Are you mainly adjusting the gate valve when the socks clog up? That may cause different water levels above on water intake? I have the same problem but on my reefmat when the filter roll starts to clog right before it hits the sensor to turn the roll it makes my weir either trickle in or clog up
@@HeftyReefs I don’t really touch the gate valve much anymore. I have found I get the most stability just making small adjustments to my return pump output. Eventually the pump will get dirty enough where stability goes out the door and have to swap and clean.
Any updates?
@@franklintrujillo9853 thanks for asking! Yea, I’ve been needing to get a video up. I hope next week. Work has just been crazy since September.
I'm just getting a marine tank did u buy the rocks like that or did u make them like that as I want over hanging shelfs like u have
@@bangersnmash2589 I bought dry Marco rock, glued and cemented the two structures together, then once I got the tank wet, I bought some real live Tampa bay saltwater rubble to seed the tank.
That’s the truth you are speaking especially being super forgiving . I have been using MH since 1995 and never once I burn my Corals even if the corals are not at their best . It heals quickly and repair amazingly. I bought 40 PCs of the 10K bulbs of 250watts because I want to reef out till I am 80 years olds even if they phase out someday soon . Great video!
Its a very common practice in the garden to trim back unhealthy growth. This usually fixes the issue and prevents further plant damage, and has the added benefit of spurring new growth from stress. Clearly corals respond similarly to stress.
Is there somewhere I can see a list of all the equipment you're using?

NIce tank. How do you keep the sump clean with a light there promoting algae growth all over the walls?
@@HaneezHaroon I keep those lights as low as possible to the water surface to prevent light bleed in other areas and algae, but yes, there is additional maintenance and periodic additional cleaning required when running a lighted fuge.
Great video! I agree with all that was said about MH driven systems. I've been in this hobby for roughly 25 years and have ran every lighting system on the market throughout those years. I'm currently running full LED's on my 150 gallon and 25 gallon SPS dominant systems (Radions and AI Hydras). Don't get me wrong, LED's are pretty amazing at growing corals and have come quite a long way from back in the days, but it's lacking that something...that "pop" that MH bulbs just have and is difficult to replicate (although Kessils do come close). I just dug out some old 250 and 400 watt Radium setups I had stored away in my crawl space. I'm planning on running one of these over a 55 gallon that's been sitting empty for quite a few years. I've been eyeing that Giesemann Spectra 24" fixture but can seem to be able to source it from the US. I might just go with a hydroponic reflector/fixture. Quick question, what kind of brackets did you use to mount the LED bars to your Giesemann fixture?
Thanks! FYI, every month or two on reef2reef I see a used spectra come up for sale there. Not sure you are a forum person, but just an idea. I think you could snag one if you keep an eye on the for sale section and are a little patient. In fact, I mostly see the 24 inch model pop up there. For the led bars, I just used the default brackets that came with the orphek bars. I didn't have to drill into the fixture or anything, just loosened a screw on the vented side covers and hooked it up. Basically, plug and play...got lucky I suppose!
Nice corals and growth. Having a mixed reef really lets you see how slow Acropora grow lol. I only have a few but they are growing in well. Love the video.
Hey there, thanks so much for the kind feedback! Appreciate you tuning in!

Probe may be bad. How old is it? I have to replace mine every 1-2 years it seems.
Nice setup! Gonna try kalk some day. Do you stir it at all, or mix once and use until exhausted then repeat?
@@FriendM2010 when I used it, I would mix it up real well for a few minutes, then let it settle for a while before feeding in the dosing line.
Are those 20000K MH bulbs?
@@michaelho1671 yep, 20k radiums
Total noob question. I know that you used 90 elbows to connect the hoses to the uv steralizer, but what did you use to get the elbows to connect to the uvateralizers. Can you give me a list of what you used to plumb it in?
Hi there, you can buy the unit with either a 2" inlet/outlet or a 3/4" inlet/outlet. Mine has the 3/4" inlet/outlet and so I bought a couple 3/4” Schedule 80 90° Elbow Barb x Male Thread. There are nylon ones at home depot, but most said those may fail after time, so ordered the elbows off of bulk reef supply.
What do the threaded barbs screw into though? What did you use for that piece?
@@raymondhorton8480 they are bushings with female threads so you can screw in the male thread elbows. Go to this link and look at the last picture. That should help - cittapet.com/product/aqua-ultraviolet-25-watt-3-4%E2%80%B3-white-classic-uv-sterilizer/

I really struggled to get my corals to grow with led until i added some t5's and then they just took off
@@mike-jn1if yea, same experience over here. LEDs work and grow corals just fine, but T5s just seem to push the growth quite a bit faster in my experience.
Why are so many of them leaking that is really discouraging to me a all in one system seem very nice but with all the leaks am scared of them
Yea I agree; makes me nervous…luckily I haven’t heard of any of the new generation tanks leaking yet, but time will tell…
Liked it. Very nice video. Such an honest video i can say
What type of ballasts do you run your Mh ? looks awesome!
Hey, thanks for the kind feedback! I am running hamilton m80 ballasts. You can't buy them new anymore, but picked them up on ebay. You can also run electronic ballasts, reefbrite sells them. They will fire the radium bulbs just fine, but will under drive them, so may be a little bluer and 15% less PAR. Hope that is helpful.
I was always tempted to try metal halide as I think LED is over hyped but it seemed like the Radium bulbs were a thing of the past and surely the most popular bulb which put me off of them. Now I see that Aquarium Specialty is stocking the Radium 20K bulbs in 250 & 400 watt. Just an FYI for those interested. I might have to look into getting a halide fixture in the future to see what all the hype is about!
Yep, radium bulb production got turned back on, which was very good news. Aqua brite solutions also stocks the radium bulbs and they have their own bulb which many say looks pretty close side by side. I’m just grateful I can keep getting bulbs, and don’t have to compete with polo reef hoarding them all! 😅
You put the nori in a clip and they start eating it. Training complete. They need incentive to eat nori like I need incentive to eat chocolate.
Hate to keep bothering ya . But would you please tell me about your led strip lights 😊
No problem. They are Orphek or3 blue plus led bars. I am pretty happy with them. I’ve ran reefbrites as well and those were great too. Orpheks are a little cheaper…we’ll see if they last as long.
@@zburnreefing Thank you !
Nice 😊 . What T 5. Bulbs to run ?
@@lovermansmith9082 thanks! I’m running 3 blue plus and one purple plus by ATI. I threw in that purple to help draw out the reds and pinks that the halide misses.
@zburnreefing Thanks ! I want to run the 250 watt radium mh on my 1st tank . 5 hours a day on them sounds good for keeping tank temp down . Thanks for your expertise on T 5 s . The best of all worlds . I figure the biggest tank I could gets with one 250 watt radium is 36" x 36 " 😊
Great points 👏👌🙌🤙
I last had MH back in 2011. 500W. The energy bill was crippling. In summer, the chiller ran constantly and I still needed a fan. Fan increased evap so I was refilling the ATO every three days. On a 3x2x2 tank. I had the MH on the tank while my first gen Vertex Illumina was in the shop for a failed LED module. That was a nice fitting but so glitchy.
Where can I get a Geisemann
You can order them directly here, but they ship from overseas: shop.giesemann.de/epages/Giesemann-Aquaristik.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Giesemann-Aquaristik/Products/20.480.000.....or if patient and watch used selling sections of forums, you can sometimes grab one (I got my current one used off reef2reef).
The shimmer is the absolute best with the halide.
100% agree
Great explanation and argument for MH. Unrelated observation but your Reefbrite looking LED strips appear to be aimed at an awkward angle. They look over-angled and pointed at the opposite glass. Probably getting some excellent reflection off that glass and maybe it's intentional, but I've always tried aiming my led strips towards the coral.
Thanks for sharing your insights and observations. I’ll take a look at the angle tonight after work and see if it needs a little tweaking for sure!
Do you keep high ish nutrients for such high par?
I have difficulty with elevating nutrients. Nitrates and phosphates are always low when testing. I do feed heavy and nutrient export is just a skimmer. The tank just seems to process the nutrients. No gfo, no carbon, no nopox, etc…so I would certainly classify my system as not low nutrient.
I miss watching my radiums fire up :(
@@steevareno2002 can you go back to them? Or do the pros of LEDs outweigh the cons of metal halide for you?
@@zburnreefing my t5/led are pretty much in place now but it is tempting. I do like the look of the giesemann fixture!
Love the video. From one halide user to another, I concur! FYI the aqua bright solutions bulb looks identical to radiums. I have them running side by side and can't tell the difference.
@@jackson6745 that’s great to know, my next order, I’ll give those aqua bright solution bulbs a try! Hope your corals are hanging in there during the AEFW dip regimen…so darn frustrating.
How did you mount that Acropora on the overflow box? Fantastic idea! I’d like to do something like that.
Just a little super glue is usually enough to get it to hold a couple weeks…but if the coral isn’t already puddling out, it can be a little challenging as it needs to encrust quickly, before glue fails. Some folks have also done it with magnet frag plugs, but the less magnets in the system probably the better.
So 6 hours of MH running? How about the t5 and led? 12? 10 t5 12 led?
Metal halides are on for 5 hours and T5s for 10 hours. LEDs just a few hours as they turn on when T5s do, but I don’t run them at the same time the halides are on. Hope that helps!
The reef is amazing!!
