  • I am overdue in posting this one because I rambled too much, deleted everything, and then life kept me from recording a more concise version.
But here it is: My PSA about knee health for martial arts.

OMQ!!!!! I thought you had stopped doing your amazing vids, for some reason I hadn't seen them in Mt feed. I'm sooooo glad you are still on YT. ALSO thnx for talking about these very important basics, most people don't realize they are messing themselves because of poor basics

I am still around! Videos won’t be so regular for a few months but there’s a video about that for tomorrow. As for basics, you are right, people do mess themselves up because of poor basics. Always glad to share what I can to promote healthy joints!

This is one of the most important things to remember to increase your fencing longevity. Thanks for making this one

Most welcome! Knee injuries are awful so I am sure it was overdue for a discussion.

Haha I am the same except I say damn. I want it on a shirt I can wear to class so everyone remembers.

Good stuff and important! Nice shoutout to Mariana Lopez as well. I was at an event and did a couple workshops with her, they were excellent.

Forever important to watch our knees and shoutout amazing people like Mariana. I’ve only chatted over Zoom and not met her in person, but it is a goal to be zany with her in person one day.

Great stuff, as always.. Any thought about simple strength training tips for older folks? (I'm in my 60's 😴) I noticed the Messer off to the side, any plans for Messer content? I have been bitten by the Messer bug , and crave as much as I can find. Thanks again...

Hey Doc! I hope all is well. Strength training for older folks? Well, a few tips. I’m not the expert on that but I know you can build a gentler program that has more reps. So instead of pushing yourself for twenty minutes and possibly injuring something, lower weights and more reps with bigger breaks in between can help. So maybe ten minutes, break for five, ten minutes, break for five, and ten minutes. Takes longer but less wear amd tear. Repetition builds results,
Also think about support, so squats can be done with one hand gently pressed on a kitchen counter, helping maintain balance and form.
That’s all I have off the top of my head. Hopefully it helps!
As for messer, it’s more likely I’ll do something on Poleaxes in the fall before I get around to messer content, unfortunately. But we will see what I can get up to, reading wise!

This is the number one thing that I really think most HEMA groups need to work to take care of. I cringe at the number of collapsed knees and turned feet that I see in online videos.

Yes! Exactly! I’ve been adding more and more reminders to classes to relax and manage posture, alignment, all of that, to prevent injury. Habits for life extend our life in the hobby!
