7 Year OLD Thermal Paste Still Good? | + Keyboard Giveaway
While I was on a trip overseas my friend Minh picked up this card for me, thank bud. I though $100 was a decent deal, and sure enough it had never been repasted. I hardly ever see this with 80 class or enthusiast cards. They are typically repasted at some point.
Anyway, this video didn't go as well as I planned, mostly because I forgot how blower cards operate, Its been well... about seven years since I have bought one, and I almost always throw water blocks on them. SO my apologies in advance.
appreciate you all for checking out the video anyway, and good luck to the person who wind the keyboard.

    15:50 I do the same for the kids in my fam. I have opened up my PC to show them the parts. They still find it super cool. In fact i think pretty much all of them are on PC lol. Some of them even made their "setup" similar to mine (my setup is an absolute mess lmao). One thing i absolutely didn't do was tell them the real price though lol. I want them to be cost conscious. 1 of the kids was inspired enough to build a PC. He had a lot of trouble but went through with it mostly on his own and didn't ask me for help till he had an issue (ssd with OS wasn't booting, needed format). And he was also cost conscious despite the build being entirely on his dad's wallet. His dad has PLENTY of $$$ but even then he chose not to spend a lot. I am hoping my influence on not needing $$$ to having a gaming PC was part of his evaluation lol.

    I repasted my dual-fan 3060ti using noctua nt-h2 and my temps dropped from low 80s to low 70s, and some less intense games run even cooler. I didn't even replace the pads because I didn't have the right size. Repasting is definitely worth it in my opinion (but look up pad thickness and order pads ahead of time lol)

    • @techwandoUS
      @techwandoUS День назад

      Nice that is a very good result. Typically with pads, if they are the more rubbery ones, they last forever. The worst ones some companies use are the ones that have threads or a paper like feel to them. Tons of the 30 series FE cards practically used paper to cool their gddr6x. Just changing the pads dropped vram temps by 20°c 😅

    It's crazy how well the 1080/ti hold up 7 years after their release. There is a chance we won't see another gpu that offers that level of value again. I'm happy with the 7900x even though there are new cpus dropping. The 7900x is great for its price and should not disappoint. The AM5 socket should be around for a while, so I can miss a gen or two, and it shouldn't hurt too much.

    I always enjoy the older hardware videos It seems like Intel knew about this problem but continued with production of the faulty CPUs. What's wild is that there doesn't seem to be any QA verification from Intel after they first found out about the issue. I would feel much different about this is they issued some sort of recall instead of doubling down that this is merely a voltage issue

      Hey man, I just finished up the recent hardware unboxed podcast thing they do. What's that saying about ducks? Walks like a duck... It's starting to appear more and more likely their is something up with the hardware. They are probably going to try and implement as many patches as possible so when they have to explain the real issue, it will look like they tried and didn't know. It was pretty annoying to find out about that oxidation issue as well because that is something they did know about and they didn't bother making an announcement in any way shape or form. At least AMD last year made good with people and their situation. Appreciate the comment as always.

    That card will be a good candidate for a aio. The blower style cooler is a war crime. But considering amd tells customers its fine how their rx 5700 xt runs at 110 degrees i guess that is the standard now somehow. With Intel you also have the feeling this microcode update will do next to nothing? I think they can polish the turd all they want but it will never start to shine.

    Seems like the quality of just about everything dropped noticeably during/after CViD. Shipping lanes backed up, company shut downs etc. I suspect we will be feeling the effects from that for several more years to come. Wish I could remember which one it was but I subbed to your channel since I am new to PC building and all that fun stuff, it's turned into quite a passion so thanks for your informational videos! Whichever one I watched, I'm sure it helped me with some issue or gave me the advice I was looking for to help me build the beast of a gaming setup that I love and am now quite proud of ^-^ Being a total n00b to all this, do you think that I should be more cautious with my CPU/GPU, like, check the paste in the GPU and pads, maybe add some to certain areas of the PCB that are rarely covered by pads? Like VRM(?) chips? Seen videos of breakdowns where a really great channel ranks different GPU's based on the way they are put together and how the cooling works/where the thermal pads are in relation to where the heat is generated inside the cards. Really fascinating stuff and I am loving learning about it. I know ya might be thinking that a beginner maybe shouldn't be taking apart their GPU but I do my homework kinda obsessively lol I'm pretty confident in opening one up. I'm actually going to do a full clean on the first used PC I started with and re-paste the CPU/GPU and give it to my parents for browsing and spreadsheets n whatnot. It's a pre ryzen AMD 7 CPU with an RX560, seasonic 500w PSU that I did some upgrades to for use as a music production setup. Still works good but I can hear it crying out for some TLC and I think a good solid cleaning could give it a couple more yrs of life. Sry, off into the weeds a bit there. So I guess what I mean is, do you think with all these problems being discovered even in top of the line parts that it's worth checking what I've got? My RX6800 is a bit noisier than I feel it should be but temps appear to be fine. Maybe the 3060 I started with spoiled me a bit on realistic expectations on how the more powerful cards from AMD sound like. That 3060 is seriously nice, I'm pretty sure I won that silicon lotto ppl talk about with that card. Thing way outperforms everything I have seen and everything everyone told me it couldn't do, it can. I plan on putting it into the new music production PC I am in the process of parting out. Got a 7800x3d and a 7900XT on deck for an AM5 gaming setup and will just transfer the AM4 mobo into a new case for the production rig. I would like to crack them open and check the PCB's in the 6800 and 7900xt to see how well they are protected since XFX warranty isn't voided by doing so. Considering putting some little thermal pad squares on the exposed chip areas if there are any. I'm betting there will be. Do you think this is worth doing? Am I taking it a bit too far? Or is it a good thing to be thorough like that? I guess I'm just really ambitious and have kinda found a passion in all this, I want to learn and make sure this stuff is working and protected as well as can be considering the expense of it all. That's another thing in regards to the CPU issues being discovered, the 7800x3d. They run very hot from what I have learned. Can't say I'm not a bit worried about cooking a mobo considering I really do not want to use an AIO. Something about them just really doesn't sit right with me and I'm not sure why I feel so hesitant about them. Perhaps the added complexity of the maintenence in water cooling. I have read alot of reviews of people using higher end air coolers on the x3d's saying they work. But you just never know reading a review, how long have they had that running? A week? A month? 6 months? IMO, that's right when problems would likely start to appear. Hasty reviews sketch me out, can't trust them. And it's so hard, even near impossible to find info from people who have had a setup like that for over a year with solid feedback. Guess I ought to sign up to some forums on reputable sites and start some discussions. Sorry this is so long, I have a bit of a hard time keeping things brief as I'm sure you've noticed. If you feel up to answering any of this, it would be greatly appreciated. I see you have just returned from a trip so by all means, take your time and get comfy before going through my screed lol TL;DR Is it worth checking out my newer hardware for thermal efficiency? Check their pasting jobs, thermal pads etc. I've got a hunch I would put alot more love into it lol Thanks a bunch! Cool vid, I sure do love learning about this stuff. I really ought to run that 3060 through some of these benchmarks and find out why it just works so well. In some ways it was more impressive @ 1440 in Hellblade 2 than the 6800! Which is nuts! Nothing but impressed with that card. Wish I could have gotten a 4070ti super but it just seemed silly to sidegrade to another 16gb VRAM card. Plus I got an insanely good deal on the 7900xt. Future games are going to become much more demanding since photorealism is here and I am really into the graphic spectacle games. Anywho, I'll spare you here lol That keyboard looks pretty neat! One of the last things I have yet to upgrade since I didn't really see the priority in it. I like that it's still got the arrow keys. Since my favorite game is darkest dungeon and it uses the keyboard for movement, so 60% isn't really an option. HAH! I just remembered, I bet that I found your channel when I was learning about keyboard upgrades! Could be wrong. I'll have to go through your vids and see if I recognize anything. Alright, for real this time, count me in on the giveaway! That would be amazing! Congrats to the lucky winner! If anyone else feels like chiming in too, I'm open to any other inputs. All perspectives are appreciated. I'll look forward to whatever else you've got coming out in the future. Perhaps some stuff on PCB's in GPU's and thermal efficiency? Or general efficiency in uncertain times? Things to look out for etc. Subbed, liked and enjoyed. Thanks! BTW 1080ti for 100?? Man I gotta check out some used GPU's. I did start to notice the length of this one, so I held off on replying right away. The app for creators if so bad on the phones, and I won't be at my desktop much till later this weekend. As for the discussion of if you should be taking apart your stuff and checking it out... I think it doesn't matter if you're a beginner. As long as you do things very carefully and with a little bit of confidence, you'll be fine. Also suggest recording the process so that you can watch it in reverse if you have to put it back together and you forgot where a screw or something went. The pcbs are very strong, my other suggestion is to obviously do it on an area that has low static and make sure any of the small caps located pretty much all over the board don't get knocked off or else you could end up having an issue. Caps are the tiny little capacitors scattered all over, you probably knew that. Touching on all the other Hardware that you have. It seems like you have quite a few really solid things going, the 7900xt and 7800x3d are awesome. I also see that you mentioned you were thinking about putting the 3060 in a more professional rig? I personally think that the Nvidia cards are better with the studio drivers when it comes to audio and video based applications. Amd offers really good gaming value and can do professional stuff as well, I've just had better luck with Nvidia personally on that end. Also yes, start with that 6800XT for your first trial, I have a friend locally who does that all the time.now for locals, just repasting GPUs and CPUs. Ordering pads and stuff. Some pads and paste can really lower the temps and improve performance quite a bit also... Can be a bit addictive. Sorry if I'm missing anything here. It's really hard to read on the phone mostly because of the applications stupid response setup, I wish I could screenshot it and reply like an email style reply. As for people running the 7800x3d, If you're worried about an AIO just slap a really nice Noctua air cooler or an assassin cooler on it. They will definitely do the job. The AMD chips run hot but at least they are efficient unlike the competition (my Intel chip gets ridiculous). I have a friend that's been running a 7950x3D since launch with a Noctua cooler, he has zero issues. AIOs look better of course, but you might have pump failure or something years down the line. As for the keyboard, I am not sure if I had a keyboard video, but honestly I might have one, it's been a while. If you find it lmk. And best of luck with the drawing for the keyboard. I appreciate the well written comment also, it's always cool to see others heavy passion in the industry. Hopefully I didn't miss much. Edit I did... Ahhh yes the 1080ti..$100 is pretty solid for this kind of performance. Basically a 3060 range at this point. Definitely check out your local markets, sometimes insane deals pop up. 🤙

    I have to say, from my experience the GPUs tend to be more tolerant to the...need for paste replacement. It can obviously help, not in this case as you hilariously showed, but IMO year for year they tend to need it less than CPUs. At least that's my experience. I have to say man, I wouldn't go near a blower style GPU ever again. The last two I got (15-18 years ago) were the HD4870X2 and the Radeon 6850 and they were horrifying in how hot and how loud they would get. Never another blower style again for me. Never. OK the 6850 was better, but still bad. Speaking of CPUs. I heard AMD pushed back the release of their latest ones and even called back the products...for a couple of weeks. Any idea WTF that is about? I mean, if there is an issue with them, how are they going to fix it in two weeks and have the products back for shipment? It doesn't make sense to me. Good for you doing giveaways. Bravo. I have done it several times before, but only for software. It feels good when you do it, doesn't it?

    • @techwandoUS
      @techwandoUS День назад

      Yeah it's probably the last time I will pick up a blower too. They make sense for servers and small systems but they are loud and unforgiving haha. Also I remember those old AMD cards, turbine jet noise from those bad boys. Also your right about GPUs. Definitely can go a bit longer. As for AMD, They sent out a bunch of them to system integrators and apparently they are not all running within spec (is the rumour). So instead of having some massive Intel style issue down the line because one chip doesn't clock high enough, they are just holding off until they figure out they fix. Now these are just the rumors going around so I won't say that that's 100% what it is, but it seems likely, as they did have similar issues before. Appreciate the comment man.

    Hey man, love the keyboard. Oh yeah what about AMD putting a hold on the 9000 series CPU's. There are so many people mad about it but it's like you want them to release CPU'S that are having issue's running to spec. Crazy, good conversation to make a vid about. Another thing, I don't believe the problem withe Intel being just about micro code. They are just refreshes of what 12th gen, idk we'll see when they ship out the update. Good vid man.

      Yeah I think you're right, people should be happy they are not shipping out a defective product. It's been said in a few videos talking about the game industry and broken games... "Late is a little while, sucks is forever" Gabe Newell. Maybe Intel should have stood by this ideology.

      @@techwandoUS For sure. You know honestly I like friendly competition but the Intel/AMD battle is not friendly LMAO. But, just for a second IMAGINE IF the 2 got together, corroborated a CPU with the 2 techs. Get a P-E core with 3d Vcache on a die with a single ccx setup. No sharing cache between a split CPU, know what I mean. I understand they have quite a few with the ccx on one main, but with Intels E-P core setup. Be able to set it up where you have the performance cores with the Vcache and having the CPU as a whole run like AMD, where you can just use it with no tune, something that just runs good out the box. That's why I love AMD's CPU's. They just run good as is and if you wanna "tune" it, just adjust curve a lil bit and BAM, top clocks with low temps. Easy peezy. Anyway lol just blabbing. People don't realize how much Intel has cost the "industry" in terms of money and time. It's gonna put a damper on em, you watch, not that I don't like Intel, but think about it, such a easy little fix, SUPPOSEDLY, that took em this long to respond to. I believe it's not gonna fix the problem, it's a temporary thing. Something in production got messed up and qc missed it. All I have to say is, people need to go back to the 12900k and rest there necks before it's to late. You have on to them 14th gen for too long and when they finally implode people are going to be stuck with it. I'd RMA the damn thing and wait till things are solid before moving ahead. 5800x3d on the best platform, AM4 Baby!!! Don't need for Nothing. Take care broski. Drew from BeanieBro's.

    It's going to be interesting with more recent cards that have had cheap-ish compounds applied on them. Kinda baffling that some cost saving mesure means cutting there, but at least some really good compounds have been coming out with more accessible pricing to ensure affordability and durability. Only had experiences with repasting laptops' or MXM's, and probably some GT210 I found a couple years back 😂.

    Confirmed oxidation issues with manufacturing + voltage requests being too high. Idk if this is known but AI/autoclocking has been around for a while + always been bad. My 8700k would be dead as well if I let it decide what voltages to recieve. Even now you are probably massively overvolted. my 13700k is everybenchmark/stresstest stable at 1.27V 5.4Ghz all core + 4.4ghz on the ecores 4.8ghz ring. My chip just doesnt do 4.9 ring at any reasonable voltage. My vid says 1.325v for this frequency however I don't let the VID do anything its disabled, all boosting disabled, static voltage, static frequency. Thing is that these chips are probably all designed around the base or old base of 1.0V to 1.2V so you can get away with marginally higher than that. The manufacturing oxidation error however has no excuses. If manually controlling my chip still doesn't protect it then they had better honor warrenties. I thought the voltages on these chips were wild since day one. Auto on my mobo shoves 1.45v at all core for 5.5ghz LOL

Honestly it makes the most sense. Probably why my first video was back (also first 13700k) crapped the bed.
