  • This week it's more advice for your sword fighting moves as I look at the finer details of winding. That means when you are in the bind with an opposing blade, you both slide and turn your sword to displace the opponent and create an opportunity for you to attack!

Love these little technique videos, they help me add little historical details when describing combat in D&D. Thanks for all you do!

I studied Eishin Ryu Iaido on my university campus for a couple years and your statement of 'economy of movement' is a striking parallel with what was drilled into us in the dojo: no unnecessary movement and certainly no flashy Hollywood techniques!

Exactly! Iaido knows what works. ;) Hollywood flashiness can go in the bin. Amazing that martial arts from all over the world show the same things like breathing and economy of movement and so on. It’s fascinating to me.

Another solid video, can't wait until I can try that out when I next do longsword.
As for video requests, I know you touched on it a bit with squats, but what about doing a video about what excercies you can do that will help you when fighting? I'm not much of a workout junkie even though I know it is good for me, but if I'm exercising so I can fence for longer and reduce chances of injury I'm much more likely to stick with it.

Ooo, exercises for HEMA, that’s a fantastic idea! If all goes well I’ll record that next week! Essentially run through the warmup routine I use in classes. All of it done while holding the sword, of course.

When I was younger I was hardcore, I did 100 squats a day.

100? That is hardcore. My knees say 20 is my max these days.

Swords and ice weather go good together, don't they? The bitter wind flows through the air, a reminder that castles of old weren't truly all that warm. And neither is the blade, cold and sharp but was forged out of flame. All great things must go through fire, at some point or another.

English is an interesting language. Haha. All things must go through fire and in the end all turns to cold ash. Such is the nature of the Universe.

@@LaurenDangerShaw Well if you look at it technically, things get created via energy, and energy is heat. When things decay, they go back to not having energy, just specks and particles of a element. Whether it be metal, or carbon, or water. Just specks.
Things react and melt to different amounts of energy.
