As a member of the Isaac community, Nicalis sucks for us too, so much so that it could've doubled the length of their segment in the video: - The DLC for Isaac are more like paid updates, each one has to be gotten in sequential order, and these DLCs also contain bug fixes and balance changes for game content. The number of actual regular updates in the game's history is low for having existed for 10 years. - The DLC Afterbirth+ was essentially made entirely by Nicalis, and promised official mod support along with its new content. On release day, it was an absolute mess, many of the items added were subpar, the new "Portal" enemy was unbalanced, and the major boss they added was essentially just the AI of already existing bosses held together with sticks and tape; it didn't even have an idle animation on release. The modding tools they promised were missing features the community would've wanted, and example mods they provided didn't even work. - Recently they've been making public alpha tests for a free online co-op update (something actually decent for once?) but one of their alphas was for the wave-based alternate game mode, Greed Mode, which people generally disliked compared to the original game. One person datamined the code for the previous alpha's normal mode co-op, sharing their findings, and this was enough for the co-op alphas to stop, since "one person ruined it for everyone else".

Small correction because slander to the grandpa of indie games is treason of the highest order: Nicalis did not make Cave Story, it was made by Daisuke Amaya over the course of a few years and released for free, whereas Nicalis bought the rights to it and made remasters and updates
Personally, I would add "Freebird Games" to the most loved, purely due to the level of storytelling in their few games. Definitely worthy of their cult following. Yes, I'm mainly pointing them out, solely because their games need more attention, and if more people experience the story, that would be great. I'm also rewatching some playthroughs of the most recent game, and still get emotional because of it.
Dunno if anyone has said this yet: Hollow Knight fans are (or, have been) going through what we Metroid fans did with Prime 4. Not to say I haven't followed suit myself. I'll have to admit, I have yet to play Hollow Knight at all. But I digress. If Silksong is still absent beyond the speculated time of late Fall this year (so I've seen/heard), I'd give it another two years for that prime (no pun intended) 7-year absence.
I would compare it more towards Cuphead. The game went through a long production period and took forever to release. It’s still a great game, but it still went as long.
@mantis638 Oh, right! I forgot that also took a long time to make. Although it's funny to think that the highly anticipated and soon-to-be successful games took/take the longest to make. (It's like they put genuine care into making it...)

Somewhere on a hard drive that still runs XP, I still have my original freeware installation of Cave Story. It honestly pisses me off how poorly Nicalis handled Cave Story, that was THE original indie dev game that arguably kicked off a new age of indie games, it's legacy should be something so much better than crap ports and mismanagement causing it to fade from memory.
The funny part about Re-Logic and Terraria is I think they genuinely believe themselves every time. Every time they put out a new update they go “okay, this’ll be the last one,” but then Ashley from the art team pipes up with a cool new idea and then they have to release another one.
I'm not sure I buy Team Cherry's explanation, and this is coming from someone who isn't a massive HK fan whose waiting with bated breath for Silksong (I enjoyed HK, it just wasn't my favorite metroidvania of all time). I can understand that dev logs aren't for everyone but the idea that dropping an occasional update is going to delay the game *F O R E V E R* just seems disingenuous when plenty of devs drop dev logs and get their product out in a reasonable amount of time. Even if it were true, updating the fans once or twice a year just seems to be a good faith gesture when you take as long as they have at this point. You don't even have to go into extreme detail, just a nod and a wink that things haven't gone terribly wrong.
That's because all the people complaining about their game moved on from slow decade waiting for npcs update they promised. All that's left is shills and devs teasing said chills with pictures for an update that would come out in two years lol
Can't believe you didn't mention Concerned Ape from Stardew Valley (and upcoming Haunted Chocolatier) who continues to release free updates for a game that came out in 2016. He's only 1 guy who does this for the love and passion of his game.
Thought they got cancelled for firing a random female employee because incells didn’t like that a male artist didn’t draw one of the characters in a bikini
Personally, what I think makes Re-Logic such a loved studio is how connected they are with their community, several features in the game are based of concepts, ideas or suggestions of fans, if not just, what the fans said they wanted. The best example of this was the 1.4.4 update which was almost completely just qol changes and fan additions, on top of fresh new content too. New items, weapons, blocks, seeds, features, like, there was so much content added for a relatively small update (when compared to the likes of 1.4 or 1.3) that everyone had something to be happy about, not to mention how they are very attentive to feedback, always looking for ways to improve the game, even in things that may already be good. Another great thing about them, is that they fully support modding, even integrating it as a part of the game (with tmodloader), that allowed hardcore fans to make huge projects to change the game on their own way, with some mods rivaling the vanilla game in how much content they have. Them being clear with development also helps keep the fans excited and in the loop of what's to come, with things such as occasional spoilers or the monthly state of the game being a few examples. They're always pushing themselves to make an already great game the best they can make it and that's a very respectable trait of them did I mention I like terraria?
Hollow knight went from a game I heard very little about, to wanting to learn everything about it and being obsessed in a week, one of the greatest games I’ve played, up there with Bloodborne and bioshock 2

you should make a video about small indie studios (1-4 people) that have made very impressive stuff like rain world having extremely impressive creature AI and ADOM that has extremely many things to do
Gotta admit. I had no idea about any of that stuff regarding Nicalis. Cave Story was one of those little games I saw on the Wii Shop that was pretty cheap and I had a couple bucks left, it looked kinda fun, I liked the music I was hearing, and I thought I'd take a gamble. Turned out to be one of the most enjoyable games I'd ever played, and REALLY got me into indie games. Sad to hear the company I got it from was shite, especially now after getting the 3DS version and such after years. Love the game, hate the owner, I guess. I'd always kinda wanted more out of that title. Some continuation of plot or something. I always felt like Quote and Curly could have had more adventures, new places to explore, weapons to find. As a big fan of sprite-based games, it was right up my alley. And hey, if it became something more 3D, that's fine too (Curly's cute). It just had such a unique "world" to it (despite only seeing the one floating island). That lore could have been expanded on. I guess that's just the way of older games.
You shouldve added zeekerss to the video, the only bad reviews on steam are reviews to either tell you to stop looking at the bad reviews or just joke reviews
I would say an honorable mention has to be Kupo Games. If you don't know, that's the maker of the Epic Battle Fantasy series, which was previously on Flash, but has been ported to Steam and Mobile in the recent times. It's an amazing RPG with great music, and they interact with the community fairly often.
Not mentioning Digital Extremes almost feels like a crime (?) Cool video, as a fan of Cave Story since release i HATE Nicalis so much, not only they release a rushed version for Wii, but BOTCHED the first remaster... to this day you can't play the Time Trials because there's a bug that, the moment you open the leaderboards of that mode the game crash... that shouldn't be a problem unless YOU ARE FORCED TO OPEN THE LEADERBOARDS AFTER FINISHING A RUN (also, there's a couple of achievements that don't work) the worst part is that one guy released a mod that fixes everything a couple of years after the original release but Nicalis never fixed that
I have mentioned SCS in a few comments before but they are a smaller dev studio that really only make truck sims but they have been making loads of good content both American Truck Sim and Euro Truck sim. The fact thst they get dlc out for each state or country out at a rapid pace and have hidden details and roads in them id great plus when they add trucks to the game they are often free. Plus like Relogic they fully support mods too as well as VR for even more in depth gameplay its a great game to just hop in the cabin of a truck and just roam which ever region you want too
What I have always loved about Re logic is that you just feel that terraria is a passion project for all of them. The Game and community just means that mutch to them and thats why they keep coming back for more updates and also honour the fans by letting them design vanity items or adding eastereggs to various youtubers. They also openly support moddig to the point off officially endorsing the modlauncher and offering jobs to modders

I love how war thunder is the sponsor for this video. The game is famous for its developer caring more about profits than the state of the game and quite often ignoring the community instead of listening to their community's suggestions on how to improve the game.

Also, Cult of the Lamb narratively-wise it’s a action folk horror comedy too.
Horror?
@@Its_A_Real_Goose Seemly and most undeniably yes. As a member of the Isaac community, Nicalis sucks for us too, so much so that it could've doubled the length of their segment in the video:
- The DLC for Isaac are more like paid updates, each one has to be gotten in sequential order, and these DLCs also contain bug fixes and balance changes for game content.
Nicalis just leeched off studio Pixel's work.

Personally, I would add "Freebird Games" to the most loved, purely due to the level of storytelling in their few games. Definitely worthy of their cult following.

The funny part about Re-Logic and Terraria is I think they genuinely believe themselves every time. Every time they put out a new update they go “okay, this’ll be the last one,” but then Ashley from the art team pipes up with a cool new idea and then they have to release another one.
Honorable mention: Midjiwan (the dev team behind polytopia). Not very known but the dev team is Amazing.
You don't even have to go into extreme detail, just a nod and a wink that things haven't gone terribly wrong.
project zomboid has a pretty chill community, the dev team seems that they really love their game and the community
That's because all the people complaining about their game moved on from slow decade waiting for npcs update they promised. All that's left is shills and devs teasing said chills with pictures for an update that would come out in two years lol

Fun fact, Re:Logic and Massive Monster have an indirect connection. That connection is Klei's game Don't Starve Together
They're always pushing themselves to make an already great game the best they can make it and that's a very respectable trait of them
did I mention I like terraria?
I’ll just drop this here: Aggro Crab seems like a cool studio. I like their games and general vibe.

you should make a video about small indie studios (1-4 people) that have made very impressive stuff like rain world having extremely impressive creature AI and ADOM that has extremely many things to do
Gotta admit.
Sniff sniff the Lamb’s wool.
Not mentioning Digital Extremes almost feels like a crime (?)
Cool video, as a fan of Cave Story since release i HATE Nicalis so much, not only they release a rushed version for Wii, but BOTCHED the first remaster... to this day you can't play the Time Trials because there's a bug that, the moment you open the leaderboards of that mode the game crash... that shouldn't be a problem unless YOU ARE FORCED TO OPEN THE LEADERBOARDS AFTER FINISHING A RUN (also, there's a couple of achievements that don't work)
the worst part is that one guy released a mod that fixes everything a couple of years after the original release but Nicalis never fixed that

Euphoric Brothers because their Garten of Banban series started out as absolute slop and had a merch button on just the first chapter, as well as not taking criticism well at all, including blocking RUclipsrs who criticize them and banning them from their discord and online game.
MOBEntertainment because they harassed/bullied someone into going to a mental hospital a long time ago when they were an animation RUclips channel (they've since apologized and reconciled with said person), very briefly selling NFTs (and said NFTs had details for their game's lore), and because for awhile they were more focused on selling merchandise instead of actually finishing and releasing more chapters to their game.
