    Thanks Craig, a useful addition that highlights the free software upgrades us QNAP users receive.

    Hi Craig, Can you do a video on how to update a container to the latest version? For example when there is a pihole update. thanks

    • @QNAPUK
      @QNAPUK  Год назад

      You cannot really do it with this implementation, it's basically install a new container so it has the latest version. Just make sure to kill the first container running Pi-Hole so you can use the same IP for the new one.

      This is a severe limitation of the QNAP and needs to be addressed.

      u just need to configure a shared Folder, so your settings and logs dont get lost, when recreating the Container in the newer Version

    I'm not sure why I can't deploy any containers. It only shows errors like the one below:
    Failed to create container "apache". Error message: failed to create container: failed to create docker client: Error response from daemon: no such image: bitnami/apache:latest: No such image: bitnami/apache:latest

    Thanks for the video, Would you mind release a video tutorial or share a direction where to find about how to get direct access to the volumes attached to the containers (currently permission is not be able to change, not be able to access from windows machine). Trying to run a server, but it's hard to get access to change the server files. Cheers!

    Unfortunately, it turns out that the Pihole uses a virtual switch, I wanted to connect my Mac mini to the second port of my TS464 with a USB 2.5 GB adapter, but that is not possible now. What is also striking is that you unfortunately cannot switch from DHCP to static on a TV streamer and therefore cannot use your Pi hole as DNS (Formular z10).

    How can a custom file mapped into the container or a volume added to a container? The "Volumes" menu item has been skipped totally in this tutorial!

    Hi, a week a go my Qnap Tvs-h674 died, It almost fire up, a few parts started smoking, I did file the ticket and now it is at the Qnap service center in California trying to figure it out what happened, unfortunately this nas was almost new, I did bought it on last November 2022, and is being used for only 10 hours at day, hopefully it will be a defective motherboard or capacitors.

      Very unusual, been at QNAP in 10 years and never heard of this, even had a customer with a rack unit plugged into an unprotected mains power socket when a lightning strike hit the building... replaced the PSU and it worked great for another 3 years until they upgraded to something faster.

      Which NAS do you have?

  • @Reiner030
    @Reiner030 Год назад +1

    There seems still no IPv6 support on Docker on QNAP while it's meanwhile a very basic and important task because all smartphones and also Windows and MacOS ( and Linus clearly, too) tries to use IPv6 as default access method .
    Especially when providers like Vodafohe are throwing out customers from getting IP4 addresses letting only a CG-NAT as dirty fakkvack option...

    • @QNAPUK
      @QNAPUK  Год назад

      If there is a Docker container for it then you should be able to, I believe TPOT is advised to be used with a GPU if you can... so if you have a PCIe GPU that is compatible with the NAS, you can pass it through to the Container to have it work better.

    How to update containers quickly and easily when new versions are released please

    • @QNAPUK
      @QNAPUK  Год назад +1

      You cannot update them with this implementation, you could try running a Linux VM in Virtualisation Station instead and run Pi-Hole on that if you wanted to update it more often. But it will consume more resources doing that compared to a container.

      @QNAPUK How can I add the volumes to store the data between container upgrades
      volumes:
      - './etc-pihole:/etc/pihole'
      - './etc-dnsmasq.d:/etc/dnsmasq.d'
      I this in the section storage/storage mapping? Otherwise the docker implementation in container station is useless!

      @@QNAPUKor you can setupbsn Ubunto or Debia LXD Vontainercsetting up pihole with similar small overhead/ used ressources...
      There are several howtos in the wild for it...

      you just need to configure a shared Folder, so your Settings an logs dont get lost, when u recreate the new Image.

    I'm a VM and Container newbie. I'm curious about Ubuntu Linux Station. If this installs Linux as a Virtual Machine, why does it require Container Station ?

    • @QNAPUK
      @QNAPUK  Год назад

      Ubuntu Linux Station is an Ubuntu Linux operating system installation tool for your QNAP device. Integrated with Linux containers, it helps you to easily download and install lightweight fully-virtualised Linux OS images.

    It's a shame that you can't use the pihole -up command 😞

    • @QNAPUK
      @QNAPUK  Год назад +1

      Nature of a container unfortunately. You can always install a copy of Linux in Virtualisation Station instead if you wish and then add Pi-Hole to that. But it will consume more resources from the NAS than a container would.

    BE AWRE OF RISK OF BRICKING your NAS by this guide! I followed the instructions and almost got my NAS bricked! The moment I created the pi-hole container, I lost connection to my NAS -- web console and file server, basically the IP of my NAS is unreachable. I spent hours to figure out why: when you create the container using bridge network, QNAP will automatically create a Virtual Switch attached to you ethernet interface/adapter. And if your firewall has strict policy to only allow connection from the ethernet adapter, that rule will ridiculously become nonfunctional, making your NAS inaccessible from your LAN. I had to to connect a monitor to the NAS to be able to rescue it. All I can say is QNAP makes really sh*tty software!

      Tried to install Pihole as per this video guide and my NAS too, I am having problems.
      The container where Pihole is installed froze, I am unable to delete it so I tried to stop container station and now is in a permanent state of stopping.
      The NAS is stuck with the rebooting, please wait window as I am hoping a reboot will help so I can remove container station.

      Had to force shut down the NAS, pulled out all drives, rebooted just fine, shut down properly this time, installed drives again and now it is stuck on the loading screen. If I try and refresh the page, it shows the timed out page.
      I wish I hadn’t tried to install PiHole now.
      Is there an issue with one of the drives now or just the drive that the container/ PiHole is on?
      Any help/advice to get it back up and running would be greatly appreciated.
