- In order to be able to do this you will need the below minimum requirements.
Latest version of PLEX - Download from www.plex.tv/me...
Latest version of QTS or QuTS Hero - Download from www.qnap.com/e...
Latest version of NVIDIA Drivers for QNAP NAS - Download from the App Centre on your QNAP NAS.
A separate GPU installed in your NAS that is compatible with the model you're using.
Simply install Plex Media Server from the QNAP App Center and your NAS is ready to go. Plex Media Server allows you to maintain local collections of movies, videos, photos, and music on your NAS, and streams them from Plex to various devices such as phones, tablets, and TVs via media streaming devices (including DLNA®, Roku®, Amazon Fire TV® and Google Chromecast™).
QNAP NAS is built for running 24/7 and uses significantly less power than most desktop PCs. With a QNAP NAS you can enjoy a stable network environment for Plex to provide continuous multimedia streaming and access to media anytime and anywhere.
Transcoding is crucial for enjoying smooth media playback. It works by converting media files to suitable resolutions and bitrates based on your device’s capabilities and Internet connection. Plex automatically transcodes your media to ensure smooth playback on different media players and devices.
Hardware-accelerated transcoding utilizes dedicated hardware capabilities of a supported CPU or GPU to perform transcoding/conversion. NAS that support graphics cards can greatly benefit from hardware-accelerated transcoding. A Plex Pass account is required for hardware-accelerated streaming.

Nice one Craig! 😊
mines not switching, i rebooted the computer and my 1080ti still takes all the load. sucks. i wanna game and use the uhd 770 for transcodes
Might be a question for the Plex Forums, this is a feature within their software that they develop, perhaps they are working on a fix for it?
This is great. Love it
Thanks for the video. It would be great if you can make another video comparing your internal nas gpu and the nvidia gpu when using the transcoding option of plex. Thanks
Just Google GTX1050Ti vs Intel UHD 770, plenty of benchmark sites have comparisons. The Nvidia wins on everything except power consumption.
@@QNAPUK thanks :)
Well, followed this guide, but my GPU doesn't show up in the selection box of the Plex server setting ???
The only setting on the QNAP that you need to do is to make sure the PCIe GPU is set in QTS mode... this makes sure all the appropriate Nvidia drivers are installed and active for Plex to pick it up. If Plex isn't finding it then maybe someone over on the Plex forums can offer some advice, we don't make that software so not sure on the inner workings of this new feautre.
@@QNAPUK Doesn't work - Nvidia driver installed - GPU set to QTS - Plex Server does not show GPU ??? (Using TVS-1282)
@@DanElgaard9 I have the same problem sadly. TS-873A, QUTS Hero. Rebooted and such. Card is listed in hardware, is in QTS mode, but Plex won't see it. Re-install plex next, failing that moved Plex elsewhere again.
Reboot, uninstalled plex, reinstalled plex and now showing
If you leave it on auto, does plex automatically switch between using either device for hw transcoding when 1 device is maxed out for example?
I believe it is only 1 at a time.
I have a tvs-863. What gpu can i add?
As the CPU has onboard graphics we did not test additional graphics options in the PCIe slots with this NAS, we have only recently started to do that with the newer NAS.
