    It's very interesting how skateboarding also intertwines with photography a lot. In this past month since I've been learning about photography I've realized that there's a lot of crossover with skateboarding too - which makes perfect sense since someone has to film. I was just completely oblivious to all of this stuff before I got interested in photography. Very wild have an epiphany about this stuff so late in my life

    Very cool. I think I just have a little more experience to get under my belt so I can feel confident enough to photograph at shows and stuff. Right now I feel quite a bit of imposter syndrome since I'm so new. I feel like everyone's going to be like "he's not a photographer what's he doing here???" haha I know that's not the case and won't really happen, but I think once I get more comfortable with the basics I'll just throw myself into the deep end because that's what I do with everything I learn

    Wow this is awesome. I'm new to photography, but also an avid hardcore/punk fan of many years. I played in local so cal hardcore bands back in the early 00s. And then for you to break down how to get the exposure and stuff was amazing. I'm so glad I found your channel

    That section talking about how picking the photos you like out of all the shots for that day helps you develop your taste and style really resonated with me. This is 100% true for me so far in my photography journey. I'm brand new, and have subconsciously doing this since I started a month ago. Go out and take a bunch of pictures, and then select the ones that make me feel something and tell a story. Then I have these 'aha' moments, where I'm like "ohhhh, _that's_ why I like it". I literally just had this realization yesterday, where I started thinking to myself "oh wow, that was cool. I want to find more things like that to photograph". It didn't really hit me at the time, but that was just my brain going "yeah that looks really cool, lets find a way to do this more often and more efficiently next time!". So totally makes sense that doing this process over and over, it's inevitable that we can start to realize "let me do X or let me do Y to get the preferred result faster next time". And then on top of that, I started noticing themes within my preferences about what I liked. That literally led me to drive around town looking for more stuff like that that inspired me. So without thinking about it, I was essentially developing my style. Very cool. I didn't really think of it that way but that was totally what I was doing

      I'll go 6400 or even 8000 for a show. The files hold up fairly well, and I don't mind the digital noise with some work in post! This is for black and white though, they get much harder to deal with in color around 3200, but I don't do that often.

    Can you elaborate as to why you shoot film? Thanks.

    • @aestheticcontrol
      @aestheticcontrol 10 месяцев назад

      It's really one of those things that just clicked and stuck with me. When I got back into shooting film and developing it myself around 2009, it just satisfied something in me that digital has never really touched. There's a physicality and material nature to it that I don't get from digital. Scanning is fine and gets the job done, but a dark room print is something digital never touches. There's also a built in element of time-away from the the images. Waiting to develop several rolls lets the images "rest" so I come back to them with fresher eyes instead of immediately pulling things off of a card at the end of a shoot.

    • @tkarlmann
      @tkarlmann 10 месяцев назад

      @@aestheticcontrol Do you use an enlarger and make prints, or do you print the digital files? Is your darkroom used to develop the film only? Alternatively, I find seeing the images right away can tell me immediately how an image could have been improved.

    • @aestheticcontrol
      @aestheticcontrol 10 месяцев назад

      @@tkarlmann I do both digital printing and dark room printing. I prefer dark room for sure, but don't always have the time to print everything, so I usually do a few test prints at smaller sizes to get an idea of what I want to take to the dark room. I do all my development with patterson tanks at home. That is a very real advantage of digital, and I use digital for some paid jobs for sure, but I find I'm always happier with a less than technically perfect film image over a perfect digital image. But, photography hits everyone differently, go with what works best for you! Thanks for watching!
