- Whether it’s the holiday season or any time of year, the safety of your fingers is really quite dear!
I was supposed to record this last week but life was in the way, so here we go, some basic knife safety tips for the kitchen, just in time for a festive Yule!
To sum up: sharp knives are safer than dull knives, curl your fingers under when slicing, have a knife with a good bolster or curve on the handle at the blade, and point your thumb instead of the finger when trying to get more precision.

Great advice. One further suggestion: after nearly slicing the tip off my index finger last year, I bought a pair of Kevlar cut-proof gloves, which I now wear whenever wielding sharp cutty objects in the kitchen (including the viciously razor-sharp mandoline). Since then, I've never cut myself, except once, two weeks ago, when I foolishly used a carving knife to open a plastic bag of chips (not wearing said gloves).
Oo yes a kevlar glove, or even some butcher’s mail gloves. The ultimate tip for saving your tips.
Scissors might be helpful for the next bag of chips…
That is quite the knife! 😮
I dont think I've even seen a knife cut through bread that smoothly
Well, it was forged just for me and can be made super sharp. So it is smooth on a bagel slice with very few crumbs!
A professional instructor for cooks taught me the same hand position for avoiding injuries. It works well. Sharp knives still can draw blood. An ERT colleague cut himself using my razor sharp Victorinox while cutting open a bread roll. Luckily he did not need stitches. Surgeons tend to say that cuts from sharp knives heal better though.
One of my pet peeves is when people give dull knives to children so they don´t cut themselves. Give them a sharp knife and teach them how to use it. I volunteer to sharpen the knife and provide training if the parents lack the skill.
Very good of you to provide the training, and yes, kids should learn to be responsible with sharp knives, not frivolous with dull ones that breed bad habits.
sharp knives are safer than dull ones. I've told people that before and they look flummoxed. However, t is a very good ....... point
Flummoxed until they force a dull knife through a carrot and have an injury…
Bonus points for the pun. Haha.
