What you are looking at here is a very rare one of a kind prototype Pencrest 300 box fan that Lakewood produced with a 6 wing blade set instead of the typical 3 wing set! Best we can tell this was designed to be a competition to Lasko's 5 wing box fan at the time but after making this one and seeing how it performed they decided to go back to a 3 wing set! Not something you see every day!

    That turned out great, bro! The dark Hunter has a great look. Nicely color matched(close enough), without the baby puke green we see on some restos. Thank you for the shout out on the paint technique and assistance. You know I always got your back and wouldn't recommend anything I haven't done. The final result is one to be proud of! Even though we are spoiled with pre-1910 fans(your tank for instance), the AOU is hard to beat. That and Emmy 29646s. So glad you are helping keep these old beauties for around another 100+ years!!! Apologies for not getting to this sooner. You know the situation, but I made sure to take the time to properly praise the work you did. I like that you stick with it until done. Too many people get overwhelmed and never finish theirs. Keep it up, bro! 🤜🤛 🍻

    I have the 16 inch variation. It is also very cosmetically rough and the blade is a little bit bent up. Also, it has a busted grill. But I got a replacement grill for it. I plan to fix the blade and guard and do the wiring but leave the cosmetics alone. I kind of like the faded glory appearance..

    Very nice restoration! A few years ago I bought GE Fan off ebay with the brass fan cage and blades that dates between 1910 to 1914. Unfortunately the wires were cut going to the head. I am pretty good with electrical but I had a difficult time finding exact wiring diagrams for a fan of this era. My fan has what looks like a transformer in the base of the fan. I really would like to see if the fan runs before I start restoring it. Currently its been sitting in a box in the closet for a few years. Can anyone tell me a good website with detailed information on the exact wiring for a fan of this generation? I've watched every RUclips video i could find on these early fans but couldn't find anything that showed me how to wire it from scratch. Once I see that it runs it will be a huge motivation to continue with the restoration. Any advice or links to wiring schematics is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Very nice fan. I found a rusted up one at an antique shop once like yours but it had the star wheels & was a steel blade fan. I fully restored it & sold it later, I really didn't have a good spot for it. The hardest part was replicating the curved cage wires as a lot of them were cracked were they were coiled around the hoop part. I had to drive some heavy nails into my workbench to make a bending jig for the new wire. Smooth running fan when it was done, wish I didn't get get rid of it as well as an oliver batwing typewriter but oh well. It was all going to be a part of a steampunk/retro computer desk Idea I had. Start with a hidden popup typewriter desk & build your computer in an old radio case. The flat screen monitor would be in mabie a slimmed down tv case or picture frame & the mouse made out of an old telegraph set. Also somehow wire up the typewriter to do keyboard things.😁✌👍

    Hello! I know this videos is old, but I've browsed forums with little help. I just came into possession of one of these fans (Pre 1960 as the logo on the shroud is red.) Everything works, and the spin down time is a little over 30 seconds with no out of the ordinary sounds. I'm not an expert on these, but it seems to run a little warm. I've heard the old shaded pole motors tend to run warmer due to them being less efficient but just out of curiosity I checked it with a thermometer and it read just over 103° Fahrenheit. I suspect that it may have been apart at one point in time as the nut on the bottom has been replaced with a much newer stainless steel square nut, and rhe blade is ever so slightly crooked. Anyways, I just wanted to know if i should be concerned about the temperature it runs at, and if its normal. Like I said, it makes no noise, has a nice long spin down time, and seems to be well greased. Just wanna know if its normal to run that hot. I should also add that it doesn't seem to slow down when it gets warm, nor does it put off a bad smell. Thanks in advance!

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 4 дня назад

      Nice! Yeah GE used shaded pole motors on these and much like all other GE fans they tend to run pretty warm! As long as the windings are below like 130 to 140 degrees F and the amp draw is within spec I think you should be fine! 103 on the outside of the motor housing isn't bad at all! Thanks for Watching!

      @colin_5839 4 дня назад

      Sweet! I recommend a full mechanical and electrical servicing before running it too long. Pull the thing apart and replace the old head wire, revarnish the stator, fresh fiber washers, fresh rubber gromets, fresh grease in the grease box, clean up the switch and fresh oil wicks are always good too! Many of my other videos show these steps in details and it's pretty much the same stuff no matter what fan you are working on. Also, I'm always happy to answer questions to let me know if you need help! Thanks for Watching!

    • @colin_5839

    If I could just get the blade off. Mine is obviously oiled well but I need to get in there. I've tried using two screwdrivers to pop the hub off from the back but that sucker is stuck on there. I did it! I got behind the blade only with my fingers, pulled real hard and wobbled back and forth, pops off. For anybody else taking this apart, open the gearbox and remove the gear that's engaging the worm gear on the rotor, then remove the rotor. Put the rotor back in before you put that plastic gear in.

    Do you repairs? I live in Los Angeles, I have an Emerson 77646--AN (I can't read the last digit of the 5-digit #, so it could be a letter) I took it to someone to repair the "cord" everything was working fantastic, but the cord looked frayed and got warm, so I thought I needed to replace it. When I went to the shop to pick it up, he had it running on low, so I thought it was fine. But, it does not work. It had different speeds, it oscillated but no longer. It has sentimental value to me, and just a cool fan.

    • @colin_5839

    Neat! Would be cool to have the whole X-ray setup for it. And some lead to hide behind lol. The AC and DC voltage will always be in direct proportion to one another. Load on one or the other circuit will change them slightly, but the DC voltage cannot “climb” without the AC voltage doing the same. You could probably run something like a simple shaded pole fan motor by reducing the voltage to around half, ie 60 or so. And it would run at half speed. Would need to use a transformer rated for around twice the voltage, ie 240, due to the half frequency. It would be fun to play with!

    Very interesting. Tell me, does the Hit n Miss engine draw fuel each and every engine revolution, or just on the firing cycle?

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 28 дней назад

      Almost all hit and miss engines only draw in fuel when they need to fire and so they really don't use much fuel at all. There are some I am aware of that govern themselves by cutting out the spark (Such as a Maytag 92 for example) and those will continue to bring in fuel even when not firing, however, the vast majority that I have seen do not work this way. Thanks for Watching!

      @@colin_5839 thank you. How is the fuel supply interrupted? I guess there must be some mechanical means of cutting fuel off automatically, but don't know what that is.

      @@jakemurphy9536 Well when it's coasting without compression theres nothing to suck the intake valve open and if intake valve isn't getting drawn in so there's no suction going through the intake so suck any fuel into the engine either

    Stellar video! I have the same fan, it stopped working today and with your help I had it back up and running in an hour or so. Are you able to share the STL for the oscillator knob?

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 28 дней назад

      Thank you! Ohh man that's awesome! So glad to hear that! I would share the STL, however, I unfortunately didn't design the knob, it was sent to me by a viewer of mine so I don't have the file sadly. That being said I think my buddy Rob will be reproducing these knobs in the next few months or so, so hopefully you can get one from him if he does! Thanks for Watching!

    I have a Frigid P20 3-Speed box fan that has a tremendous amount of sentimental value to me. I am trying to find someone that I could pay to fix it. Do you have a side-business where I could send it to you for repair? The fan worked without issue all of last year. I stored it in a room for the winter and then a month ago plugged it in to run it but the motor did not turn on at all.

      I'd be happy to help, however there might be 2 issues.... One might be the cost of shipping. I'm located on Long Island, NY so I'm not sure how far away you are but shipping a big heavy metal box fan like that might be pricey. The 2nd issue is there is a good chance it might just need a motor. If it has a General Electric motor in it chances are it's done what those motors do best and the connections with all the aluminum windings they use have failed. ( It even happens if the fan is sitting around not getting used!!!) I would start by first double checking that you can spin the blades my hand and they spin freely and if that's the case, take a look at that motor and see who made it. I know Frigid used those GE motors in a lot of their fan, but some did use Westinghouse motors, which have proven to me MUCH better motors in the long run. Let me know what you find out! Thanks for Watching!

      @@colin_5839 Thanks Colin for your response. Is there an email address I can correspond with you further on? Yes the fan blades spin freely. I am unable to ascertain the model of the engine but maybe I am missing something. I'm highly motivated to pay someone. Are you able to replace the motor if it ends up being the motor? I could always order another working vintage Frigid fan and have it sent to you and we could take out the working motor and have it put it in my fan. Let me know what you think and how to best reach you. Thanks!
