux LUKS one. Why ? I did format & encrypt my external drive on QNAP but I can't read this drive on Linux . I don't see a reason for that.
What app is that that you are working from, and where do I download it from? I just purchased a QNAP TR004 DAS, and I'm learning how to use it through many tutorials. Newbie here to the backup world. Any advice is helpful. Thank you.
The TR-004 is a direct attached storage device and not a NAS, only the NAS would have these extra features.
Very informative👍, but seems, the security link doesn't work. In your case 10.10.0.241:8081/, can you demonstrate by click on it?
The IP 10.10.0.241 is in my LAN, for your LAN it would be a different IP, I cannot tell you what this would be unfortunately.
Hi. Thank you for the guide. I have a TS-262 I have started with a 2Tb SSD-drive and thin volumes. I have made a storage pool with 7 volumes. I want to mirror my drive (Raid1), so I have installed a 2Tb HDD-drive (Storage Pool 2) with 1. thin volume. When I come to the part (1:46 / 7:51) where I should "Manage" my Storage Pool, The "Manage" button is grey and not available? So I don't get the option to "Migrate Raid Group". Do you have ideas to how I can get further?
To migrate the RAID group you need to have a free drive... it sounds like the second drive you installed is already being used for Storage Pool 2 so it cannot be used. Ideally the drives in a RAID1 would be the same type of drive too, as drive1 is SSD it would be recommended to have drive2 as an SSD as well.
Hi what would be the size of the snapshot? How to view the size of it? Thanks
You can view the snapshot by managing the storage pool which the volume that is using snapshots is contained. The size will depend on the amount of data that has changed since the oldest snapshot, changes include modifications and deletions. New data added does not get put in the snapshot itself, but would be accounted for if you were replication the snapshots (Snapshot Replication/SnapSync) to another NAS.
Ok thanks. Can we view the size in the properties of a snapshot of either added or deleted? And what would be the size of the first snapshot?
"Added" data is not in the snapshot. It's still in the NAS volume so no need for it to be in the snapshot. Only data that has changed (this includes deletions) will be in the snapshot. First snapshot is essentially zero... but the second snapshot will be the size of whatever changes were made between the 1st and 2nd snapshot. I have about 20TB on my NAS, I keep snapshots for 30 days, my snapshot size is only around 120GB, which is the changes/deletions I have made in those 30 days. This size is the same, no matter if I put 1TB of new data or 5TB of new data.
Thanks for your lovely explanation So you mean to say whatever the data is added that won't taken by snapshot Rather Than the deleted data only taken in snapshot Also could please share your knowledge on incremental snapshot?
Thanks I have got the clarification from your explanation
great video Craig thanks for sharing!
Please add UPS battery percentage as rule to shutdown. Using just minutes is not the best option. (other manufacturers have percentage option also)
x2
Great suggestion, I will put the request in with the Product Management team.
I tried this, TS431, and new disk showed as healthy, but RAID did not rebuild
I would recommend raising a support ticket with our Helpdesk via the Helpdesk app on the NAS. The logs it will submit with the ticket will give them the reason why it was not seen as a suitable disk for rebuild.
What are the chances QuTS hero will someday be supported on a TS-453D? it also rocks a Quad core intel processer.
As the maximum RAM on that CPU, as recommended by Intel, is 8GB - we do not plan to implement QuTS hero on this NAS.
Great video! Question - I can only assume that I must have pushed "Enable Configuration reset switch" somehow, because the 3 and 10 rest button hold doesn't do anything? My Qfinder finds my other QNAPs on the network, but not my TS-432XU-RP. Mine was on a fixed IP and using a 10gbps fiber SFP connection (yes I have tried switching fiber cables and SFP modals). It worked flawlessly for a couple years, then suddenly Qfinder didn't see it and Qsync stopped working. I am a Network admin, so I have checked network setting...nothing shows on network as connected and getting an IP address, although QNAP shows network activity lights blinking (on front and back of the unit). I have also changed the network switch it is connected to. I have switched back to cable RJ45 and still nothing and QNAP shows network activity light blinking. I have not made any config changes over the past year, other than FW updates. Any ideas?
I would recommend raising a support ticket with our Helpdesk, they will have a couple of troubleshooting steps for you to try to see if they can diagnose what has happened and get it back online.
As this video is 3 years old, Is it currently possible to re-install or tranfer the System Pool on an SSD after you have already installed it on a regular HDD?
Unfortunately not, best way would be to copy your data off the NAS, factory reset it and start again but this time choosing the first pool to be on, ideally, 2 x SSD's in RAID1 minimum. After that is done, create the storage on the HDD's for your data and copy the data back.
@@QNAPUK Thank you. As I only have 1 NVME SSD at the moment, can I follow your suggestion (without adding Raid1 of course) and then add the 2nd NVME SSD later and upgrade to Raid 1? OR do I have to start with 2 NVME SSDs in Raid 1.
I would recommend waiting until you have 2 x SSD for RAID1. If that 1 SSD fails your NAS will go down... better to have it on redundant HDD's than a non-redundant SSD.
@@QNAPUK Thank you 🙏🏽
I have TS464 nas installed with quts hero os. I installed 1 TB mirrored NVME. When I setup the mirrored NVME as Read Cache / write zil cache it only allocate 10GB of storage to the write zil cache . Is it by design? Can I increase the Size of Write zil cache?
You cannot change the size of the ZIL, it's very small... 10GB is usually enough even with a lot of data/files. Customers that use our largest solutions with 30-bay head units and lots of expansions still wouldn't fill the 10GB in most cases. The data stored in the ZIL is very small.
How about using 1 ethernet port and a TB3 connection? Will it add the band of both?
SMB multichannel only allows for combining the Ethernet ports of the same speed and type on a device. For example, 10GbE+10GbE.
I purchased my SSD after I already setup the System Pool. So, how can I now transfer the System Pool to the SDD?
Unfortunately it cannot be transferred. Only way would be to really copy your data off the NAS and set it up again choosing the SSD's as the first Pool. Ideally it will be 2 x SSD's in RAID1 at least.
My telephone won't even scan the QR-code. It just won't do it. Not with the QNAP authenticator nor the Google Authenticator. I can't be the only one, can I?
Simply brilliant video, explained it better than anything else I have read or seen.
Thanks!
This app is awesome, we are using the Premium version.
How can I migrate from RAID 0 to RAID 5?
Unfortunately not possible, we support RAID migration from Single drive to RAID1, RAID1 to RAID5 and then finally RAID5 to RAID6.
Is it strictly 2 connections to both NAS and Client? We have a Qnap NAS with 4x 2.5GbE and 2x 10GbE and we have 8 clients all connected to a 10GbE switch. Right now we use port trunking on the 2x 10GbE connections on the NAS. But if all 8 clients are using their bandwidth it would be great if I could have all connections on the NAS active and the data just flows from whatever port is the fastest for the individual clients based on the amount of traffic going on... Am I basically just asking if you can coonnect e.g. 6x ethernet ports from a NAS to a 10GbE switch and have all connections used to their fullest extent?
SMB multichannel only allows for combining the Ethernet ports of the same speed and type on a device. For example, 10GbE+10GbE. SMB multichannel uses the same number of Ethernet ports across devices, which means if the NAS has 2 x 10GbE, you would need 2 x Ethernet connections on the clients to use it.
I have a TS-453A and I have tried the 10 second reset twice. It gives the beeps at 3 second adn 10 seconds interval but it does not allow me to login using the admin/admin or admin/<macaddress> method. It keeps complaining incorrect login details. also to note that after the reset that I have down twice, the NAS name and macaddress remains the same against what you state in your video that post reset it will reset the NAS name. How do I resolve this issue?
Depending on the firmware you are on when attempting the reset, the password may be different. If you are on 5.2.0 or higher then this is the default password: The Cloud Key of your device in uppercase letters and without any special characters. For example, if the Cloud Key is Q1234-5678, the password is Q12345678
Unable to backup selected folders, can only backup entire drives. Am I missing something?
I'm getting a TS264 that will have 16Gb RAM and 12Tb Ironwolf Pro HDDs in RAID 1. Can I install the system pool (OS?) (I was planning on QuTS hero) on an NVMe M.2 SSD with Heatsink in slot 1 with a TPU in NVME slot 2 rather than installing it in Raid 1 on two NVME M.2 SSDs?
It will let you do it, sure... but it is not recommended. The System Pool ideally will be on 2 x SSD's in RAID1 at least. If you get a drive failure on the System Pool your NAS will be offline with a single drive until you replace and set the NAS backup again.
Exactly what i wanted to know. And I love that it's so easy to add more storage to a volume. But it's not a "real" raid1 then isn't it? afaik addind a 3rd drive to Raid1 just mirrors it as well.. IDK just happy it's so easy. Great Video, thanks
If you add a 3rd drive into a 2 drive RAID1 setup then it will normally be migrated to RAID5.
Great instructions. My PC crapped out a couple of years ago. Never had a chance to connect my Qnap to a network. I just purchased a Mac Mini M4 and the first thing on my mind was to access around 2tb worth of photos and videos on my TS231P. With your instructions I managed to do a direct cable connection to the NAS. I can access my 20 years worth of photos. The only thing that is stumping me is how to create an icon on my desktop to have quick access to the data. I have ordered a 4tb external SSD as my working drive, to which I’m planning to copy all my NAS files.
Try right clicking on the shared folder and choosing to create a shortcut when looking at it on the network.
I have the 431x2 and sadly the QTS filesystem has serious problems finding bit rod (I tested it myself). I cannot trust the NAS. Sadly no QuTS for that NAS 😢
I'm not really sure what the use case for this would be - especially since most functions are behind a pay license? Sure you can backup your online email accounts into the one spot, but thats sort of why I have an online account for stuff I don't intend on keeping. The stuff I do gets sent to a work + personal email accounts and managed in Thunderbird on a laptop. Thunderbird can import online accounts and emails, do backup and restore of emails. Those can then be backed up with a regular backup routine to your NAS. I can't see myself logging in to my QNAP remotely to read email when I can do that already with an online account? I just don't see the point. But you explained it much better than some of the other QNAP tutorials.
It would seem most use it to get around firewall issues in certain places. I believe in China they block access to Google services, this allows you to still access things like your GMail when there as you are accessing the NAS instead of Google directly. Obviously only works if the NAS is not in the country where the services are blocked though.
@@QNAPUK It still seems like a niche market for it considering most users will have their NAS at home with them and generally wouldn't be running it in a remote part of the world (unless you were overseas in China for work). But thanks for clarifying the use case.
How do I check the ip address for each port.. ?
why on earth it is not possible to sedit Allowed IPs of a peers?!?!?! why prevent to use site2site connections!?!?!?
You can choose which IP a peer has. Site to site works great.
@@QNAPUK it is not possible - I can send you a screen shot of latest QTS on my TS-453 and field is not editable, just do it editable, I manually edited /mnt/HDst A_ROOT/.config/qvpn/wireguard/server_peers.conf and it works now
@@QNAPUK I am ot talking about peer IP, I am talking about ALLOWED IPs in server_ppers.cong it is a allow_ip and allow_ip_mask variables
Thunderbolt 4 should be 40 gbps. Why so slow?
Hello. although I made the settings in the video exactly, it takes backup very slowly, 3 5 mb per second, where could I be making a mistake
Qnap's in dubai media city
why is my snapshot storage at 7TB, using up a lot of space even though it says there is only 2 snapshots
The snapshot size will be the data that has been modified (changed/deleted) since the oldest snapshot. If you have had a tidy up on the NAS and got rid of a lot of data... it would make your snapshot usage quite high.
super weird it doesnt come as a 19" unit - or at least a kit to rack it. For its target market, I would assume most customers would rack it in their existing network rack. A big oversigth.
Thanks for the feedback, i'll pass this on to the product management.
I want to use my QNAP solely for one of my backup systems for 3 separate PCs. I plan on setting up 4 3 TB drives in a RAID 5 configuration giving me about 9b TB of storage with a single disk failure acceptance. I have been using Macrium Reflect to create incremental backups of each PC and its data with a full backup every so often. So, I am trying to understand whether or not, snapshots are of any use to me?
Snapshots would protect you from Ransomware so can still be of some use... Macrium Reflect is taking care of backing up your data, snapshots would protect you against the data being attacked on the NAS for any reason.
can io use a pcie external sas card to add a jbod to it ?
You can use our TL-D800S via the PCIe slots of you wish, it comes with a PCIe card that gives external SAS ports to use a SATA connection across to the 8-bay expansion.
It would be more useful to show how to make it accessible from the web.
Really just a single port forward through to the web server.
Hello, I have a QNAP TS-233 model. I can't install Netbak on PCs, it requires HDP 2.0. There is no such application in the QNAP App Market. What should I do?
Unfortunately our HDP software requires an Intel or an AMD CPU in the NAS to be installed.
Can you connect this directly to PC ?
Yes you can use it with a PC, on the product page for this device we have a subheading "For NAS" as well as one "For PC/Server", it will give you all the detail and how you can use it there.
No mention of which QNAP is compatible , what software and hardware requirements. No mention if you want to run the NAS with routing how many NICs required.
I got these "MTFDKBZ3T8TFR-1BC1ZABYY Data Center 7450 PRO" from QNAP compatibility list but can't seems to fit in the casing. I tried both ways with adapter and removing but the Micron 7450 SSD doesn't align. DO you know if theres anyway i can install these.
That SSD is not on the compatibility list for the TBS-h574TX, the largest Micron on the list is 960GB and these are 3.84TB. The Exascend EXPE4M3840GB is the only 3.84TB M.2 NVMe SSD on the list for this NAS.
Thanks for sharing, but frankly what logic does having ONLY USB type A does in a NAS like the QNAP TS-H1290FX-7302P has? do we really want to take hours for a incremental or days for the full backup? Same for any of the high capacity cases.
USB-A or USB-C does not describe speed... they both run at the same speed. The TS-h1290FX has 3 x USB 3.2 Gen1 ports... this is 5Gbps. You can also get USB-A in USB 3.2 Gen2 which is 10Gbps, the port style has nothing to do with the speed. But 5Gbps is the maximum on this NAS for USB, regardless of port style. We decided to dedicate the PCIe bandwidth to the drive bays and PCIe slots in the rear rather than making the USB faster, if we had done 1 less PCIe slot or perhaps limited them to a lower speed we could have made the USB faster but it is more useful, in our opinion, to have faster/more PCIe slots.
