Semi-Legal Sneaking in for Fine Art Architecture Photography

  • Did I go too far in intruding into this building to get the architecture shots I wanted? I was magically drawn to this wonderful spiral staircase and I really wanted to see it up close, walk around and photograph it extensively.
    Sometimes you have to cross limits to reach your goal - in architecture photography, fine art photography in general and also in life. As long as no one is harmed, I think that's ok.
    This building was almost completed and already partially occupied, including by EM2N Architects, who designed this special architecture.
    Although the harsh winter light was perfect to go for black and white photography, I'm only half satisfied with the resulting images. I was hoping for better shots of this awesome spiral staircase - you know, fine art architectural photography that touches me.
    Maybe I should go again and ask for official permission, so that I'm less stressed and can focus 100% on my photography without fear of being caught on this rather exposed spiral staircase.
    Thanks for watching!

      I would like to get in portfolio the very first pic, it's more si-fi looking like, more futuristic, I think.

    Most cases they'll claim it's for YOUR SAFETY, even tho no one is harmed. Glad to know I'm not the only hooligan in Architectural Photography. I almost broke my face once climbing over a 6 foot wall. It was great. There was a car coming so I had to do it quickly. I'm too old for this shit. Great video dude. Even better shots!

      "Architectural Photography hooligan" - that one made me laugh! A fitting name, if somewhat direct.
      Yeah, it's for our safety they say... for climbing walls I'm too old as well (ladders are just fine tho) but I am certainly old enough to take care of my own safety :) Safety might protect against harm, but it also kills the thrill.
      Glad you like the video and photographs!

    I love the creepy vibe of entering someone’s property for a shot. Just like street photography taking a picture of someone

      It's thrilling, yeah. For me, however, the excitement takes a bit of focus away from the photography. From a photographic point of view, to be honest, I would have preferred to have official permission.

    Yes you need to go back and ask to get in. I have done this a few times and I am always more focused on getting caught than on my photography and rush my setups. I always enjoy your videos. Done very nicely.

      I guess you're right. In addition, there is also the filming, which already detracts focus from the photography anyway.

      No security, but on the terrace on the 3rd floor a balcony door was open with a person right behind it at the desk - I was quite startled. A quick chat though and everything was fine - fortunately.
      The only thing missing is a person climbing around on the balcony - or hanging down from the top one instead of icicles :)

    Hello Thomas! You are getting better at making videos, this one seemed directed like a movie to me, somehow different from the others so far and I don't mean just because of the choice of different music, there were also other elements like the surprise with the sliding doors :) Is it a construction complex ? It looks really big and worth exploring! I really liked the last photo, it would get "portfolio" status for me because of the interesting architecture and viewing angle.
    Cheers 👍

      Hi Miro! I put much focus on the story this time (as soon as I saw that ladder, the script began to form in my head) and also tried with a little bit of acting (there's no Clooney hidden in me though). The whole process was great fun!
      It's a brand new office building and not overly big. The surroundings are still under construction, but else it's almost finished and partially occupied (also by the architects that designed the building). What is still being done is the complete greening of the two longitudinal facades - that'll certainly look interesting.
      The last photo is one, I'd like to do again with different light and a wider lens, because I also like it - I'm just convinced that there's a better photo to be had.
      Cheers

    All seems pretty arbitrary what gets kept, portfolioed and whatnot.

    • @thomasrhinow
      @thomasrhinow  8 месяцев назад

      Well, it is sort of arbitrary, as these are completely personal assessments. But certainly not random or ill-considered. The reasons have no place in the on-location videos, but there are videos and community posts in which I explain my decisions (maybe there will be one for these pictures).
      Cheers

    Very nice video and you are turning it more and more into a real movie! Something completely different, do you know the Swiss group Zeropage? They are on RUclips and make some very nice electronic music (also all kinds of dance music). I assume you like electronic / synthesizer music, because of some of you music choices in videos ;-)

    • @thomasrhinow
      @thomasrhinow  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you Kees for the movie compliment! I did my best to put the focus on the story this time. It all started to form in my head when I saw the ladder. Scraping a story together directly on location and then filming it is challenging (being at the edge of legality doesn't help for a clear mind too) and I'm happy that the result comes across like I intended.
      I haven't heard from Zeropage, mind posting a link to their channel? I couldn't find them. You're right, the techno era from early 90s on played an important role of my youth.

    Is this brutalistic construction going to be demolished? Why they blocked the passage to it?

    • @thomasrhinow
      @thomasrhinow  8 месяцев назад

      The building is brand new and the outside areas are still under construction, hence the barriers. The spiral staircase is "only" an emergency staircase and normally the access door from the outside is probably locked. I was lucky that the workmen placed the door stopper (and left the ladder over the weekend), so I could get up.
