Aside from Danger Time obviously being an annoyance for tournament setting, I think YRC is the only blight on this game. I don't know whats the better theoretical nerf - making YRC 50 meter, or making it not slow down the whole screen.

I agree. For me plus r is the most fun to play, and rev 2 is the best looking. Strive loses most of the style and visual flair from rev 2, and drops series conventions. It’s not a bad game, but it does really pale in comparison to plus r and rev 2

Blazblue next maybe 😏 But really GG +R or actually Accent core plus was my first fighting game and to this day the hypest FG in my opinion and a game I will play for the rest of my life and if you're looking for a game with similar DNA to old Guilty gear then BB is that and more every character in that game is unique and plays their own game so every match fells like it's a new game and while that can be applied to a lot of fighting games only games like Blazblue and old Guilty gears ( not strive) reach that level of..... Expression 😶 ( I hate that term but I think its the truth) if you think that BB is too balanced for you then try a match against Izanami

Ngl, feels nice seeing someone like Elphet in this game. I feel like most of the time people go "ah, shame her design is worse in strive, but good thing they changed her gameplay for the better now" (because people hated how op she was in xrd). I actually don't fully agree with that. Well, the design thing yeah, but I feel like she lost everything that made her kit interesting in this game, she kinda became a high low rekka factory in strive lmao Tho on that note, I am actually sorta mixed on the character kits in this game. Potemkin as ya said is one example, tho I also not the craziest about characters like Slayer and Axl in this game, even Johnny tbh (even if ofc the latter is much stronger in this game, he felt more interesting in +r to me), in general +r feel like everyone had their most varied kit, helped only by stuff like force breaks, and the mixups the old roman cancel system allowed But stuff like the new items Faust pull, and the new Grinder mechanic with Ky do help, and I do enjoy characters like Sin, answer and Ram, tho I do also miss Zappa, Aba, Kliff. Overall I do say I enjoy xrd2 tho. I don't like stuff like the yrc slowdown on neutral, I like the mixups and quick desicions the old system led to more, and I can understand why people often vring up danger time as a really bad mechanic (even if I am mostly fine qith it as a casual player), but still overall enjoy good ol guilty gear fun, even if I say I like +r more. Glad ya are enjoying the game, looking forward to ya trying Ky and Elphet more :] Also huh. Didn't knew xrd had that better on crouching thing, I knew third strike had it

The funny thing is that in your example Hayao not doing something that hard to execute if you know the timing of air parries for air tatsu This moment is pure game knowledge. Thing that keeps people away from fighting games is very high entry execution barrier. My favorite example is smash. Smash on high lvl of play is very execution heavy game but you can have fun right from the start using all character base tools with no additional executional knowledge required. In classical fg even simple task such as do consistent Dp is challenge by itself for every new to fg player.

  • @cob1million

Personally, the aspect of fighting games that I enjoy the most is the fast-paced 1-on-1 mental dialogue that isn't seen much in other genres. I'm not the kind of person who feels that “doing hard stuff is fun”, so execution often just feels like an additional cognitive tax or source of variance that obstructs the parts of the game that I do care about or find rewarding. In that way, it only really serves to detract from the overall experience for me. Which is not to say that other people shouldn't enjoy it - that would be ridiculous - but just wanted to throw it out there that people might enjoy some aspects of the core FG package and not others. Granted, I'll still put up with it in games like +R and BBCF, since I still enjoy what they bring to the table over more streamlined games, but it's a lot easier (for me at least) to feel motivated to stick with it when the rewarding bits are consistent rather than variable.

I’m not saying they’re easy, they just aren’t as fun to me. A lot of the fun and challenge is in the motions and execution… I totally understand the dev’s push to get more people to buy their game. I've said it before, but nine times out of ten when I talked to people who bounce off of fighting games? It wasn't because the inputs were too hard or they dropped their combo. It's because they went online, got face rolled, and weren't given any input on what they could have done different other then "Yeah that sucks buddy. Oh well, back in the queue." I do think that it's good modern fighting games are trying to be more accessible, but lowering the execution ceiling isn't how it's gonna happen.

Thank NorCal for pushing the "accessibility" crutches, imagining that sales would boom. It may not be obvious but, they pushed this and tried to convince players for nearly 2 decades, that it would increase sales and grow the FGC. The first to push out this trash idea was SF2HDRemix. Everyone went back to real ST because no one asked for a dumbed down version. Still, one failure wasn't enough and they had to fail harder. They sold the idea to every publisher across the board, despite repeated failure. Then they went full out and came out with SF5, and shills, to this day, will convince you that the problem was the lack of one player content and "the launch," when, in reality, the problem, from day one, was the gameplay, beginning with 8 frames of input lag because they purposefully tried to remake SF to be more like a 3d game with frame-counting to compensate for the lack of real time visual reactions. Sadly, there's an entire generation(the participation-trophy generation) that were led to believe that execution was arbitrarily challenging and a gatekeeper to playing the games, "for real." This, of course, was just the "call of the scrub" but refined for a new and less analytical generation who were looking for crutches, not challenges, but also wanting the same prestige that competitive games brought to players. There are levels to these games and in prior eras, if there wasn't any competitive execution bars, there was no reason to have a competition on it. Anyone can perform and because of that, no one cares. Those were called "casual fighters" and that wasn't offensive, back when, because the delineation was clear. Execution and challenge is why SF remained the actual king of fighting games in competition until SF5, when they threw away their actual selling point over their competition because NorCal ideas were just bad, once you analyzed it to the fullest extent. They've been lost for decades and Capcom should really get out of NorCal. Their fighting game ideas have been regressive for far too long. It will take until SF7 to get back to serious competitive form. The NEW thing is to pretend that guessing was always a part of Street Fighter. lol It started with pretending that all street fighter games are different to make excuses for SF5. If you think execution is a "gatekeeper" it's because you aren't good at the games. Imagining that you are good because you can make the right call is not the same as performing. Boxers aren't good simply because they can see an opening and attempt to strike. They need all the other factors like speed and accuracy. If you complain about execution then you only like non-competitive or casual fighting games. We wasted years and tons of growth, chasing an imaginary fanbase , following the "accessibility" pipe-dream. It's good to see that those pushing it have finally begun to realize what smarter-types understood, 20 years ago.

While the air parries and walk up 720s does address your point about high execution, you do know that the last, most hyped, most talked about part of Hayao's performance did not require high execution. In fact it was a simple 1 button press. It only required a simple knowledge of that normal is airborn and Ken's attack will whiff. So that part actually contradicts your point. What makes the last part work is the mental stack. Hayao's ability to retain that information (Hugo's normal) that has long been ignored by the general viewer and if not even all pro including 3s god - JWong. Nothing to do with execution. Yes, the interaction BEFORE it needed high execution. That helped BUILD the drama/hype. But the finality itself? Nope. Just a simple timed 1 button press. Regarding your point in general... I have nothing against high execution. It does add to the mystique of not only the game but the pro themselves. It is like watching a wide receiver make a one handed catch. It is amazing and entertaining because you can't believe some one can do it especially at that critical high-pressure moment. But let us not forget that high execution is only one aspect. There are other aspects that can make a game entertaining to play and watch. SF1 has one of the hardest execution of all SF games. But no one wants to play or watch that game.

KI2013 has pretty low of an physical execution barrier you can mash out a combo with a classic anime fighter style of light->medium->heavy->ender/extension. That game is a mental battle and infinite skill curve though combo breaker is a simple layer that lets you get your turn back by learning your opponents habits and mixups, to boot it's just pressing punch+kick of equal strength and most of it isn't too restrictive apart from manuals. Counter breaker is an equally powerful thing that lets your opponent think they're getting their turn back. To top off the sound, and visual design also contribute to the hype of these moments with having a lockout symbol if one gets counter breakered or an explosion if a combo breaker works. Not to mention something people miss. There alot of old games with high execution barriers but are thrown to the wayside and there's even modern high execution games like KOF and right before strive we had xrd. Alot of what people want or pretend to want still exists... To answer your final question of onboarding I do think single player and "arcade" content should be the way to get new players in. SF6 does a fine job gameifying the mechanics like the pizza minigame for motion inputs.

There was someone that retweeted James basically saying it was a shitty take and that execution should basically be taken out of fighting games. It was the scrubbiest quote I've ever seen and it wasn't a troll. That person was doubling, tripling down, etc. in the replies to his retweet. It was wild.

That's bizarre because that clip had nothing to do with execution and everything to do with a read and game knowledge. James is a very dense as usual.
