So glad you mentioned Thomas De G, king of the Solo & Breakaway. Brilliant & enjoyable scary rides… me? I wouldn’t dare attempt any…congratulations to a brave man
Love this video! Thrilling and terrifying at the same time. Nice footage too. My PB is 88.2kph on a busy 60kph road! Some very surprised looks from the drivers I was flying past 😁.
Ha thanks Vane! The new camera is helping, but our internet connection here is so slow I still can’t upload better quality footage. it’s frustrating!. I learnt descending from whizzing past cars going down Cheddar Gorge in the UK as a teenager…it’s twisty. My record speed from back then was 75mph/120kmh so I’ve a long way to go!
Well yako I enjoyed those down hill descents a bit scary I would think parhaps not to you ,you seemed a happy man at the end of the video , looking forward to where you will take us next time,, cheers jim
Thanks Jim. I do love the fact that on descents I can get close to pro times, which is nice for a bloke in his fifties. On uphills I average twice the time of the fastest guys, even with an e-bike!
Hi Yako - I too have a marvellous Gain D40 so went to my local shop to see if they have an Orca in just so I could see how light they are myself. Bloody hell!!! It weighs less than my full water bottle - an unbelievable thing. However, I'm not sure how I could sneak one into my bike shed 😊
I’m not just mucking about when I keep picking it up in the vids. I saw what you wrote and just nipped out to go and pick it up again! I reckon you could sneak it in alright - but then there’s that credit card bill landing like a brick on your doorstep in a month! Saying that, this one might be crazy money but when I do the full review there will def be some who are surprised at what there is available elsewhere in the Orca range…
@@yakoridesagain I know how you feel. I looked a right tit in the shop just picking it up, laughing, putting it down then picking it up, laughing etc. etc. I thought if I secretly sold a kidney for cash then no need for paper trail 🤔
Enjoyable video thanks Yako. I do love the downhills too as I have given up trying to go uphill quickly.😀 I reckon if you’d have taken your mitts off and shaved your arms you would have got those top 10s 👍
I trust after having the bike for more time you would know the handling characteristics of the bike more and have full confidence...when you are one with your bike you can be aggressive and not being so reactive. Remember a pro bike also earns it's mark for being light and being great going uphill not as much down hill where a riders ability has far more influence on speeds. I am sure that bike is incredibly responsive.
My fastest descents are all on my Titanium frame endurance geometry bike, its a bit weird. I have a really fast aero frame carbon bike which i set my best times overall by miles but theres something really solid about the Titanium on descents !
Nice bike mate, you are brave on those bends. I have 30mm on my Gain but always playing around with the pressure. I just don't feel the grip I am looking for in some of the bends. I am using the stock Hutchesons, I am thinking of changing to Conti 5000’s. Keep the videos coming, from Moraira, Costa Blanca. P.s. How lucky are we with these Spanish roads😁
Very! It really is a brilliant cycling country, isn’t it! I don’t think you can go wrong with the Conti’s, but a lot is down to believing in what you have. My Gain is now on €10 Conti Ultrasport 3’s, which last week took me down that first descent 2s faster than this Orca, which has the fastest rolling tyres made. Have you used an online tyre pressure guide? They use your weight, bike weight, tyre size to give you the ideal pressure. I had mine tyres too hard for years.
Hi Mate, yes I have tried the charts and settled around their pressures. Maybe is just me really not having the full confidence to lean the bike. Now don't kill yourself, keep the bike right side up🚴
Exciting stuff. However I doubt the slightly lower rolling resistance will overcome the benefits of higher mass when descending. Your results seem to confirm this.
Absolutely, but I needed a hook for the video! And it was a lot of fun/bloody hard work to make! Blew through my cardiologist imposed 135 bpm limit of the first run (160. stupid thing to have done!). Confidence is the main thing I think, and I went a bit gingerly, (someone else’s expensive bike etc)…
@@yakoridesagain Hello Gareth, another factor to conside is your profile - the less you (and me) present like a wardrobe on wheels .. difficult I know, but that lower handle bar might make all the difference.
I’ve really worked on this Andy, but I’m not happy fully tucking if it’s very twisty…That first descent, that I know so well, I can concentrate on getting my chin over the bars, rounding my shoulders, elbows and knees in…where I fall down is my lack of a decent sprint into the start I think.
Anyone have any advice for a new ebike shopper? I have the choice of a heavily discounted mahle x20 hub motor ebike or spending almost double on a mid motor ebike. The mid motor has a higher top speed and probably more power but 4000 more is definitely a huge amount of money. Am I going to be missing out on some "fun" or am I going to be constantly wishing i went for the more expensive, more powerful bike?
The top speed will be the same, restricted by law in your country to either 25kmh or 32kmh. Where there will a difference is how much help you get crawling up very steep climbs, where the mid motor is superior. So much depends on you...how fit are you, how heavy are you, how far do you want to ride, how steep are you local hills. A heavily discounted X20 and 4k in your pocket does sound like the obvious choice though! What are the two bikes?
Def for most, just not for me for braking…I am happier with the greater ‘feel’ I get when braking on the hoods, and with hydraulics you don’t need to be using the ends of the levers to get the maximum braking. From vids I’ve seen I’m as low on the bike with either hand position too…give it a try! M30 - lucky you!
You really are determined to die . The daft thing is I am really scared all the way down , it never crosses my mind that you must have survived to upload the video. Fantastic video, from our King of the Hill, tall slim and nearly handsome. We'll done, have a beer
No room for me and my belly on the top bar (also most of these descents are too twisty. If I could fit, it would def get me that elusive 100kmh. Back on the diet for me!

Thomas is the Man, in my opinion Ian. A proper Belgian hardman cyclist. And he has a beard.
I have the roads to go fast. Smooth and empty. That’s all.
Excellent decent very well done on your handling skills.
Definitely wouldn't be doing that on our roads in the UK.
Enjoy your weekend.
Thanks, will do, you too Terry.
Love your videos but just stay safe out there. Take care
Will you accept safe-ish, VS? I will try, promise.

Skinsuits…..🙈 I’ve still got mine from years ago…. Can’t believe it ever fitted me😀

Truly living a dream riding it George. Still a bit in awe of it, but more days like this and those KOD’s would topple, I’m sure of it!

So, the same with you. Aero, mass, tyres….all important but comfort and confidence I think ace them. I’m still fastest on the Gain, my home from home.

@@yakoridesagain Fair enough: safety first. I'm probably projecting my own frustration at having the aerodynamic qualities of Victorian furniture.

Missed this message, apologies Desi. You have something to look forward to then, as old age encroaches on your fitness!
