    I think the low tension and the predictable outcome are the appeal of this show. Some people will feel acomplished after a expected ending.

      my problems with the show have nothing to do with low tension and predictable outcomes. im a huge fan of shows like azumanga daioh, lucky star, gabriel dropout--- my profile picture is literally tohru from dragon maid and that show has very little plot a lot of the time.

      @@MemoGGG16 i make that exact point in the video.
      "I’ve heard from other people that there’s a distinct appeal to shows with slow pacing and incredibly naturalistic, albeit sparsely packed dialogue, with simple characters who make equally simple, life-like jokes to each other, where the punchlines aren’t zany and out there but rather fluffy and decidedly not bombastic, often with a thematic emphasis on friendship and cooperation. There’s a distinct appeal to shows meant to relax the mind in this particular way." - near the end of the script somewhere idk im too lazy to timestamp

    Do It Yourself is Iyashikei - "healing anime". Most iyashikei is just like this. It "heals" by way of making something low-conflict, on purpose. Of course what does and doesn't quality as "healing anime" varies person to person. But the root idea is that this is something you watch after a bad day, not something you watch every day (unless your life is a living hell I guess?). In that respect, too much complexity would actually damage the idealism the show requires to function. Granted, I agree that the show got more boring as it advanced. I just understand why it is the way it is.
    Also, can I just say, listening to Jobko speak """fluent""" English was very enjoyable.

    Even as someone who absolutely adores this show, I just can't get mad at this video. For one: you make good points that I never would've considered, and you don't seem like you're trying to be a hater, but rather have an actual dialogue about it. Your tone of voice and consistent visual jokes keep it all light-hearted and the things you brought up helped me better understand the show I love and *why* I love it. I will say though, I think it's funnier than you give it credit for, I especially love every time Jobko speaks English in her clearly Japanese accent (Maybe only accidentally funny, but whatevs).

    Not sure if this was planned or just something that the theme of this video drew out in the scripting process, but I found it amusing that you constantly interrupted the flow of the video to refer back to Nisioisin as if you're presenting a character card of your own: "Enjoys and/or permanently scarred by the literary works of that author known as Nisioisin".
    On that note: the script overall was really solid, so props for the good judgement in recruiting Vlusky to vett it and help with revisions -- I'll make sure to check out his channel soon.

    Your video is so interesting to me, Because we are talking about same show and the observation on this show is very similar, but the opinions on that is quiet opposite.
    In my view, Theme of DIY or its answer/solution are just shallow and lame. It doesn`t really think about technology and what technology would bring to us. Tools are made by people, but tools also mold people`s perception toward the world. For example, Even if you write an essay about same thing, Your hand-writing one on papers and typing one on word program would be different. Because editing process will be changed, and how you can reference things will be changed, your time and choice about words will be changed. So I am just "meh" on DIY`s conclusion. Maybe you can make a tree house with friends even A.I. surpass human level, but its structure or its placement will be very different from present one.
    What I enjoyed in this show were conversations. I agree that it is not that dramatic, but I feel it as comfort. This feeling with yua`s personality got accepted by others is why I loved this show. Yua`s head is always on clouds, she is easily distracted, and sometimes annoys others because of that traits. But even though all her flaws, Everyone else slowly accepts or understands who Yua is, and cooperate with her and make her grown up.
    Although I agree that jokes do not land most of time or one-off.
    Finally, To me, This work is anime so it was not boring if animation itself is good. You portray animation as just "nice", but I see animation so much beautiful! And the comfort feeling which I described above helps to focus on that aspect.
    In conclusion, This was a good show with some flaws imo, But it didn`t work for / click with you. Of course, I will not & I can not deny what you felt nor force to make you like this show. I just answer why I thought this show as good, and this video make me think how diverse audiences` take can be, even though they "clearly" see what the show is.

    It’s kind of funny how you kept mentioning Nisioisin because Monogatari is my favourite piece of media but I’m also a fan of Iyashikei and thoroughly enjoyed DIY. I don’t think being able to appreciate complex and intricately written characters and being charmed by and getting invested in simpler and less nuanced ones is necessarily mutually exclusive.

    • @Crunchybagels
      @Crunchybagels  Год назад +3

      no, they are not mutually exclusive. i'm a huge fan of shows like azumanga daioh, lucky star, and nichijou, which are far simpler than nisio isin's writing. diy's dialogue just doesnt have enough appeal to people like me to compensate for it, whereas the three shows i listed are either hilarious and/or just have more fun characters

    • @mrsputum4082
      @mrsputum4082 Год назад +2

      @@Crunchybagels yeah, I guess I worded that poorly. It reads as too standoffish, especially since you never claimed to only get invested in super complex characters.
      I guess my enjoyment of Iyashikei series doesn’t entirely hinge on the quality of the writing alone. I feel that with Iyashikei, other aspects like the world, the art and especially the atmosphere make up a comparatively far greater part of my enjoyment than they do with for example dramas or comedies where the focus definitely lies on the characters and their interactions.
      But maybe I’m just getting defensive because the man in the video said a meany word about that thing I like. To be honest, I have no intellectually sound justification for liking these shows as much as I do. Fact is, they make me feel warm and fuzzy inside and put a smile on my face. I find the characters cute and charming, so I like them. It might honestly not be much deeper than that. When I’m watching an Iyashikei show I’m not looking to be intellectually, but rather emotionally engaged. I’m a sentimental person and it’s peak escapism for me.
      I used to be extremely anal about the objective quality of everything I watched with an average MAL score of 5.something and not a single 10/10 but I noticed how that kind of mindset just made me bitter and perpetually dissatisfied so I stopped caring so much about my perception of myself as having high standards, as well as giving everything numerical ratings and now I’m just glad that some pieces of art can make me happy and if they manage to do that, they must be of some merit, even if they have objective flaws.

      @@mrsputum4082 nah ur original comment was fine and the elaboration was even finer. i do sorta skip over this, but yeah, i can see why with its unique animation and art style, diy's atmosphere would be very easy to be entranced by, although personally i resonate far more with other atmospheres of other shows

The one between Purin (Miku) and Serufu when they lost literally all of their work in progress wasnt pushed enough like omg... please flash out the character..... it was a good example of that but there are a lot more

    The characters interaction arent about anything or particularly interesting... unless you are a huge DIY nerd or want to get into it". I am neither of those." Theres the problem. Its you, not the show. This sentence should be in the title. Oh course you are not going to find interest in something when you have no interest in the subject. The sentence is presented off handed and not a particular big reason but this is perhaps the biggest reason why you found it bring, you have littler experience and knowledge, therefore desire, of woodcraft handcraft, or building so you cant relate to this show. You completely threw out the notion of DIY, building. and related, the core premise of the show, and talked about what remained of the show. This is akin of taking out the skeleton of human body and talking about what a human looks like, without a skeleton you would just be a lump flesh with nothing to hold it upright. I am an electrician and have my own shop in my garage and run a shitty etsy shop of selling wood crafts things I make and I found this show interesting.
