Improvised Weapon for Games: The Crowbar
Ah yes, I can return to RUclipss as the renovation ends, and here’s a video about a great improvised weapon: It’s the Crowbar!
Whether you’re fighting head-crabs in Half-Life or assaulted by ghouls while trying to open a sarcophagus, this is a very handy tool that has three ways to deal out damage!
Join me as I briefly discuss the merits of this hunk of metal and keep it in mind for your next ttrpg experience, because it does pack a punch!

Six Months with Gabriel: a HEMA Gear Re-visit

After six months and a bit of using the Gabriel Gloves from CHFG, or whatever the business is called, I am still happy. My hip? Not so much. But physio and a break will fix that. So if you want to know how the gloves held up for six months of teaching every week and being smacked in the hands, tune in, and you'll see the answer is: very well.

    • @LaurenDangerShaw
      @LaurenDangerShaw 19 дней назад

      You can certainly learn basics from RUclips, and practice cuts, footwork, get your balance right and improve speed. So you can get into it and look good for solo work. But then it comes to this: Without someone watching to adjust the finer points, and someone to practice drills with so you have resistance to your attack or defence, there’s only so far you can go. Learning measure, appreciating proper level of force, and having someone ensure your feet are in the right position, or hands are held high enough for particular techniques, that needs someone else. But you could always try to find a few local people who share the interest, all of you watch the videos from the various HEMA people, and help coach one another. That’s probably the best path if there’s no club near you.

    Attention: Wehr can also mean weapon. A Seitenwehr is a sidearm, both bladed and pistol. Seitengewehr is german word for bayonnet ( but Bajonett is also used), a Kurzgewehr is one of the polearms used by 18th century officers or NCOs. In german rifles , shotguns and combined guns are called Gewehr as umbrella term. So when before 1800 in a german text Gewehr appears, it must not be a firearm.

    Hello .. I got one of these fully riveted 16 gauge round steel .. love it but it’s starting to go rusty.. I’m thinking of taking a wire brush with some WD40 to it.. is that a bit harsh?.. is there a better way to clean it?.. thanks

    • @LaurenDangerShaw
      @LaurenDangerShaw Месяц назад

      Hi! I’d probably use something other than WD-40. A 3-in-1 oil, or even leather care oils will be fine. While there are references to cleaning maille with sand, I have tried it and it takes forever to get all the grains out of the links si in modern times I don’t recommend it. When you get the shirt where you’d like it, an automotive care product like Autosol paste could be applied with a soft brush to finish the cleaning and help prevent rust, but be warned: all of this is messy work. Having a bin you can place the maille into and laying down a cloth is helpful. Dump out rust often, and when you oil and polish the armour, really shake and move it, and then seal it up with a towel (to absorb any moisture) You’ll need to wipe it down before wearing but it will look and smell much nicer for all the effort.

      Historically, the straight blades would be more common but it really comes down to what you like the look of. Wavy blades are cool, and let’s face it, greatswords require effort and training. I know the video is three years old already, so I'm not sure if my message will be seen (youtube being youtube); I'm also aware this could be a dumb, noobie question, but not asking would be even dumber: What tweaks would I need to do if I intend to create a Broom Rapier? A sharp, flat handguard looks painful with all the finger leverage needed... And actually adding the finger rings and/or some sort of cup guard would actually look awesome! (If at all possible)

    • @LaurenDangerShaw
      @LaurenDangerShaw 3 месяца назад

      Hi Arckanda! Old video but I have email alerts, plus there are no dumb questions!So let’s figure out a rapier. Handguard: you could get tennis tape or ice hockey tape, add some long strips aling the handle to build it up and change the shape, then wrap around in a spiral and that will make it comfortable. You could do a cup hilt, as that is easier. Take a cheap plastic bowl, slowly make a hole in the centre (don’t snap the plastic) and use that as the guard. Hot glue will hold it in place. If you’d prefer a metal bowl, you’ll need to drill the hole, and wrap tape on either side of where it will sit. You di the handle aide, slide down the bowl, then wrap the blade side. Now, if you want a cage hilt, that’s more work. Wire is needed, heavier the better, and then you can wrap that in tape, but likely you’ll have to re-shape it often. Hopefully that gives you a bit of inspiration and do ask more questions if you’d like!

    Hey Lauren, it’s nice to hear that you’re and your kitten feeling well. I live in Germany and like in England, self defense is not allowed. It’s not considered socially appropriate. You should call the police and with a little happiness they will come in 2 or 3 hours 😂. So I think the crowbar (here we call it cow foot) is a good option for home defense but not outside the own home. I keep one of them in my garage in the basement as a tool. In my flat I have enough wooden and edged weapons, so I don’t need this tool 😊

    I don't know, but seems to me a crowbar is pretty heavy for a normal person to swing, it's slow and top heavy, you risk getting disarmed. I'd rather go for thrusting, and get some extra reach by grapping the curved part with the back hand. This way, I get a quite safe hold of the bar plus a decent push blade for close striking on top

    • @LaurenDangerShaw
      @LaurenDangerShaw 3 месяца назад

      In the real world it’s not great, but I like the idea of treating it like a smallsword. Just a lot heavier, but mitigated with the grip position. Of course, this was mostly a game idea, fictional positioning. Because skeletons leaping out if the tomb you just pried open need a smack with the blunt edge. ;)

  • @knate44
    @knate44 3 месяца назад

    I hope you and Maya are doing well! Crowbars are neat but I have to say i think the standard sized ones are kind of the wrong size to be an ideal weapon. I think a smaller crowbar or tire iron would actually be more hand than ones like you see in half life or deus ex because they are heavy enough you'd want to use them in two hands, but in that case they are a bit short. In 5e I'd maybe maybe make it 1d6 2 handed because that's no longer a strength modifier, but then its still comparing to things like the great club which is 1d8 in two hands or a quarterstaff which is 1d6 in one hand, 1d8 in two it seems underwhelming because those are just sticks... Maybe if damage types are relevant it could do a mix of blunt and piercing damage from the chisel/beak ends? Also just so I have the chance to share it, my current dnd character is a cat boy shifter, basically part werecreature, so he can puff up into the intimidating beast form... Where upon he looks like man-sized a grompy orange Pallas's Cat, and his signature weapons are either a warhammer and shield, or a pair of light hammers he can throw and that magically bounce back to him. He calls them his bonking sticks, and i think more games need bonking options like that.

    How do Gabriel 2.0 compare to Sparring Gloves Mittens when it comes to protection? I've heard Sparring Gloves Mittens are not the most robust gloves on the market, so I've been wondering if any 5-finger gloves have caught up to them when it comes to protection? • @LaurenDangerShaw
      @LaurenDangerShaw 5 месяцев назад

      I had written a big long reply but I should keep this simple. In my opinion, Gabriels are about the same as SG mittens right now, with the exception that a pinky hit against SGs will be easier to take than against the Gabriels. If you are good at preventing most hand hits, Gabriels will be great. If you get hit in the hands a lot, bulkier clamshells are probably the way. HF Black Knights being top tier at the moment. Finally, as for why people use SG mitts over bulkier but more protective clamshells, it’s about mobility. Lower profile gloves let you have a better grip on the sword and be a bit more nimble. So people will go with that option. Also, lower bubble over the hand, less likely to have a hand hit called. Hopefully that helps a bit but please ask more if you like!

      @@LaurenDangerShaw Thank you for a very fast and precise reply! Well I was gonna go for the SP mittens because of the reasons you've listed above, and to me if gloves will provide at the very least same level of protection I'm willing to consider buying them. Now it'll all depend on if I'll have the money to spend on Gabriel 2.0, esp after buying rest of the gear (I'm a beginner, and relied on loan equipment for long enough). Either way, thank you very very much for a reply! I finally think I have gloves 100% figured out :)

      Well, Gabriels are expensive, but at the moment might be easier to get than SG mittens, though you can order custom SGs and still be cheaper. If you have any other questions, do let me know!

      Hi! I bought it from Darksword Armory when it was a clearance item. I’m not sure if they have any more like it. It is a bit large for my head, unfortunately, but it is still very cool.

    I just got the newest version about a week ago. I think so far the attribute that can be improved is the lack of grip the gloves provide. I think the grip of the glove needs to be just glove material so it can get broken in and not allow the sword to slide as easy, or have more grip material like a rubber that can lend to gripping weapons easier.

      Perhaps lines or a pattern, not just dots, then. That would be useful. So far I haven't had any problems with cord wrap or leather I've done myself when using the gloves, but I know some grips from manufacturers are tricky and could use gloves with better contact solutions. Of course, getting that tennis wrap tape they make could be a short term solution as well. Thanks for adding your feedback! It matters!

    Where do you get the handle?

    • @LaurenDangerShaw
      @LaurenDangerShaw 5 месяцев назад

      Hi! I made the handle. I had a plank of solid wood, sketched it out, and used a jigsaw to cut it out. Then I sanded it a lot, drilled pilot holes for the rivets, and added a light coat of oil. All because I had some scrap wood around.

    I haven't used my gabriels as long as you have, but they've been wonderful hand protection for arming sword. I've only had two really painful strikes, and one of the was from a bad block leading to me taking a swing with the underside of my hand, where not even mits would protect anyway. I have no regrets getting a pair, and will continue to swear by them

      Wooo hooray for the Gabriels fan club! I hope your hand wasn’t injured in that underside hit. Even with all the gear, nothing is perfect I suppose.

      @@LaurenDangerShaw It stung but didn't bruise, thankfully. A few minutes to let it subside was all it needed to get back into the swing of things

      Thank you! I am glad you wnjoyes the video. The necklace, ah yes, it was part of the Reddit secret Santa back when they still did that, so it was a gift from some random person! It has since broken so I expect it’s probably a less than $20 item from Amazon. Just a simple pewter sword pendant on a steel chain.

      Yes, as far as I can tell. Undergraduates would take a History BA program and then focus on Medieval Studies for graduate programs.
