Yako Rides aGain
Добавлен 27 ноя 2013
Sitting at home waiting for the weekend to ride your bike, or dreaming of a holiday riding smooth, empty roads in the sun? Why wait? Follow me as I explore the traffic-free mountains of South East Spain, introducing you to the spectacular places I visit, their people and their history.
Every ride is an adventure. I plan new routes every week, sometimes gravel, sometimes road, but each one different, to make it a unique experience for me as well as for you. And I love descending - get ready to lean into those fast corners with me!
The ‘Rides Again’ from the channel title is because I started this project after being off my bike for a while following a tussle with cancer. (I’m winning). I didn’t realise I could see into the future though, as not only am I riding again, but I now ride a Gain, an Orbea Gain D10.
I’d like to thank Leonard Lee and his excellent RUclips channel for the inspiration to get back on my bike, but also for his old action camera I use to shoot my videos with!

(Almost) Riding the Pyrenees!
I’ve been desperate to ride in the Pyrenees again, and I thought today was going to be the day…but fate had something in store…FOG! Still ended up being a great ride.

I ride both a 2022 Gain M20I and a 2014 Orca Aero. I ride both because I fell back in love with riding the Orca when the Gain was in the shop for maintenance. Everything you said and felt about the 2024 Orca is true about the 2014 Orca. I love it!
Good to hear Carl. They are iconic bikes!
Spain certainly has a long and storied history with many structures still around to visit...yeah fog might have inhibited some of the beautiful landscapes but we got a history lesson . Here in the usa we do have some beautiful terrain but we have a relatively short history and very little in the way of historical architecture...I'm sure the Pyrenees will show up in future videos....
They definitely will George. Just need a whole day dedicated to shooting each vid and that's tricky at the moment. It's been glorious weather since I did this ride - typical!
Great adventure again yako thanks for taking us along cheers jim.
Glad you enjoyed it Jim!
Loved the history Gareth. The Catalans are obviously very camera shy, there's never anyone about.
Probably too chilly! I think Balaguer probably is bustling, normally. Someone had to have ruined those roads!
Wow you certainly can make the most wonderful videos. I am so glad you found your camera a real delight, thank you
Blimey Ricardo thank you for your kind words!
It’s great that Gareth the Raconteur can tell us all about his smooth and hairy mates all these years later in the absence of the stammering one who would probably take all day to regale us !
But Mark I missed out Charles the Fat, Holy Roman Emperor, or Charles the Simple, son of the Stammerer! I hope I am forgiven!
@ Charles the Simple was also known as the Straightforward apparently !!
We had everything on this latest adventure, fog, lost camera, stammerer, hairy & bald, Franco war. Wonderful historic stories of bygone times…thanks Gareth
I try my best! Ha, thanks Ian 😀
Great interesting ride Gareth. Love all the history stories as usual . Almost matching our cold at the minute buddy
Cheers for that mate. Yup, instead of giving UK viewers a bit of a respite I added to it! Typical! It’s beautiful today!
Well done great ride fascinating history lesson, always enjoy your escapades have a great weekend.
Glad you enjoyed it Terry, thanks.
Thanks for another fascinating potter round rural Spain! You need a balaclava in this weather, I forgot mine this morning! Chilly in Mazarron! You have a great relaxed style. Roger in Spain
You’re absolutely right! A balaclava would have been perfect. I simply wasn’t ready for those temps as I’d believed the forecast! Many thanks Roger.
Thanks for another good one! We had two emergency alarms on our phones here in the Mazarron Bay area during the recent Dana situations, but fortunately the worst bypassed us here. Trails very gloopy afterwards for 10 days or so though. Take care and stay safe ! Roger in Spain 77
I do find the alarms quite scary - the same tone as the ones we would have received with nukes on the way! Thanks for the support, Roger.
Just catching up on your adventures after recovering again. Nice to see you out in the Yak..Yako. I should be back yakking hmmmm maybe tomorrow! Woohoo! The unknown parts are the best when you can get to them! Thanks for the shout out brother! 🎣
My pleasure Bub. So sorry you needed that knee revision - fingers crossed they got it right this time around! Hoping you’ll be making a back in the yak vid if you get out tomorrow?
Hey Gareth, great to have you back and in your groove. It looked and sounded like you had just discovered your bike mojo again, just brilliant. Love the way the history just rolls off your tongue. Thanks Jade x
Just need the weather to behave and I should be all the way back in. Oh, also my battery charger conked out, but as soon as the new one arrives…! Hope you’re still smashing it there buddy.
Slowed down on the loss but that was to be expected, slow steady and constant now. FFWd 12 months and I’ll be half the man I used to be 🤞👍
Glad to hear that your Mum is getting out to see you Gareth. Does she watch your descents or hide behind a cushion ?
she’s just answered “hide behind a cushion”! Nice to hear from you Mark.
Gosh you really should have been a bob sleigh driver. I had to put a nappy on and I was only watching. Top top video as usual. Thank you very much, sorry we made you late for lunch.
Not surprised you needed a nappy; it was quite a long one, sorry.
Pick your own flints? Only pick your own strawberries around here, how times change.
Indeed. Rapid progress- not dissimilar to the Wright Brothers to the moon landings being only 66 years apart.
Good to see you back on it Gareth . Just bloody had one myself down there 😢. Great video as always mate 👌
Hope yours was short-lived? Can’t stand being off the bike! Thanks!
Loved the view from the downhill run into town. The foggy spots were reminiscent of some of my rides lately.
Thanks Randy. Not easy making vids in the gloom! Happily it’s rare…
Nice ride very well done, another great video with beautiful scenic views and historical information, those tracks looked as if they could well be puncture fairly territory. Enjoy your Mum's visit and a lovely week.
Many thanks Terry - the most polite man on the internet!
Things definitely looking greener.
our garden has gone from dusty desert to 2ft tall weeds in about 3 weeks. Slugs and snails everywhere! Bonkers!
Glad to see you back matey and still cycling and exploring.😊
Many thanks John - this ride set me back a week, but things are looking good now. Should be posting a wee ride out tomorrow then I’m hoping to head for the Pyrenees for the vid after that. Cheers!
Oh my. So good to hear from you but extremely sorry to hear about all the flooding. Such devastating losses there and also in the southeastern USA this year. Heartbreaking.
Truly is Sharon.
Hey Gareth, great to see you back and glad you are all safe. Nice to see the rivers and water courses filling up just hope the torrential rain holds off now. Looking forward to next weeks. Keep up the good work and look after your undercarriage! 👍
I’m trying mate but it doesn’t want to look after me! This little ride has set me back to the beginning. Grrrr!
Oh no mate, it so hard to keep under control without just staying off the bike, but that is not what you want to hear! Standing rides only? You will be like a racing snake in no time……
Hi Gareth, I've ordered a CS500 after watching your review. I'd been after a cycle computer with navigation for some time and this seems excellent value. Based on your own experience, do you know if I should order a ANT+ sensor for speed or does the internal GPS suffice for speed display?
Hi Kate - for me, the GPS alone is fine. Another sensor is just something else to forget to recharge/buy batteries for! I don’t think there’s anything close to this for the money - I think you’ll be happy with it.
Thanks for the prompt response Gareth. You're right, it's just creating more faff, especially as it'll be used on a few different bikes. I've ordered some Cyclami C2 brackets too as they have go pro/light mounts below.
@@katepollitt4033 ooo I need to look that up - I need an alternative front mount for my cam as I’m always forgetting my chest mount! Ty
Glad to see you back on the bike & safe. We spent the night of the storm in Teruel in a motorhome being rocked from side to side and blindly drove down into Valencia not even knowing what had happened. Got stuck for 4 days but finally the police allowed us to go through. The devastation was heartbreaking. Now safe and sound in Villajoyosa and ready to do some cycling!
Oof! NOT a good road trip! Did you do any cycling around Teruel?
@@yakoridesagain sorry for long gap in reply. No, not cycled in Teruel but I’ve seen the route boards near the Camping Aire near Dinoplis. It’s usually really cold when we are in Teruel heading for the coast for the winter.
Fascinating, thanks Gareth, those flood levels are unbelievable the river must have been kms wide. Glad you’re back in action.
I think every tiny, dry barranc became a raging torrent. They say building had encroached on them, and detritus/reeds had built up they had been dry for so long, impeding the escape of water. Historically this would be cleared away, but it had been so long, people got neglectful. There will be severe repercussions I think. Sadly this little ride opened up all the little tears in my skin down there Neil. I don’t know whats going on. 5 weeks off the bike now.
Great to see you out and about. I was thinking about you and the floods. Take care Mr. Yako!
We were extremely fortunate to have been bracketed by the two storm systems Jeff. Also, with the one that hit Catalunya, the authorities had learned from the Valencian disaster a couple of days earlier and the general alarm (and ‘stay-in-place’ order) came through hours beforehand. Sadly the Valencian government chose to ignore the met office warnings they had been receiving all afternoon, and even did a televised press conference to say the storm had passed just as it was reaching it’s peak and the floods were starting. Hopefully we will learn why this was done. I think manslaughter (3rd degree homicide?) charges will be brought.
The only con for you is the price is that correct !?
Simply, yes. I would personally opt for a 50/34 chainring and an 11-34 cassette, but I’m fat and old. Descending with the gearing this bike had was excellent! I suppose also I’d fit 28mm tyres too but these things I believe are options when buying new anyway. The bike is perfect. Is it on your Christmas present list?
Im glad you back on the bike again yako and thanks for the adventure. Cheers jim
Thanks Jim
Thanks Gareth, I was getting desperate to see those pedaloes afloat. You built the tension masterfully. Great ride-by at 14:50.
Glad you enjoyed it John. I think the pedaloes were grinning too.
I am pleased to see you well and back on the bike. In a strange way it's nice to see your river beds full of water again. You have been showing us brown empty river beds for years. Just so sad it destroyed so many lives to do it. The planet can be so beautiful and so dangerous at the same time.
Seeing flowing water, albeit without the silver flashes of a darting trout, truly filled me with joy, Ricardo. It’s the little things… I had thought about not including reference to the tragedy in Valencia, but it just wouldn’t be right. The poor souls down there are still in a terrible state - many without water or electricity.
Nice ride and video, you have had a terrible weather situation the last place I would expect to see so much rain. Pleased to see you back riding and your saddle sores have healed, Enjoy the rest of your week
Cheers Terry! Sadly this ride opened up the wounds again, so it could mean another trip to the Doc as this is just weird. You have a great weekend.
I bought a Orbea Gain M30 Flat Bar Custom direct from Orbea in April 2021, for £4168, the best bike I have ever had, but this year in June the battery failed, I wrote to Orbea about this, and got a short letter back saying, its nothing to do with them, its down to Mahle, the electric part of the bike, now after 4 months and minus £640 the bike is back in use, I hope that I don’t have to do this every 3 years (Paul Bragg)
Hi Paul. I’m a bit cross to see your comment - because I answered you days ago but it looks like it didn’t ‘send’! Sadly you have happened upon the worst element of owning an e-bike, and in this case, specifically an Orbea. Orbea and Mahle have never sorted out their accountability for when Mahle parts go wrong on an Orbea. They have the reputation of passing such issues off on each other, which is appalling for customer service (and future sales, in my opinion). Saying that, your issue was out of warranty, and it appears neither felt a goodwill gesture was in order. If e-bikes have a general weakness, it tends to be their batteries. If not stored perfectly, (or, again in my opinion, not used very regularly), a fault in one £3 cell can lead to the replacement of the entire £600 battery. With Mahle's system, this is also true for a fault with the controller, which sits inside the same casing as the battery. One resistor on the circuit board blows = new battery. Now for the better news. The Mahle system is one of the more reliable out there. Though I have heard of multiple cases like yours, I have heard more cases of six and seven years of fault-free bikes and batteries. My Gain is a 2018 model and the battery is in excellent shape with 18,000kms done, almost all in the few years I’ve owned it. Another owner did 36,000kms before needing a new battery due to reduced range. The key I think is to use the bike as much as possible, and if possible, to use a DIY range extender which halves the wear and tear, and load, on the internal battery. A Mahle extender will not do this. I’ve made a video on how you, or anyone you know who can do the 2 or 3 soldered joints required, can make one. An extender with quality cells should cost less than £120.
I’ve become a bit of a fervent follower of ebike systems reliability Paul, so what you’ve experienced is not at all rare, I am afraid to report. The Mahle battery warranty at 2 years is pretty much an industry standard, too. There is definitely a question about Orbea and Mahle passing the buck back and forth when a Mahle component goes wrong, but lithium batteries are not particularly robust, as it only takes 1 small £4 cell from the 20 to go wrong and the entire battery is a write off, officially. Other systems are no better, in fact many are far worse. I am sorry to tell you that it may have been possible, depending on the battery fault, to have had your ‘21 repaired/re-celled by some e-bike specialists. A very few have managed to work around some of the proprietary safeguards (that are in place to ensure you can only buy a new Mahle unit - oh, sorry, I mean to ensure your safety, ahem) to provide a cheaper alternative. For the future, all I can recommend is that you use the bike as much as possible. The recommendations for battery charging, use and storage are also useful, but I have never followed them, just used the bike most days, recharging to full unless I know for certain that I won’t be using it the next day. My Gain is now 6 years old, 17,000kms, with a very healthy battery even now, and there are very many others with older bikes and higher mileages that can report the same. Good luck with yours!
I hope you have managed to avoid the worst of the terrible floods your countrymen have experienced.
Thanks Mark, yes. Contrary to normal weather patterns, this system moved inland to the east rather than following the coast to clobber us as would normally occur. We’ve had an awful lot of rain but not the apocalyptic amount of Valencia.
Haha Agree with a lot of them Esp spd Peddles always
Thanks for the great vidio! Really helped me with my choice to get one for my Dream Retirerment bike Just waiting for it to Arrive and cant wait to get out and about on it. I also love the fact that you can truely make it your bike with the colour choices and other areas of customization thanks again
Happy to have helped! I agree - the MyO custom paint thing is such a great extra on what is a stunning bike. I have no doubt that you will love it.
@@yakoridesagain I am sure i will
Hi Yako, Thanks for the detailed information, really great. I'm about to order the parts and make this myself. 1) I have a question about measuring the voltage of both batteries as you mentioned it was important to have minimal voltage difference between batteries: I imagine you measure the voltage of the hoverboard battery at the terminals of the XT60 connector ? However where do you measure the voltage of the internal battery please? I tried through the ebike motion connector but didn't get a reading. I haven't yet cut up my Mahle/ebike motion charger, did you have to do this in able to measure the internal battery voltage through the new XT60 connection please ? 2)My goal with this set up is to increase my range and thus reduce the number of charging cycles. My current commute uses 57% of my battery which means I have to charge the battery every night. With this new setup, I could potentially only charge every 3 nights which would significantly increase the lifespan of the expensive internal battery. After using the bike for a commute, would you leave both batteries connected up until using the bike the next day please? Or disconnect and reconnect? Many thanks in advance for your awesome information and all of the participants in the comments on both videos. Happy cycling to you all.
Hi Marc. The bike must be switched on to test the voltage. The larger left and right holes of the charge port are the ones to check. I always disconnect the batteries after riding, as the system won’t fully switch off with the extender connected. You will also need to disconnect then reconnect if you allow the system to go into sleep mode, which it will do after a few minutes of inactivity. This can catch you out - you will not be able to get assist, or change assist levels, if the system sleeps, but a quick unplug/plug-in of the extender wakes the bike. Mine extender is still working perfectly, and my now 6 year old internal battery still holds 41.2v when full, so is definitely being preserved by the extender. Good luck with yours!
@@yakoridesagain Amazing, thanks ☺️
I thought you were going to say that blossom on that tree smelt of chocolate! Another great adventure. X
Thanks Mare. Sadly not, just the fruit!
So when can we expect video evidence that you truly have chaffing? Can you still canoe? That was a great video, you could nail wheels to the side of the canoe, anyway jokes aside I hope you get better soon, I enjoyed the Safari, the lions were great.
Safe to say the X-rated chafing video won’t be released on RUclips! Hoping to be on the bike for the next one, but if not yes, it will be another kayak adventure/history lesson! *lost the lions, elephants etc in the edit. Too dull.
Sorry about your undercarriage Gareth . You’re definetly unlucky 😃 . No seriously hope it clears up mate . Great video , what scenery and had a good giggle over poor luckys story 😂
You have a way of putting things in perspective mate! Yeah, it’s getting better…unlike Lucky!
so relieved...a land drover and not a jeep. You may actually get somewhere. Hope your back on the bike soon.
I should have said ‘jeep’, of course, but not everyone knows ‘landrover’. I remember using mine to tow a mates Hilux up a quagmire of a track where he’d got stuck. I wore a huge smug grin that day. Going to try a ride later today Dean, many thanks.
Was just wondering how you’re getting on. Good luck
Going for a spin later, rain permitting, Neil. I missed some perfect riding/camping weather sadly. Thanks mate.
You find your tree, errrrr then what?
That’s limited only by your imagination. You could hug it, invite it over for a movie, teach it to dance a tango - the list is endless. Most, I believe, yell: “I found it!” at the top of their lungs.
@@yakoridesagain You could bark at it.
Thanks Gareth, spectacular trip.
Glad you enjoyed it John. It’s not exactly a cycling adventure, but the best I could do in the circumstances!
Really sorry to hear about your abandonment of your challenge due to infection, a totally different video but still full of scenic views and historical facts, I've got massive admiration of the road building men. Enjoy the rest of your week.
Many thanks Terry. Hopefully back to normal next week.
I hit a large pot hole hidden in the shadows on a autumn day. Early Orbea with hose clipped on outside of fork only took a few minutes to drop fork out of bike to find steerer tube damaged. Also thank goodness its got just clincher wheels which I can fix in 10-15 mins not stupid tubeless which old people struggle to break free from the rim. May be the cycle manufacturers need to get back to basics
I agree completely- but then, those that work on their own bikes would know to avoid bikes that have features that make servicing very difficult. Sadly, it seems many cyclists are unable to perform ever basic maintenance, so I suppose many of these modern bikes are fine for them!
Cŕap another bike that will be a nightmare to maintain 😮
How so David?
Blimey, I think i need a drink now.
Me too! 😉
2:00 Roadie goes MTB :)
Yup! Completely clueless! Probably the first time ever in mud! I got better, but my month with the Rise was the most painful cycling month ever! Loved it!
