    Have you bike-packed with an e-bike? Have you got any tips you’d like to pass on, or a route you’d heartily recommend? Comment below!

    Known personal range….is correct. It’s down to specific rider ability, weight and the route. Coffee shops usually allow you to top up when stopped.

    Francis Cade uses the towel trick to dry his kit when bike packing, his recent trip to Singapore is worth a watch.

    Perfect explanation for why we love bike packing. Just enjoy the ride and enjoy the wonders of nature. Whilst charging is an anxious thing to have to do if you are fit enough cycling using me power if you run out of charge is also a great thing to do. I have no range anxiety any more since getting my new Scott Eride 20. I have a range extender but ride mostly using me power and only level 1 on hills. I also have a 4ah charger for the RE and am considering bike packing next year with good planning and research. Great info Gareth as always.

    Great little video, many thanks! I use the Via Verde route in Southern Spain at various stages a couple of times a week, goes from Totana to Cartagena or Mazarron, old railway route. Interesting countryside & wildlife, no traffic! My Kalkhoff ebike is 8 years old, coming up for 27,000 km, battery still good for 80-100km a charge, mixed hilly & flat riding. Stay safe, Roger in Spain 76

      Many thanks Roger. Glad you have a Via Verde near to you, they are incredible, the ones I’ve been on out here. Hopefully be videoing the Los Ojos Negros one in the next few weeks ( bikepacking, of course!)

    You brought up some good ideas there yako yes I can see the future of fast changing an ebike many years ago I cycled from Chester to Paris and back via a boat from Dover ord crome panner frame and cheep panner bags went clean shaven came back with a beard, one of the best things I ever did an adventure, how things have changed thanks for this weeks video cheers jim, PS why do you have one walking pole sticking out the back of your bike.

    • @yakoridesagain
      @yakoridesagain  6 месяцев назад

      I loved touring as a kid Jim, went to Brittany a few times with mates, enjoyed the more relaxed attitudes to buying beer, that’s for sure! loved it…a whole new world! My tent has no frame….it just uses a single trekking pole, like a teepee.

    Hi Yako,
    Some great practical points made. My additional tip, is something that you already appear to be doing. That is to pack your bike so it's more aerodynamic. Big panniers sticking out, catch the wind, slow you down and drain your battery.
    I take your point about weight, and this is connected to the aerodynamic of the bike, but a few kilos here and there aren't going to make that much real life difference. Compression bags are your friends!
    Terry

    • @yakoridesagain
      @yakoridesagain  6 месяцев назад

      Excellent point Terry, thank you. I used to use panniers, but they are pretty crispy these days! And of course you are right about weight…as always, the easiest way to cut weight is by dieting!
      Yet panniers probably offer an easier packing experience than a seat pack…If I could afford some shiny new lightweight panniers and rack, I’d be tempted…

    Hi Yako and thanks for your informative and entertaining videos! A thought occurred to me re. charging battery in cafés, construction sites etc en-route: surely you'd need an extension cable as it's unlikely you'd be able to park your bike within 1.5 m from the nearest power outlet? And a decent 3 or 4 m cable is heavy and bulky....

    • @yakoridesagain
      @yakoridesagain  4 месяца назад

      My pleasure Will! (?)
      The charger only pulls a very low amperage, so to make your own, pretty skinny/light cable would be fine…1.5mm2 would weigh very little (and 1mm2 could be enough). The outlet to charger cable bit of the charger is also very standard - you could probably buy a 3-4 m version for a low weight penalty and no wiring to do.
      I’ve not needed to carry an extension (I was intrigued so I just measured my charger at 2.64m) - in cafes there are often outlets near the door, or even outside for vending machines (this is normal at petrol stations). You may need to avoid the busiest times so that the staff have more time to indulge you in popping the bike somewhere to plug in, but generally, I’ve found that people are very generous and like to help.

      @@yakoridesagain Very True Yako. Of course the charger cable itself is skinny. Thanks!

    Wow, so many great ideas, it's like you know what you are doing. Nice to see the gain, I had forgotten what colour it is. Great video as usual. Thank you. Just one question , which sack did you pack Mrs Yako into?

      @yakoridesagain  6 месяцев назад +1

      Alas Mrs Y does not share my love of bikepacking, nor my own joy of squeezing into bikepacking luggage, so she stays at home.

    Hi Gareth, just back from my year 2 Highlands learning curve. Very different this year; used far less assist; generally flat-ish, or seemingly vertical.
    I found you start to do a instinctive cost/benefit analysis of each climb. For example, maybe I could do this climb with some zig-zaggy weaving, but will the cost tomorrow (muscle recovery, less battery) be too great or acceptable. As you infer, it's so subjective and only experience can guide you.
    Last year I needed to find a charge most days. This year I chose to dismount and push more often, happy with the cardio workout of that, as well as the battery saving. I found it was really nice to mix 45-50 mins of cycling with 10-15 mins of bike-hiking: felt good to rest the lower and work the upper. I looked forward to breaking the days up in that way.
    No clip in shoes. Mostly trail, where I'm sure it's easier to do that.
    I wouldn't be out there at all without this e-bike. Not wedded to a particular approach, esp. when it's the perspective of younger/fitter generations.
    Loving the vids; excellent production, great discussion points.

      Sounds fantastic Andy. I have no issue with pushing either, and like you say, it can be nice just to get off for a bit! Thanks for the support!

    Nice informative video, technically is moving very quickly and charging times will gradually decrease.
    Im sure more and more places will offer cycling facilities as at the moment its an untapped area but im sure they will realise the potential.
    As for bike packing id sooner use a bed and breakfast.
    Enjoy your week.

      Oh I’d def prefer a proper bed - but if you’re proper knackered, tents and hammocks work just fine! I think you’re right mate; things will swing into helping e-bikers….it’s money to be had just sitting there.

      I cut loads from last weeks vid, Chewie, as I rattled on for the whole 2.5 or 3 hours, non-stop. I cut the bit where I mentioned you, or rather Anita, saying “he can talk, can’t he!” when watching one of my vids! I also left in bits in this one where my eyes dart from side to side…I do that when trying to recall stuff, don’t know why, but I stopped for a chat as I didn’t want to crash!
