A picture says more than a thousand words. I stick to that!
Pure photography aiming to inspire you - without talking.
I visually show the process that leads to the creation of a photograph and my assessment of the result: delete, keep, add to portfolio or print and hang up?
Along the way, you can enjoy the beauty (or ugliness) of our man-made and natural world and hopefully draw motivation and inspiration for your own photography.
Be it architecture photography, street photography, landscape photography or abstract photography - inspiration is everywhere and opportunities are endless.

Dune Landscape Photography
Oh how I am attracted to the sea and its coastal landscapes as a resident of a landlocked country!
And this is by no means limited to landscape photography.
The vastness of the sky, the wind caressing the dune grass, the salty taste in the air - food for the soul of a person and landscape photographer.
As is so often the case when I venture into landscape photography, the photographic results are rather mixed, but that doesn't bother me. Because my time in the dunes still echoes in my heart and the sweet longing for the sea is renewed.
Of course I would like to practise landscape photography by the sea more often, because the photographic potential is huge, but it is what it is and I try to ...

Harbor Buildings Fine Art Architecture Photography

An elegant wooden building and an industrial complex in Esbjerg harbor are both wonderful subjects for fine art architectural photography. Esbjerg's Maritime Center, developed by Snøhetta and WERK Arkitekter, provides a maritime social hub and architectural landmark for the seaport town on the Danish west coast. The building design is inspired by the geometry and craftmanship of boats, paying h...
Built Like a Prison! Fine Art Architecture Photography

Can architecture be uninviting but still photogenic? As far as this building is concerned, definitely yes! The storage center for Swiss cultural artifacts offers a plethora of opportunities for architecture photography. The heart of the abstract photographer also jumps at the sight of these lovely textured rusty iron facades. Behind barbed wire fences and massive iron plates, over 800,000 items...
Hiking to do Landscape, Architecture and Astro Photography

Is wanting everything too much? I jumped from landscape photography to architecture photography and back again, and to round things off I also tried my hand at astrophotography. In theory, a photographic paradise for me, you might think. On location however, I couldn't really focus on any of the genres. In any case, it was a wonderful hike to an amazing photo location. Unfortunately, word has a...
Macro Photography Wide Open

Forget deep depth of field macro photography , focus stacking and the like but embrace the sensual quality of out of focus blur! Macro photography with a fully open aperture is a lot of fun and allows for very creative images. It also makes flash-free handheld photography a little easier thanks to faster shutter speeds. Focus peaking is a real blessing for this type of photography - or macro ph...
Semi-Legal Sneaking in for Fine Art Architecture Photography

Did I go too far in intruding into this building to get the architecture shots I wanted? I was magically drawn to this wonderful spiral staircase and I really wanted to see it up close, walk around and photograph it extensively. Sometimes you have to cross limits to reach your goal - in architecture photography, fine art photography in general and also in life. As long as no one is harmed, I th...
How Rain Boosts Creativity for Abstract Architecture Photography

Taking out the Ricoh GR II once more for some architecture photography, but this time with a twist! Yes, rain can be annoying for photographers, but also a blessing at the same time, because it covers the city's streets with all those nice puddles. The reflections in the water open up a very different view of the world, especially of architecture in cities. Otherwise clear lines get rippled and...
How I Select Images Worth Printing
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Год назад
Image critique is essential for creative development but also for image selection when it comes to finding out which photographs are print-worthy and which are not. Just as photography as an art form is an entirely personal matter, the same should apply to image selection. It's too easy to be influenced by other photographs and end up making decisions that don't match your personal goals. It is...
Landscape Photography, Macro and Wildlife All In One Day

What a day! A sunny morning for landscape photography, beautiful fly agaric mushrooms for the macro lens and a wildlife encounter with photograph as the icing on the cake. The weather was just as varied and interesting as the photography. Just typical mountain weather. Good thing I had the right clothes with me. In addition, I was finally able to use a vintage lens that was unusable on my old 5...
Autumn in Ticino Switzerland Landscape Photography

In the short period between late fall and winter is the moment when the larches catch fire before they shed their needles. Abandoned Places Photography - Forest Village

A place where you are reminded of an inexorable truth: nothing lasts. Abandoned places in one of the richest countries in the world? Yes, there are! In many remote valleys of the Alps the population has been dwindling for decades and in some to the point where entire villages are abandoned. The young move away, there are too few children, which is why the schools close, which in turn prevents f...
Lost the Lightning Gamble But Won Another One

Landscape photography is often a gamble, probably most of all when trying to capture lightning. The weather forecast predicted several waves of violent thunderstorms and I went out to try my luck (and stretched it by using a 90mm lens to get it close and big). Although I didn't catch any lightning shots, the storm clouds and dramatic sky after the thunderstorm had passed were well worth the eff...
DIY Photo Frame - Handmade at Home Without Machines

See materials and tools used below. Photo frames in A2 format are not so easy to get and if, then usually quite expensive. So I set out to build elegant photo frames from beech wood myself. The frames should be made of wood, elegant, cheap and be built without machines. The hand miter saw is a great help, but it would also work with a miter box (maybe less precise). Since I used textured fine a...

Fine Art Architecture Photography - Brutalism

Fine art architecture photography and brutalism - sounds very disparate, but isn't. I love exposed concrete! The honest rawness of the structures, the clear shapes, textures and patinas are motifs right after my taste for architecture photography. Seemingly endless possible compositions. Landscape Photography and Camping: Autumn in Norway and Northern Lights
There are corner clamps that can hold your corners together square.
Great job!
Thanks!
This is a great video. But I don’t understand the emphasis on the +4mm in the video. Did I miss something? Thanks!
Thank you. Adding 4mm is to give a bit of breathing space (2mm each side) for the print and the backplate.
@ thanks! Appreciate the reply!
As a beginner, I find very useful that you rate every picture in the video. Thank you!
Glad it helps! These are pure personal ratings and as an advice for a beginner, I suggest you try to rate your own work too (if possible without comparing it to any other photographer's images) to find out what you like and what not. Always ask the 'why' - before and during composing, while editing and when assessing your work.
What camera/lens are you using?
Sony A7RIII with adapted vintage lenses. Here the Olympus OM 18mm f/3.5 and Contax Zeiss 100mm f/2.
Schön gmacht!
Danke!
EPSON SC-P800, goof printer
Exactly.
May I learn EPSON printer model , I wish all the best, thanks
Great inspiration, thanks 👍👍👍.
My pleasure!
I know the rule is "measure twice, cut once," but my experience is measure twice and hope for the best while cutting until you get it right, lol. This was the most useful guide for me when you showed where to mark and how to cut. Thank you!
Haha, I know too good what you mean :) Glad the video was helpful! Cheers
No power tools, but, yes, _machines._ Simple machines. But, machines nonetheless.
10/10
Thanks!
I’m surprised you didn’t measure the diagonals to check that the frame was square
Thanks for the hint! I might measure to make sure, but as long as the miters are cut exactly, the frames have always been square so far.
He's cutting at 45° at each corner. 45+45=90. As long as the angle is correct, it has to be square.
good, but you did not show how to ensure frame is square. An important step.
With precisely cut miters, the frame becomes square by itself when glued together.
Great job sir!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Very very nice job here.
Thank you very much!
Hey! Sorry to ask, but what is that elastic tape that you put on the corners to hold the frame while drying?
No problem. There was just a similar question and I'm not sure how this tape is called in English. But after some research I think it's electrical tape.
Excellent video. Re. supplies required, you have "isolation" tape on your list. I am aware that there is such a thing, used for accoustic reduction in structures, but do you mean "insulation" tape? Mistake in translation perhaps, or does "isolation" tape have a property that is especially helpful in photoframe construction?
Thanks! I guess that's a translation mistake then. Maybe it's called duct tape? The main properties are a certain elasticity and that it sticks well to the wood, so there is enough tension to glue the corners together.
I did some research and I think it's called electrical tape, which is more elastic than duct tape.
@thomasrhinow it looked like you were using what’s known as ‘masking tape’ in UK English.
@@22jo222 Not sure - isn't masking tape used to cover stuff before painting, the one I used to fix the MDF back plate to the frame? If so, this is not strong and elastic enough to glue the frame together. Meanwhile I'm pretty sure it's called electrical tape.
@ Ah ok, thanks for the clarification.
Love watching your creative process in the field. Seeing your creative process in post would be just as enjoyable and enlightening. Any chance we''ll see some videos on how you develop your digital images?
Awesome, thank you! I've also been thinking about making a post-processing video, but it's a question of how much time I have available. I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the suggestion!
WHAT A GREAT INSTRUCTION WITHOUT TALKING SINGLE WORD! THANK YOU!
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Love how you put this together Thomas! Stunning location and shots 👏
Thanks! I really enjoyed this shoot.
Flott video!
Thank you :)
Great job!
Thank you!
Hi Tomas! I enjoyed your nature exploration!
Hi! Glad you liked it and let me know. Thanks!
Love the sound design, so immersive! What camera/do you use? I'm not even into photography but your shots on the bike look like they are coming out of the screen! Great job.
Thank you! The Fuji XT4 with XF 16mm/2.8 is my main filming setup, I'm also using the Sony A7RIII for B-roll as well as a range of vintage manual focus lenses (Contax Zeiss and Olympus OM) on both cameras. And always the Rode Stereo VideoMic X microphone, which is responsible for the great sound.
Excellent work 👏👏👏📸
Thank you!
Hi Thomas. Love your "travels" and the images. It's calms the soul. Please keep shooting and sharing! Thanks. Take care
Many thanks for your motivating comment! Will do, as much as time allows :)
🙂🙂🙂 Your images are "food for the soul", Thomas. The wind turbine shot: mood and light. Perspective and dof. Movement. My eyes smiled. The same with the boat scene. Fabulous. Shame on me for living on the coast of New England and feeling like there's limited opportunities. Also, I take note of the occasional detail in how you're teaching (teaching Me anyways) without saying a word. Thank you!
Thanks a lot, I’m glad my work is able to feed your soul 🙂 ! The wind turbine shot is by pretty far my favourite shot of the lot. I would have loved a longer lens than the 100mm I had with me, the image is quite strongly cropped in. But finally an opportunity where the A7RIII's obscenely large files pay off 🙂 Cheers
@thomasrhinow Ahhhhh.... that's helpful about the camera setup. The crop IS fabulous (says this 35mm film shooter 😉). I often try to zoom in to your videos to see what length lens you use. I know my scenario and situation would be different, but it IS an interesting and helpful reference! 😊 Keep up the wonderful storytelling, Thomas. Thanks for the reply !
By all means: so difficult to photographic subject!
Yes, I agree. The most difficult was to transform the mood, these kind of landscapes put me in, into photographs. It didn't turn out like I hoped.
Love your work
Glad you like it and thanks for letting me know!
Nice Thomas, we have the 2nd largest dune range in Europe 3 miles away, I should go! Have a great Christmas and always appreciate the content throughout the year.
Thank you for always stopping by and leaving a nice comment! Really appreciate it! Just 3 miles away? I guess these dunes lost attraction for you over time then, as it (sadly) often happens with nearby places one can visit any time (even just having the possibility is enough not to go)? I wish you a great Christmas too!
@ I will go over the holidays, thanks for the inspiration!
Great!
Thank you!
Hello Thomas, I love the way you make your videos, so unique and creative, bravo! There’s something strangely psychedelic about your work that I cannot tangibly express but thoroughly enjoy through these videos. I hope to see your content always, best wishes.
Hi and thank you very much! Psychedelic? That's interesting. Do you refer to the videos or the photographs?
😊😊😊 The "Tent Drop." Love your videos and how you incorporate your personality, Thomas. Even in some of your shot selections. Different, and spot-on. Your channel is my go to to set my eye, mood and spirit straight. Thank you !
That's so nice to hear! Thank you very much.
Thank you for not talking but showing!
Your welcome 🙂
Your wall paint colour code
Do you have an instagram page?
No instagram, I have my own website at thomasrhinow.com
I do not use focus peaking, I use a high resolution EVF and magnify the image, much better and easier !
Thanks for the tip!
Amazing Thomas, love these type of images. Looked a lovely day out with the camera.
Yes, it was a very enjoyable day. Bicycle, ferry, the sea, the harbor and the relaxed sunset mood. Can't ask for more :) Cheers
Perfect day!
Excellent job! I can never get perfect 45s with machine, nor by hand.
Neither can I - at least not all 4 corners. But I'm satisfied with getting close. If imperfect 45s catch the eye, the image might not be worth framing :)
Thanks Thomas.... Thought provoking as always.
Thank you!
Thank you!!!
Glad you like it, happy frame building!
Going through your videos is a pleasure. And this one is especially pleasant. Including the moment to reflect on a rock. These images are beautiful. I actually said about the frog...bad-a$$ beautiful. - So, as a hobbyist film shooter here, I'm wondering what I could get away with with no focus peaking, and a telephoto lens without macro feature. Keep on doing your thing, Thomas.
Great that you take the time to watch my videos! Without a macro lens, it's best to look for subjects that are slightly larger but still have an interesting out of focus area around them. You can try to compensate for the lack of focus peaking by shooting in burst mode and moving very slightly forwards or backwards while the camera is firing - however that's not really budget friendly when shooting film. Another way is to use a tripod and shoot non-moving subjects, so you have time to set focus.
@@thomasrhinow Thank you for the thoughtful reply, Thomas ! I Definitely need to get over my reluctance to carry a tripod. And that is a great point about the focus area around the subject. After watching this video, I did go on a little macro video mission. Fortunately I was able to contain myself and not make any hasty purchases! :) Although, perhaps some extension tubes for a vintage 50mm I use are in mind. :) Either way... your videos are food for the mind and soul and I will probably watch this one several times. Carry on, Thomas !
that is inspiring Thomas, love your work. thanks for this Video
Thank you very much, I'm glad you like it!
Brilliant. Love it. Great eye and nice images. Your b-roll really tells us your story. Lot of work!
Thank you very much Rolf, I am glad you like it!
Who would have thought I would be lost and gaze at a 3-inch metal hook on hey dumpster. 😁 Fabulous eye there. And those planets. Awesome. I'm glad to have stumbled on your channel by my new found interest in brutalism. But you've got more!
Haha, yeah the world can be amazing with a close look and a bit of imagination :) Glad you like what you found here!
Great one! Many keepers for sure, this site is totally worth another visit, so many geometric shapes! I was constantly seeing alternative framings and alternative lens lengths!
Totally agree! Too bad the place is 1000km from where I live, so a revisit won't be soon - if at all.
Well the more time it passes the more interesting a revisit would be than!
Hello Thomas, your videos just keep on getting better and I love the photos. The ones that you chose to print and hang, were nothing less than superb.
Glad you like it! I have hope I can fix my printer soon - can't wait to start the new wall with those prints.
