'It Depends', the greatest HEMA answer ever.

Bwahahahaha I was trying so hard to say that as little as possible! But it’s so accurate! Everything is situational!!
      It all depends!

that’s how you know that the person knows their stuff! people who talk in absolutes make me suspicious.

Absolutely. There are no absolutes, everything is situational and everyone has things that work better for them or worse for them, so, it aaalllll depends.

I have to give that answer a lot. Context is key. Many times I can say, "it depends, but we're working on this topic, so this technique will probably work well. Play with it once you get your reps in and are comfortable with the basic scenario." This is clearly in a training sense, not a lecture sense.

Yes, that, exactly. I find the “Internet” would like one answer, one magazine click-bait headline of “one move that works every time” but we know it’s not like that. Thankfully, the absolute seekers are in Reddit and I just stay out of it.

This was really interesting! I don't know anything about HEMA, so I was surprised to hear that the edges would bind, or that anybody would actually do that arm-over-head point-down maneuver. Cool stuff!

I’m glad you liked it! Edges bite, flats slide. There’s a footwear joke in there I’m not willing to make.
But yes, the sword is as much about defence as offence, and being under it is like having an umbrella to use against raining steel.

You’re welcome and I am glad you liked it. Keeping the videos shorter and to the point is important to me, because time is precious! I do like to ramble and am working to prevent that.

Woo 3 years!! awesome! This reminded me of that video of the kenjitsu swordsman using a longsword for the first time and seeing what made sense and what didn't make sense. Something he mentioned though was that, to him, the crossguard would make more sense to be on the flats of the sword - because they block w/ the flats almost exclusively. and as you state here, if you want the sword to "skate off" then putting a hunk of metal at the end for a bind wouldn't make a lot of sense. where as if you *are* trying to bind (say, on the edge) it would make more sense to try another place for a bind ((in addition to the whole hand protection thing)). Anyway, great video as always! Happy American Thanksgiving!

Happy American Thanksgiving! I have to go watch the kenjitsu video, it’s overdue for me. As far as crossguards go, this is likely why we get complex hilts showing up, side rings and the like. Extra protection for all directions!
Three years, feels like less. Huh.

Thanks, Moustache! I thought an update and combining the two into a video was needed, and we just went over it in class so it was on my mind!

Thank you! Glad you liked it. Also, it is indeed Landsknecht Emporium! I have a sharp and blunt Gottfried, and they’re both fantastic.
