Hello! This is a Black Fencer brand synthetic and I bought it for…$250 canadian I believe. Not expensive. Depends on where you’re ordering it through. It’s a lovely solo trainer.

You can certainly learn basics from RUclips, and practice cuts, footwork, get your balance right and improve speed. So you can get into it and look good for solo work. But then it comes to this: Without someone watching to adjust the finer points, and someone to practice drills with so you have resistance to your attack or defence, there’s only so far you can go. Learning measure, appreciating proper level of force, and having someone ensure your feet are in the right position, or hands are held high enough for particular techniques, that needs someone else. But you could always try to find a few local people who share the interest, all of you watch the videos from the various HEMA people, and help coach one another. That’s probably the best path if there’s no club near you.

@@LaurenDangerShaw there's only my ten year old younger sister, not more skilled than I am and we have no special things to train with. And besides,if she's smaller than me,can she use a smaller sword and can we use sticks if others aren't available? Also,are there any extra exercises to stay suitable for it. Idk maybe to improve or help with some moves,I mean anything related? Sorry to bother you with so many questions, I'll be happy to get the responses

Hi! I’d probably use something other than WD-40. A 3-in-1 oil, or even leather care oils will be fine. While there are references to cleaning maille with sand, I have tried it and it takes forever to get all the grains out of the links si in modern times I don’t recommend it. When you get the shirt where you’d like it, an automotive care product like Autosol paste could be applied with a soft brush to finish the cleaning and help prevent rust, but be warned: all of this is messy work. Having a bin you can place the maille into and laying down a cloth is helpful. Dump out rust often, and when you oil and polish the armour, really shake and move it, and then seal it up with a towel (to absorb any moisture) You’ll need to wipe it down before wearing but it will look and smell much nicer for all the effort.

Hi! I believe so. I can certainly point the thumb over the guard and along the blade. Seems to be okay for dropping the short edge from a high bind.

Historically, the straight blades would be more common but it really comes down to what you like the look of. Wavy blades are cool, and let’s face it, greatswords require effort and training. Go with what makes you happy to look at and swing around, because we’re not defending bridges or gates, nor are we fighting pike formations. We’re having fun!

Hi Arckanda! Old video but I have email alerts, plus there are no dumb questions!So let’s figure out a rapier. Handguard: you could get tennis tape or ice hockey tape, add some long strips aling the handle to build it up and change the shape, then wrap around in a spiral and that will make it comfortable. You could do a cup hilt, as that is easier. Take a cheap plastic bowl, slowly make a hole in the centre (don’t snap the plastic) and use that as the guard. Hot glue will hold it in place. If you’d prefer a metal bowl, you’ll need to drill the hole, and wrap tape on either side of where it will sit. You di the handle aide, slide down the bowl, then wrap the blade side. Now, if you want a cage hilt, that’s more work. Wire is needed, heavier the better, and then you can wrap that in tape, but likely you’ll have to re-shape it often. Hopefully that gives you a bit of inspiration and do ask more questions if you’d like!

It is fun! And the club I know of most is found at www.torontohistoricalcombatants.ca and they are specifically about fun times. There are a few others. If you search for HEMA Alliance as a website, they have a club finder that can assist you with a few other clubs, though I don’t know much about them. Hopefully that can help!

I think getting hit with any blade is going to hurt enough, but making a messier wound would certainly make everyone else watching think twice about continuing the fight. Psychology at work? Maybe!

@@LaurenDangerShaw That sword isn't the only kind that had a wavy blade.The Kris sword was used and it was a stabbing weapon,but only against lightly armored enemies.

I know of the kris blade and it would be cool to own one. I wonder how it does against plastic bottles…it would be fun to try!

I’m glad you liked it! Edges bite, flats slide. There’s a footwear joke in there I’m not willing to make. But yes, the sword is as much about defence as offence, and being under it is like having an umbrella to use against raining steel.

In some regions of Germany the German equivalent of "goat foot" is in use: "Geißfuß", also "Cow´s foot" or Kuhfuß is common.

Perhaps I am too focused on holding it like a mini poleaxe, looking for the control of getting it into the gap of armour. This now warrants a target setup and testing, because yes, I could do that.

@@LaurenDangerShaw the chance of encountering a modern opponent in full body armor is slim. if you do you likely have other difficulties such as guns. the poleaxe was a special-purpose weapon which depended in part on length as well as blade and spikes. not all of the assumptions hold with a shorter impact weapon another way is to hold it with the hands widely spaced and slide the dominant hand to the non-dominant one for powerful swings. or thrust with the pointy end, come up with the other end and then up into the chin followed by into the face with the other. end. straight out of older bayonet and riot baton training.

there's a wealth of information about how to use those intermediate length clubby things. a crowbar can inflict disabling or lethal damage if you know where and how to hit with it.

I’m mostly discussing it as a fictional situation in games because I told my ttrpg friends I would, but I appreciate the information. As for weapon uses historically, I’m good with the manuals I have, but thank you for suggestions.

In the real world it’s not great, but I like the idea of treating it like a smallsword. Just a lot heavier, but mitigated with the grip position. Of course, this was mostly a game idea, fictional positioning. Because skeletons leaping out if the tomb you just pried open need a smack with the blunt edge. ;)

Short answer yes. Long answer: no one will hear it, but they may think you look a bit weird for random angles poking about. You’d need to secure the sleeves for certain, some cloth wraps to keep it tight. Then you should be as good as Frodo!

I had written a big long reply but I should keep this simple. In my opinion, Gabriels are about the same as SG mittens right now, with the exception that a pinky hit against SGs will be easier to take than against the Gabriels. If you are good at preventing most hand hits, Gabriels will be great. If you get hit in the hands a lot, bulkier clamshells are probably the way. HF Black Knights being top tier at the moment. Finally, as for why people use SG mitts over bulkier but more protective clamshells, it’s about mobility. Lower profile gloves let you have a better grip on the sword and be a bit more nimble. So people will go with that option. Also, lower bubble over the hand, less likely to have a hand hit called. Hopefully that helps a bit but please ask more if you like!

Well I was gonna go for the SP mittens because of the reasons you've listed above, and to me if gloves will provide at the very least same level of protection I'm willing to consider buying them. Now it'll all depend on if I'll have the money to spend on Gabriel 2.0, esp after buying rest of the gear (I'm a beginner, and relied on loan equipment for long enough). Either way, thank you very very much for a reply! I finally think I have gloves 100% figured out :)

Well, Gabriels are expensive, but at the moment might be easier to get than SG mittens, though you can order custom SGs and still be cheaper. If you have any other questions, do let me know!

Perhaps lines or a pattern, not just dots, then. That would be useful. So far I haven't had any problems with cord wrap or leather I've done myself when using the gloves, but I know some grips from manufacturers are tricky and could use gloves with better contact solutions. Of course, getting that tennis wrap tape they make could be a short term solution as well. Thanks for adding your feedback! It matters!

Hi! I made the handle. I had a plank of solid wood, sketched it out, and used a jigsaw to cut it out. Then I sanded it a lot, drilled pilot holes for the rivets, and added a light coat of oil. All because I had some scrap wood around.

We lack follow-ups in society, so I’m happy to provide my niche subject with some details. They are good gloves!
