How Rain Boosts Creativity for Abstract Architecture Photography

- Taking out the Ricoh GR II once more for some architecture photography, but this time with a twist!
Yes, rain can be annoying for photographers, but also a blessing at the same time, because it covers the city's streets with all those nice puddles.
The reflections in the water open up a very different view of the world, especially of architecture in cities. Otherwise clear lines get rippled and broken, foreground and reflection mix and create a level of abstraction that makes a photograph appear like a painting. Familiar places and views are transformed into something completely new, which is something I try to achieve anyways with my architecture photography.
Once again the Ricoh GR II proved to be an excellent choice for this kind of abstract architecture photography. The freedom of movement that this camera offers is extremely practical, especially in the rain where quick action is an advantage (and also makes up for the lack of water resistance of the Ricoh GR II).
Thanks for watching!

Cool content🙂
Ricoh GR best street mate. Been with me since 2018. But I don't dare take it out when it rains🌧️
Thanks :)
Yeah, a great camera! I use it occasionally in (light) rain. Hope it continues to survive!
Cheers
Good eye! Great variety of awesome prints.
Thank you!
Some great images there, total freedom with the Ricoh.
Always a joy to use and the versatility is just great.
Cheers
Great inspiration for me to get out in the rain more.
After the rain works too ;)
Cheers
Inspiration pur - Chapeau !
Das freut mich, danke!
Thomas, your images are a constant inspiration. The videos are very engaging and I almost feel that I am there and exploring with you. Well done 👏
Thank you very much for your nice comment! It always makes me happy to hear that my work can inspire people. And the icing on the cake is when the videos are also well received.
Cheers
My experience is that when I am limited with equipment, I become more creative and think less about technical things. I love the freedom that compact cameras provide. Nice urban exploration and great video Thomas!
Although I sometimes did miss a long lens there (luckily buildings aren't fast runners and I can go there again with the big camera), I totally agree! Although that sounds contradictory, self-restriction often boosts my creativity too. And not only with gear but also other things like sticking to a location, genre, idea, concept etc. Does need some discipline though to not get carried away.
Cheers Miro
Richtig gutes Zeugs👌🏻
Merci Alex :)
As always, Thomas, great content. Thank you for sharing your creative process. It's so very inspiring for those of us who see "Things" a little differently, things you just can't walk past.
Thank you so much for your nice words! It's great to know that I can spark inspiration for creative work.
Gruss
Thanks Thomas for another great presentation. Love your approach and style. Those rainy images very cool.
Thank you Rolf, I really appreciate your encouraging comments!
I learned a lot. thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
What a desolate and almost spooky area :-) Nice video and photos! And you’re right, GR and rain are a very risky combination ;-)
Thank you Kees! The aera is much less desolate as it comes across in the video. It's a former bonded warehouse (Zollfreilager in german, not sure if that's translated correctly) turned into a mixed space for living, art schools and artist's workshops. A quite interesting "composition" of old industrial, new and renovated buildings.
GR still alive, but I keep pushing my luck :)
Cheers
Great video as always. I'm curious what settings you got? Greetings from Poland.
Thank you!
Almost all images are f/8 and 1/100 on auto-ISO, except for the ladder one which I shot with f/2.8.
Cheers
Enjoying the content without a voice-over. Letting the photographs speak for themselves.
I'm glad you like the no-voice video concept!
Cheers
No voice is better totally agree, just like silent movies we still knew what was going on. Most youtubers like the sound of their own voice.
Good choises. Thnx.
Thank you
Thomas, after my art phortography training at the academy, circumstances had kept me from doing much photography for the last two years, other than on vacation. Your films make me want to go on a photo walk again and feed my passion for minimalist architectural photography. Nice to see that the Ricoh GR can be a lighter and compacter alternative for my heavy Canon

Hi Marc, would be great if you go out and shoot again!
The Ricoh is a great little camera for many uses and its size and weight make it perfect to always have it in the pocket. The fixed 28mm equiv. lens can be restricting though - especially when it comes to architectural details and abstraction. Every now and then I miss a longer focal length, when I only have the Ricoh with me. But luckily buildings are bad runners and I can just come back with the big camera.
Cheers
Tx for the response Thomas. I use mostly the EF24-105 on my Canon 6D and use the EF-S 10-16 on my Canon 60D.
Could there ever be a scenario when a photo is a keeper and worth printing out but NOT a portfolio piece?
Yes for private images like family which I wouldn't want on the public website. With non private images only for working prints as a help for final decision if I want the image in the portfolio or not. Maybe also for printing experiments.
