as always, i am writing this late at night. 'tis a fixture of my bagel life at this point--- editing and rendering a suzume review til 5 in the morning, worrying about potential counterarguments, suddenly finding souta munakata attractive because im just straight up that tired. i love my cat. idk im trying to transition to talking about daijin but its not working, because my brain is simply not working. makoto shinkai aunt tamaki uhhhh idk suzume is a film that exists its cool i guess i like it but this video is negative maybe some day ill make a positive suzume video pffffffftgftgvrtvgbtfr suzume iwato

The fact you called Daijin a villain makes me very sad 😔 Suzume was the real villain.

maybe the real villain was the friends we made along the way...

I live in Poland and I was 12 years old in back then, but I vividly remebered the reperts of the earthquake, tsunami and the desctruction of Fukushima power plant in 2011. So there is that, I don't think You have to be Japanese to connect the dots when watching this movie if you were born before late 2000s.

Suzume is already healed by herself, it's a journey to save herself again at that moment, i believe the plot is way more complex.

12:09 In the start, Suzume founds Daijin cute and feeds her fish, so Daijin likes her. But Daijin does not want to turn keystone again so she makes Souta a chair because initially only Souta wants to catch Daijin and make Daijin keystone again. Daijin is like a child but diety.
12:57 I agree with you that Suzume and Souta may be a little selfish asking Daijin to become keystone again, but also that Daijin is a diety and Souta is just a human. So diety don't want anything from humans/mortals but love/respect for their sacrifice. Also if Souta becomes the keystone, then who will continue their family tradition of being guards of Ever-After doors.
I understand Daijin is lonely since 100 years and needs company now ... but Daijin is not that sour now because Daijin knows that Suzume likes her and appreciates her for leading to her home in Tohoku all the way along. Also Daijin notices that Suzume desperately wants Souta to live and hence steps up, having a bigger heart, taking the biggest sacrifice to become keystone again.
14:09 Also about this half-baked loved story puffed into the main adventure story, Shinkai said in his interview that hw also is tired from making school boy-girl romance films. So he wanted Souta to be female and explore sisterhood. But the producers of Suzume doesn't like that girl-girl romance. So Shinkai said in his interview that he deliberately made Souta a chair so that audience does not focus much on this love story because it is a side story.
    What say?

Don't you think it being a love story should be at the core of it? The whole reason She goes back to save Souta is because she loves him. So, wouldn't it have been better if the romance was fleshed out and later when Souta became a keystone the audience can sympathise more with Suzume wanting him back? When I first saw the movie I was fine Souta being a keystone. The story could have been that Suzume losing Souta now has to learn to deal with losing someone.
Now that I think about it more deeply, the romance isn't that fleshed out properly. Which is intentional, as Shinkai says.
Honestly, the producers shouldn't have intervened. The sisterhood aspect makes Suzume wanting to get her sister back and it tackling the Japan's Tsunami incident would have been way-way strong. It could have leaned heavily on the losing your family aspect.
That would have made it a masterpiece. And maybe replace Souta with Serizawa and people would have gotten the slight romance aspect (more like shipping aspect) as well. But she going to the other side and rescuing her sister (a family member who lived with her since her mother died) vs a guy she met a week ago.

Suzume's story is far better than the story of shinji ikari. For they both ask the same question but respond with different answers. Suzume is more uplifting and is motivational towards her challenges while shinji is consumed by the grief and loneliness without anyone to support him. Yes shinkai's stories may revolve around the same theme of star crossed lovers trying to overcome disasters. But they approach that challenge far better than what evangelion did. At least Suzume and Souta got to live a positive life together in the end. While shinji though is one of the sole survivors of a apocalyptic event with being lonely forever in a red colored ruined world with the giant head of rei lilith.

Shinkai wanted it to be a Yuri romance but changed it by pressure from production and as I reimagined it as he envisioned it , It kinda made sense and would have made it much better (my take)👀😂

When they drive at the end of the movie you can see they're driving through an abandoned town and signs warning them of radiation. So suzume was probably living near Fukushima.
