The C Class transplant from Crossley ESTVee8 of 550 HP at 1000 RPM to EMD 8 645E engine at 900 RPM and 1100 HP. The existing Metro-Vick traction motors and generators were recognised as robust and retained in the rebuild. When built, these locomotives were numbered C201-C234, and as locomotives were re-engined, they were renumbered B201-B234 to reflect their increased Converted to four-car push...
The A Class transplant from Crossley HSTV8 to 12 cylinder EMD 645E engine

The A Class transplant was carried out between 1968 and 1971 at Diesel 1 Inchicore Initially they were fitted with eight-cylinder two-stroke Crossley HSTV8 They produced 890 kW (1,200 hp) at 625 rpm and could do 120 km/h (75 mph Their Crossley engines proved to be notoriously unreliable from the start. Amongst a plethora of problems were: Unbalanced engines resulting in vibration-induced fuel p...

The trains wer massive back den ... brilliant video
Nice to see the work on the A-class explained, the original layout has many similarities with the class 28 Co-Bo where i have been doing some work on. The Crossley engine are pretty massive in size, and are very rare now. It took years to find a spare engine for a swap or for parts. In the end we only found a V-12 which of course doesn't fit in the locomotive, but many of the parts such as heads, pistons, liners and conrods were reusable to repair the original engine. It was very unusual as it was a valveless 2 stroke diesel, where most others like EMD, Detroit and the Russian 14D40 in the M62 had exhaust valves in the head and intake ports at the bottom of the cylinder to make them uniflow (fresh air enters from the bottom and exits at the top of the cylinder). The term valveless not completely true as they have reed valves in the intake to prevent exhaust gasses being pushed back in the intake, just like on a dirtbike engine. The cleaning and repair of those reed valves is an immense job in itself. Otherwise you would mainly find opposed piston engines like the Rootes TS3, Deltic or Fairbanks Morse as valveless designs where the use of 2 pistons per cylinder enabled a uniflow design. The Crossley was a cross flow (air enters and exits trough ports in the bottom half of the cylinder) engine which had poor scavenging as it did not have the separate exhaust and intake strokes of a four stroke clearing the entire length of the cylinder, even the large blower did not improve this much. By the way, you called them turbos in one of the pictures of the EMD engines, but they were not. They are mechanically driven roots blowers with 2 interlocking 8 shaped rotors creating mechanical displacement of air, and to provide no overboost but create an airflow trough the engine when intake and exhaust are open, this because of the missing separate exhaust and intake strokes on a two stroke which do normally pump gasses out and suck air in on the four stroke.
Thank you very much for your most interesting comment a lot of technical information on both the Crossley and GM engines.
Wow .....
Beautiful sound sad ☹️ not to see these Canadian /American bad boys on the tracks again and sent to the train graveyard
7:36 6:19
Wonderful. The best trains ever in Ireland, if anywhere. That sound rouses the soul. I recall those big locos gunning up out of Belfast when I lived off the Lisburn Road a long time ago. I always had my window opened at the bottom of Dunluce Avenue so that the Dublin express would be my alarm call in the morning. Magnificent machines and so glad to see them alive and well today!
Glad you enjoyed it
Whats the grey wagon at 4.09 in the middle of the sugar beet train? Maybe calibration of weighing equipment?
That wagon was a prototype for beet haulage but never happen
@gerryconmy thanks a million , never seen one before
Soon to be re created
I used to work this route on the dining car in 1977. Back then it was hauled by double-headed single cab Class 121s. It was 60-70 mph more or less throughout, regardless of the official limit 😉! On the sharp curves alongside the canal, the cups and saucers would be flying! Used to also work the Galway mail via Mullingar and Moate through Connolly all the way down to Dun Laoghaire pier. Very tight confines in that old station, barely enough room for the Class A to do the turnaround. Memories of a different time indeed.....
Yes they were the days when it was a pleasure to work the trains. Then health and safety took over. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video.
Nice video Gerry :)
Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video I made a long time ago.
At what point does the train cross the ROI-NI border?
Between Dundalk and Newary at the 59.5 mile post.
@gerryconmy Really these system is unacceptable today with modern HST in europe and HS1 yes theve put better trains on but thd enterprise is clapped out there needs to be electrifying lines from B to D and the latest fastest trains I dog think a HS line will built as anything does the irish peasants. 😮
It's time for some slow youtube.
Was Denis in the cab at all?
So whats wrong with the 22000 series loco? They sure look great...i was on one last July ex Cork
4:01 I don’t know what it is, but cab view videos on railways are so relaxing to watch ❤❤❤❤
My Grandfather on my Dad’s side worked in the CIE railway engineering works in Inchicore and he lived on the Canal Banks between Coolemine Level Crossing and Clonsilla Station on the Dublin - Sligo line - as a child in the 1970’s, I vaguely remember Mrs Byrne on the Coolemine Level Crossing and my Granny used to say that the trains in those days were so punctual that you could set your watch by them, even freight trains and special trains - I got the impression that Mrs Byrne would have shared timetable information with my granny back then too
If those coaches were still in service, I think that this would have been a most comfortable and pleasant journey from Dublin to Sligo, having arrived from Manchester via Holyhead ❤❤❤
Yes the Craven carriages were the best to travel on and are still used on RPSI trains. Thank you for your comments.
Very nice video :)
Oh how i miss doing a Dart day ranger bagging a dozen or so locos a day in the process
What a truly superb sight !

Eire of the 90's. A country that doesn't exist anymore. Great video, passed some places where I walked and grew up (Ashtown). Nice to see the perspective from the cab, always loved hearing and seeing the 071s roar past, always got a wave from the drivers.
Thanks again Gerry. A grand locomotive. That one'll have the GM V12 in it there? Cheers now!
Lovely video, I was at laytown in September 2003 and there was no signal cabin. What year was this beautiful cabin discontinued
The best footage I've seen in years, I love the intercity trains
Loved the video, what was that sign for at 1:34:14? Cheers
That's a fixed distant signal
Connolly now only a shadow of its former self I spent a lot of time around there in the late 80s
Its like a ghost town now. Nothing like it was.
The first view is of an 141, BR Mark 1 and two Park Royals on the Rosslare to Waterford, seen west of the Barrow Bridge. Hard to think of this line being closed, which was very stupid, considering two Waterford and one Limerick passenger trains per day and all that sugar beet traffic from Bridgeton / Wellington Bridge when in season. For generations living in Limerick, Cork etc. this line was THE way to Fishguard and London. Loved the steam heat, the Cravens were good, the Park Royals were better, and the CIE coaches were an experience and a half ! 132 stranded at Thomastown, had derailed with a seized traction motor, to be withdrawn after being wheelskated to Inchicore. 132 was one of only two 121s I missed for hauled (her plus 125). My wife and I saw her on a push pull set from Drogheda. We waited 3.5 hours at Howth Junction in the horizontal rain for her to work north, but there was no sign of her. We checked Dublin Connolly and she was not there either. We found her at Dublin Pearce not due back out for hours, so we left. Had several 001 A Class, all the 071s + 111s (which were my favourites), most 141s, 181s, and new 201s, plus one Hunslet 101, number 102 in Belfast. Happy days when "real railways" had locos, steam heat, single line tokens, mechanical semaphore signalling, and coaches you could lean your head out of ! Great video. Thanks for posting. Alas I never got a cabride in Ireland. But managed it in Blighty over 350 times, plus France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Canada and even drive a train in Hungary !
Thank you for your comment, very interesting information great reading, you really know your railways.
Thank you for your kind complement. I try my best. As well as being a life member of ITG, professionally I was the National Operations Standards Manager, now retired in charge of railway operations England, Wales and Scotland. I also did EU directives into UK law for railway operations. Any questions, always happy to help.
Hey. Can I please use some of your footage in my films? I will credit you for it.
Lovely job
the 2600s are now having there gangways removed so now... They look like 2800s
A single 121 used to struggle on a 6 coach Mark 3 push pull set. I had them to Drogheda. I think the single 121 was better suited to working a 3 coach Mark 3 push pull set on the Limerick shuttle. Anyway, far better than a kart (DMU).
I remember pairs of 121s on the Sligo line. Preferred 071s !
The crew chit chat is what makes these videos!!!!!!!! It's nice to hear people happy and having a bit of banter and craic! I think it's against the rules now!
Do you have a video with lots of Metrovicks?
Excellent!
Many thanks!
I see the late great Jimmy Maher in the background serving tea and coffee at 19:35
And a van at either end of the cravens with Merlin in the first clip why is that she is only pulling 6 coaches? Maybe to do with the route or what they could get on the day. I looked later at the video made sense. Also nice catch of 461 and 85 double heading I do wish was able to have seen Irish double heading but the videos are just as good.
I got my Murphy models mk 2ds this week in ir livery love them. Bring back memories. And got the whole Galway set
Another fabulous video , thanks for posting it here. Cheers
Beautiful video
Lovely video, those bell containers bring back memories of them in Limerick yard
How many steam locomotives are still in use in Germany?
Fantastic upload, cheers
Indeed..re my own then local Irish station (Skerries), the old underpass was still in use. Now that exit is closed and the overhead walkway (+ lifts) apply at this stop.
What speed did they do in those days
From Ballina to Manulla Junction was 50 mph. From Manulla to Claremorris was 60 mph. 60 was the max speed main line except Dublin Cork was 70 mph.
@@gerryconmy thanks for the reply
