  • Figured it's been a very long time since I did one of these videos and with the weather getting really nice up here again it would make sense to get some of the vintage fans I brought to school with me up and running again for the season!

    That is a very "cool" video Colin 😁. It is neat to see some antiques still alive and well thanks to you! Great video can't wait for the next one.

    Ok, this is going to be probably a relatively long comment, so brace yourself lol. All those old window fans are extremely cool, I really would like to find one of those Laskos with the oscillating louvers! Just the other day, I actually picked up my first ever box fan. I’m sure for you it isn’t really exciting, but leaps and bounds better than the previous modern “window fan” that we owned. It is a 1994-95 “Air King by Lasko” box fan. Apparently model 9733, it has what I have found out to be called the D bladeset. The blades were all warped, and I was able to reform them with the aid of a hair dryer. It is rather impressive for what it is, moves a good amount of air without making too much noise, and has a great range of speeds, really pushes air through the house. Got it from my restore for under just under seven bucks, they had a spin the wheel sale day, and I got 50% off! Now, onto the Knapp-Monarch. Really cool to see the progress you’ve made on that, looks like it runs extremely well, and I like the speed controller that you built for it, definitely seems to be more convenient than having a hulking variable transformer on your desk LOL. Tried doing a bit more work to mine, but the bladeset is just so screwed up. Now looking at it, it probably is savable, but it would probably take a good five hours to get it back into both round and clock lol. Although the actual hub with the set screw in, it is made of brass, and is also pretty messed up, the inner diameter of it is way too big for the outer diameter of the shaft. I also would like to install proper brass sleeve bearings in it, although that we will probably wait for another day, I think it would be better than just having some milled cast-iron as a bearing surface lol. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to show those old beauties running!

      Thanks! Good luck with that! There aren't too many of them out there! Yeah those D blade laskos suck! They always warp! Glad you were able to get it straightened out though! Yeah that speed controller really comes in handy! They actually make cheap small ones you plug into the wall for the 12 bucks which are also super nice for these old dime store fans that only have one speed! That's really too bad your blade is so screwed up! Maybe you can find a suitable replacement some day... Thanks for Watching!

    That emerson needs to be repainted since the whole fan was painted in ivory. I had the emerson window fan and it had a ton of power. Mine also had speed coil issue.

      I did a super quick and messy paint over job on that thing this summer because it was really nasty and I didn't really care if it looked pretty as long as it wasn't rusty and gross. Maybe at some point I will do an actual restoration on it, but for right now I honestly dont care enough about it as it looks good enough for what I'm using it for right now. They are great fans though! Thanks for Watching!

    I have a 1912 (I think) GE BMY 12” 4 blade fan that I restored it. After I got it running, I ended up with 2 issues. 1) I couldn’t find a way to conseal the 3 wires coming off the stator to the control panel. They are blue. I tried to wrap them in a black woven cloth with no luck. 2) my motor house get real warm after only about 30 minutes of running.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

      Very nice! For the headwire, I'd just get some reproduction cloth covered wire and rewire it... really no other way to do it and make it look good. As for the temperature... what is your definition of real warm? Do you have an infrared thermometer to measure the temperature? Is it within spec amp wise? Have you properly serviced the motor? Thanks for Watching!

      @@colin_5839 I tried to thread braided cloth without success. I'm now going to try PET covering. I will try to take it's temp soon. As far as "Properly servicing" I'm not sure what that entails. I oiled the 2 sleeve bearings and that's about it. What else should I have done?

      @@colin_5839 I had it on high for about 30 minutes tonight and it shut off by itself, too hot to touch and I smell burning wires. 144 degrees. Not it doesn't turn back on on any setting.

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839  Год назад

      I would have just used reproduction cloth covered wire from the beginning rather than trying to cover up some other type of wire so I'm not entirely sure what to recommend there but based on how hot that got and the fact that it shut down on it's own it sounds like you had a short in your stator somewhere that now went open circuit... Take it apart and ohm out the stator wires.... I have a feeling it might be time for a rewind unfortunately but the ohm readings will tell you for sure

    Awesome video man!
    I had a question and the forums dont seem to know an answer.
    I have a lakewood S-23 and when I turn it on, it makes a weird vibration sound (It is not a buzz) when it gets up to speed it goes away. The fan runs fine, but it has a really cool startup sound that is drowned out by this annoying sound.
    My guess it has something to do with the bearings (because theres scoring on the shaft) but I have no Idea how to replace or find bearings.
    Any advice? Thanks.

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839  Год назад

      Thanks! Make sure you check all the obvious stuff like the grills and that the blade is tight and what not and if it still makes a lot of noise add some oil. If the bearings are worn to the point that they rattle even after being oiled you would be able to feel that slop in the shaft so you can check that too.

    • @Trshslsa
      @Trshslsa Год назад

      @@colin_5839 its not any buzzing or grilles or anything. To note, when I oil the fan, black liquid pours out everytime.
      I have cleaned the bearing already. Maybe that has something to do with it
