The way I understood Aoi not believing in true desires: She says people think of a true desire as "what they think is best for them (in that moment)", however, they might not know what is best for them, so those desire essentially become worthless misunderstandings of what one thinks is "best". According to her, one should instead aspire to follow what is objectively best for oneself. She also believes that what is objectively best for her, is to climb the social ladder and to do that, she hides her true self under a mask, while she views her "true desires" that she may have as distractions from that ultimate goal, which wouldn't actually get her to what's best for her. As for why specifically she thinks that way, that's something we find out in later seasons (or in the light novel maybe). And yes that would explain why one shouldn't follow their true desires, and not why they don't exist, but I think the mere fact, that they're a misunderstanding of whats best for someone makes them "not a real thing". It feels a bit as though you're arguing against the wording of it, like, maybe her definition of a "true desire" is that it's not only something you really, really want but something that also has to be fundamentally good for your life. So the fact that a true desire in her eyes is a misunderstanding of what is fundamentally good, immediately disqualifies it as being real. "So wouldn't it mean that true desires that are truly good would exist?" Yes, maybe. Maybe she sees her striving for social status as a true desire but doesn't wanna call it that. She's as a high schooler lol. I think its ok for her to have huge flaws in her logic, while it can still be believable for her to think that way. I just think it is possible to make sense of why she thinks that way, even though the explanation is a bit lacking. (Like I said, its probably explained in further detail in the following light novels.) Maybe I'm just trying to find an explanation for myself, cuz I like the anime, but idk, I think it does kinda make sense (even though I can't explain it properly). Edit: ok lol, I should've watched till the end cuz u explained what I meant. But I think it's not wrong for her to distil all of those beliefs into a simple "true desires don't exist", when she's explaining it to Fumiya, since I think just saying "true desires don't exist, just do what's objectively best / what would objectively make you happy" kinda capture all of that without that long explanation. And while watching this is exactly what I was thinking, not that she actually didn't believe in true desires. I mean, we often don't mean things exactly the way we say them, and especially when what we mean is long, and can be captured in a much shorter and straight forward way, even if that way isn't really exactly how we mean it. (Cuz for all intents and purposes, it would mean the same to Fumiya whether it's the long or the short explanation, the point of the whole line was "do whats objectively best for u".) and the thing is, like i said, i assumed that that all that was the case the moment i heard the line and gave it a bit of thought, its not like this takes some insane mental gymnastics to reach. cuz obviously she didn't mean that desires actually don't exist, and that's just the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of how else she could've meant it. (it takes quite a bit of time to put into words tho lol (but like i said, that's exactly why she didn't put it into words but just said "desires don't exist", idk why you have such a big problem with accepting that she didn't mean what she said, that's completely normal, especially for someone like Aoi.))

The author themself jokes about the obvious gay tension all of Mahiro's friends have towards her in the manga, lol. There's always this "yuri love triangle" with Mahiro being the victim of the loli lesbians in her area. But it's also made very obvious that if there's gonna be a hook up, it'll be with Momiji. Miyo literally talks about Mahiro's compatibility with the others in a chapter in the manga, and she also says that Momiji is the number one pick. The manga also shares a fan-made piss-counter, btw. I'm pretty sure it was Mahiro: 8 (mf, are you incontinent?) Momiji: 3 Ahiro: 1 Himari: 1 Kaede: 1 (I don’t remember when the adults pissed their pants, but it's on the piss counter, sooo) (Also, the Mahiro piss-count might’ve gone up after that, too. I'm not 100% sure tho.) Oh yeah, and (at least in the manga) Mahiro is also really uncomfortable when she remembers she's technically a grown man getting intimate with high schoolers, so at least the author knows it's funky lmfao. It's definitely great. Peak slice of life in my personal opinion. I rate it a wet floor/10

Also while Saitama does join the hero association and is slowly rising up the ranks, it's never stated by him to be for anything other than getting famous.

In entertainment and literature, we know about the flat/round and static/dynamic character. Most of the time, the main character is going to be round and dynamic. Someone who is a very well-rounded character with plenty of fleshed out traits and motives, and someone who changes throughout the story, or at least has an implied change in their character in their past. Ironically, Mashle is one of the only characters who is completely both flat and static. Someone who is basically one-dimensional AND doesn't really have any change throughout the show. Funny enough, in One Punch Man and Mob Psycho, both of which are very close in tone and style of writing, Saitama can actually be interpreted as dynamic, as it's implied that he *used* to take his strength more seriously by working out a ton, while Mob is most definitely dynamic, given his change from a quiet, shy, and introverted boy who feared his powers to the point of repressing his emotions, to someone who embraced those emotions and powers without sacrificing his kindness. Mashle never actually changes at all. He has a strong sense of justice, he is heavily family-oriented, loves cream puffs to the point some people think that's his actual magical powers, and will bulldoze his way through any problem, no matter what. He doesn't have any particular underlying reason to do what he does ("Why do I work out so much? I mean... I see a dumbbell in front of me, and I figure I should work out.") It's rare for people to focus on a flat and static main character, and even rarer for that main character to actually be appealing to the audience. To make up for this lack of development, Mashle (as well as Mob Psycho and One Punch Man) forces the WORLD around them to be round and dynamic. For each world, there's so much to be said about their setup, and there's so much to be said about how that world changes its worldview simply by having the main character be there and so absurdly strong that it completely and utterly destroys any preconceived notions. For Mashle, a world that relies on the motto "Magic makes might" becomes upset when a non-magic person is regularly defeating the strongest wizards and witches. For Mob, him being so strong yet so kind goes against the worldview that most other espers hold that having psychic powers entitles them to the world. I haven't seen One Punch Man, but I presume that something similar takes place in that world as well, that a preconceived notion of strength is utterly destroyed by Saitama simply being there. I would love to actually see more of this sort of trope in future works from other artists. One idea that would be cool to explore would be an Isekai where someone who has an absurd amount of power from their previous world is truck-kuned into another world where power is common, but the main character is utterly OP that there is no actual power struggle. Instead, any normal struggle the character would normally face is mitigated by the fact that they're OP, and any struggle would actually come from within (man vs self) rather than outside (man vs world).
