I think calling the relationship between the two main characters romantic isn't completely accurate, I don't view Souta and Suzume to have a relationship in the same way as Taki and Mitsuha or Hodaka and Hina, partially because there is a larger age gap but with Souta and Suzume it seems much more like she just gets a bit of a crush on him but really just cares a lot about him as well, and he never displays any kind of interest in her that way, just cares for her more in a brotherly way, which I am Not complaining about because of, again, the age gap lol

I like it more than WWY a lot, still think it falls short from reaching Your Name, but that’s not much of a diss. I love all three of them

Shinkai cinematic universe confirmed. There were spots of Your name characters in Weathering with you, and now I saw the same office lady on the Tokyo train, who sit next to Mitsuha, now sitting next to Suzume, and also busy with her phone.

As a first time watcher of Shinkai’s movies; I walked into this one without watching Your Name or Weathering with you! And boi it took me by surprise. The animations are surreal and the concept, to me, is something I hadn’t heard before. As you said in your video, if this was the only movie you watched without watching the other two, which is my case, I quite enjoyed the movie for what it had to offer. I did feel the music that was promised in the trailer was not delivered, as the theme song doesn’t play till the credits; sucks. But hey, given that you get to sit after the movie in the moment to take it all in whilst the Title song being played was an experience by itself.
Maybe if I watch the other two movies now, idk if I’ll still feel the same way but I guess I’ll never know or idk if I should 😄
Good video btw! 👏🏽 I’m happy with the rating and I second that. Would recommend to watch, just for itself irrespective of how good it is compared to the other two of Shinkai’s movies.

I've only seen it once but for me it's WWY > YN > Suzume. Worth pointing out that's also the order I watched those movies in, so potential bias there. For me the music is great, but just thought that it didn't really fit whatever was happening on screen at times (not a lot, but it happened). Besides that, I did feel kind of weird watching a romance grow from a 16/17yo with a 20/21yo. Not just that, but also between a girl and a chair. That maybe sounds like a stupid critique, but it made it harder for me to understand/follow the development of feelings throughout the movie.
Story-wise I think it is beautifully done. Especially for people who experienced the disasters from 2011 in Japan, this movie must've meant a lot. Must've brought a lot of memories back, and with that emotions. I can see with why a lot of people like this movie from a story perspective. But from a romance perspective, which [apparently] is the mindset I watched it with (unintentionally), I had a harder time really enjoying this and ended up confused a lot of the time. I wholeheartedly agree that as a series this might've been better. I'm really glad you mentioned the pacing, 'cause that is something that felt off for me as well but couldn't really point out what it was.

i feel like my biggest issue is that radwimps didnt shine really at all in this movie. in the last few, radwimps played a big part, and the ost to both weathering with you and your name has some adorable moments, but radwimps doesnt even sing until the credits.

Yeah I agree, it’s definitely a downgrade compared to the last two even though I still loved the music here. I don’t think much can ever top WWY soundtrack for me.

Ikr, that was one of the core of shinkai movie when we are in climax scene then radwimps will play their song, i was waiting the whole damn time for radwimps unfortunately it was only at the end after they solved the problems
I still enjoyed it though, i think the pacing of the movie and content was much better than your name and weathering but only falls in the climax scene, felt empty for me

I've now seen both the sub and the dub. Which I'm glad I did; while you can never experience again the wonder of this type of story that you did the first time, on the second view you get to see some details setting up the plot twists and the circular points being hidden in the open. I also have a bit of a "animation school dropout's" fascination with the differences between the literal translations in subtitles vs. what animators have to do to cover for different pacing of language presented onscreen and more "Americanized" dialogue ideas in the dub. Sometimes this works better than some hard-core anime fans give due, and sometimes some Westernization does water down the drama (I'm thinking of one specific moment, but can't write about without a major spoiler in a suspenseful moment of the transition from the second to third acts; but different issue, I'm also wondering if one character's motivations appear clearer at an earlier point in the dub version because of translation of Japanese in the sub, editorial decision in the dub, or just my already knowing the plot twist on the second viewing...
Anyway 1) I think if anyone saw this first, it would likely be their favorite of what I'm calling "the disaster trilogy" (even if I missed any the connections that were in the previous line of films from Garden of Words through Weathering...) The problem, of course, is that most people seeing this have almost certainly seen YN and WWW already, and no matter how much you can improve on certain aspects as a director, if you keep telling the same story repeatedly, small improvements to already great things... 2) I agree that the pacing, specifically the frenetic "what is going on" of the first two acts, vs. the more straightforward "road trip" vibe of the last act made it less than perfect, as enjoyable as everything else was. 3) On the other hand, basing this world-building on real life disaster events (the Great Kanto earthquake; and with that first visual of a boat on a building I knew the 3/11/11 quake and tsunami were going to be a big plot point) I felt made the supernatural suspense more visceral than the previous two films.
If you haven't already, watch it a second time with your critical eye. I found it to be a different, but no less enjoyable an experience.

It's Looks JUST LIKE that. But, I'm not a big Anime movie fan. But it was cool.

@@Bunny11344 really????? TBH I get it but what makes it "Better". Some times they over act it,so then when it's dub many think it's boring or lackluster because the Japanese VA accent sounds that we don't .
Idk Dubs have been for while up to snuff. Crunchyroll for me is worse then funimation. I like the VA and know they truly love doing it. It's a new age my friend

@@hollowify_tensa_zangetsu I think I just didn’t like that particular English voice actor in general. Her voice was old and definitely not a 15 year old girl she sounded like she could’ve been 48

I haven’t watched his previous 2 films but I enjoyed Suzume quite a bit. Both the art and the soundtrack were mesmerizing, and while I feel like the story was pretty weak as a whole (like 3/10, didn’t do much for me at all) I still liked the characters and the themes of the movie.

    • @itszaque
      @itszaque Год назад +1

Honestly if the story just did a better job in the relationship department it could have been a 10/10 for me. I loved all the characters but I never felt emotionally invested in the 3 biggest connections Suzume has (that being her one with Sota, her one with her aunt and her one with the cat/keystone).

    • @dmin5782

Your Name and Weathering With You are better, imo. It's a 7/10 for me, good animation, good side characters, but forgettable leads and weak story, inconsistent pacing, even the music this time didn't leave the same impact as YN and WTY.

Good movie. I did not see WWY but I did see YN. Anime has its own special place in film since it can depict elements which are difficult (even with CGI.) I haven’t seen a ton of Anime but I think Anime would be an easy way to show mythical characters such as those seen on Spirited Away. One possibility for Anime would be to show a protective spirit who’s intent is to make sure that the protagonist survives to accomplish his/her destiny. Perhaps a spirit leading a lost hiker out from the woods or close enough to a place of rescue. A voice which encourages the protagonist or a shadow of beauty too irresistible to ignore. But this is only a vehicle so as always a strong story is needed to cement the entire package.

I think most western film critics/ review misses a massive point about the movie. It really isn’t a romance movie and if you understand it’s context with Japanese history, the story hit really differently. I guess without spoiling it, for those of you that watch the film, the date shown in the diary is very important.
