In “Smile” The Doctor said to Bill in regards to the vault “A long time ago, a thing happened. As a result of the thing, I made a promise. As a result of the promise, I have to stay on Earth. Guarding a vault” so when the flashback says a long time ago it’s just echoing the Doctor’s words. He promised to guard the vault for 1000 years and in the opening episode Bill suggests that some people think the Doctor has been teaching at this university for 70 years which means a fair bit of time has passed since the previous Christmas special. Missy has been in the Vault for all this time because the Doctor promised to guard her. I hope this makes things clearer in terms of timelines!

Trust me, finally of this series is one of the best ever!!! Until then, Enjoy this one. Next episode is even more mind-blowing

I really like this episode. But the way the CERN people - and the Doctor in particular - react to realising they are in a simulation makes zero sense to me. There's no way humans would unanimously conclude the logical reaction to that is to terminate themselves. They wouldn't suddenly decide their existence is meaningless, because its based on computer code, and not carbon. And the Doctor acknowledges and values sentient artificial intelligence all the time.

Finally we arrive here FINALLY ! I LOVE THIS STORYLINE 😊😊😊 The moment with the Pope is SO FUNNY 😆😆😆

The Veritas episodes are not fan favourites, but they're fantastic episodes. Personally, I love them - and how they connect in to the end of both the 12th Doctor's arc and Missy's arc. Peak Who, even if they'rre not the most popular.

i feel like ya forgot that Doctor Who is an episodic show, not one single story connecting the entire season, sure there is a bit major plot often happening, but it always tends to happen at the start and the end of the season, the main beauty is the episodic stories

The "Pope" alternatively had a nice family that possibly were exterminated in a British Camp in "Turn Left".

It is said that these movies are "soft disclosure" and that the universe is really a simulation matrix.

If I want to sell someone on Doctor Who, I would show them this episode. Even without context (person might not know about Gallifrey or regeneration) it is wonderful television and writing.

The line " how long can I keep doing this, burning the old me, and make a new one" 😭 That's exactly what he does when he regenerates

I thought the episode was pretty good, although the messaging about capitalism could've been less on the nose. But I hate the bit about the Doctor being blinded! That felt like very old-fashioned television, for want of a better way of putting it, and it's a very feeble idea for a science-fiction series in which the main character can do all sorts of technical wizardry when it suits the writers.

Nicole asked about Air Conditioning. I'm in South Wales, UK. My house doesn't have AC, just a fan. Office can blow cold air but isn't really an effective balance. I associate AC with supermarkets, ironically. I started noticing AC coming in mid 90s. ... you hold up an alcohol free beer. Did you know in the UK a 5 year old can drink beer at home (under the supervision of a responsible adult)?

One of the biggest difference is there's no aliens/supernatural. The big bad are human beings. Like in episode 3 or episode 2 (in a way)

He did say back in season 9 that putting the regeneration energy into the Daleks would cost him and arm or a leg somewhere down the line or in this case he couldn't recover his sight

I'm very surprised you didn't got right away the Doctor was joking during that whole section in 20:53. Go rewatch the scene again and observe his tone and how Bill reacts to what he said... He was just trying to comfort her and probably himself as well

Multiple episodes have stressed just how much the Doctor hates taking the slow road. For River, he willingly took the slow road for 23 years. In this case, I'd say the sunrise is loving her right back.
