    I have brought my camera(s) with me every single time I went to the dog park with them since March 2008. I have 10's of thousands of pictures of my dogs. It's amazing looking back at them now that one is passed, one is over 16 and stiff and arthritic, and we've added a new puppy into the mix. When the little one passed, I started an Instagram for each of the dogs. Then I set up some synch scripts to my phone. Every few days, I go through pictures from the past and upload one or two. It's an amazing catalog of my bestfriends.

    Amazing advice. That really is the answer! 10,000 hours also applies to photography.

    Thank you I really enjoyed this. I see you shoot film from your examples which I enjoyed. To add to what you’ve said, finding your style is trying everything. I learnt quite quickly that getting up at 4am to capture a sunrise, or sitting by a river for two days freezing to capture an otter, etc., were not my thing. I like street as streets are always there. :) it took me a few years to find my own style looking at the work of the Magnum photographers. Saul Liter was an inspiration and it was a style I followed, but in my own way. I think so many RUclips videos are about “Pros do this”, or “Pros do that.” Let’s be honest to learn what so called Pros do look at their body of work. So thank you for this video I only have one complaint 😂. You dissed Nikon. Why? The best camera you have is the one your carrying. For me it’s now a Fuji mirror less. Before A Nikon FE film camera. And holy of holies Leica are overrated. Owning one was the biggest disappointment I ever had. Keep up the good work and thanks again for your thoughtful advice for people seeking a style. 😅

      Thanks for watching! I mean no diss to Nikon! I agree that the best camera is the one you have with you, and I ended up connecting more to range finders than SLRs, but I put tons of rolls through an F3 and F5 over the years before my leica!

    those are wonderful thoughts into the process and what it means for you man, thank you for sharing! I totally identify with a lot of what you say, particularly about daily practice and allow projects to emerge organically. I mainly rely on writing for expressing myself but I realised a little while ago how important it was to document aspects of my life, not for any other reason than to be able to show family images from my life in London (I'm from Greece originally). Since then I've discovered the joy of creating these bundles of images as well. I do wonder whether printing would be worth it - however it needs to be said I only have a little Fuji x100v, don't shoot film, so don't really print out as much (though perhaps it's worth it). Thanks for sharing your thoughts man!

      Thanks for watching! Give printing a shot, get some small prints made and leave them in a drawer for a month or two, then come back and revisit and see how they strike you after some time away!

      @@aestheticcontrol I find that my camera records truest to what is in front of me, both in brightness and color matching, if I stop it down one full stop from zero on the light meter. It looks closest to what my eyes see when I do that. Looking like what my eyes see isn't always the goal, but if it suits a particular shot it is something to try. The trickiest part for me is simultaneously getting the lights on store signs to look like their true color without underexposing the rest of the frame, that does get to be a challenge, a real balancing act, tight rope walk, however you want to put it.

    Very thought provoking. I have two camera systems. Both are too large to carry everywhere as I enjoy landscapes and some wildlife photography. I do grab my Nikon D700 with a 35mm lens when going into town at times but it is still uncomfortable to carry everywhere. I am thinking for maybe a small Fuji camera or a camera with a fixed lens just to carry about when going into town or taking a daily walk. Researching to find a good walk about camera that I feel comfortable with to take on the cuff shots of "normal" activities.

    Hey, thanks for sharing your amazing photos. I particularly like the deep black on almost all of your photos here. What film stock do you use? Any colour filter attached to your lens?

      Thank you! I've used a yellow filter off and on in the past, but mostly no filter these days. I think everything in this is hp5 rated at 800iso and pushed in development.

      @@aestheticcontrol I see, that explains a lot. I always shoot HP5 at box speed, I think I’ll try to push it 1-2 stop next time!

    Steven Pressfield, and many others, remark on the creative process in a way that is complementary to your thoughts. Pressfield in particular has a lot to say in War of Art and Do the Work about simply showing up every day and doing *something*. In your case, it was carrying your camera to the dog park. For me, it is carrying my camera on my daily walks with my best friend. Like another commenter remarked, I have a body of work associated with my dogs that has some good shots in it. I have those captures because I carried the damned camera when we walked. ;)
    I suppose I should comment that this is not about mindlessly pointing the camera and pressing the shutter release. It is about *looking* and choosing those moments when there is something that touches that part of your brain that says "this is interesting."
    It's those reps that help form the neural links that make ones style, I think. The quality of the reps is important.
    Nice video. Well done. I like many of the photographs as well. I would like to know what your printing process looks like.

      Thanks for watching. Perhaps I'll make a printing process video soon. I vary between a canon pixma pro-10 and dark room work when I have time, but both have their own workflows!

    I do all computer stuff with my laptop connected to my 43" 2K tv. That's how I view all the pics I take. So, subconsciously and/or consciously I take that into consideration when I try to compose shots. I think about (maybe too much) how visible certain items may be to me on my 43" screen but wonder how others might view my images. I wonder if there is a standard size format for viewing and critiquing photos nowadays. It's pretty cool that such large viewing platforms are so affordable now, but I wonder how it has changed photography and the viewing of.

    • @aestheticcontrol
      @aestheticcontrol  8 месяцев назад

      Honestly that sounds like a very rad set up! But yeah, I wonder how it would feel to view the photos as small 8x10 prints and compare how they feel to you vs. the TV
