    WORTHLESS TAG SPAM: cracks knuckles rolls neck stretches vigorously breaks back Call of the Night is an anime from Japan about Kou Yamori going out into the night and finding gasp NAZUNA NANAKUSA! And guess what? This video is ALSO about Monogatari! Which is... really hard to explain... toothbrush scene. Hachikuji scene. Various other appealing scenes. Araragi Koyomi and Senjougahara Hitagi and Tsubasa Hanekawa and Oshino Shinobu (for good measure). This video is also about TOMOYUKI ITAMURA and his AWESOME contributions to Call of the Night's epic directing! Tatsuya Oishi Akiyuki Shinbo. CotN is by Kotoyama and Monogatari is by Nisio Isin. Bakemonogatari Kizumonogatari Nisemonogatari Nekomonogatari Monogatari Series: Second Season Hanamonogatari Tsukimonogatari Owarimonogatari Koyomimonogatari Owarimonogatari Season 2 Zoku Owarimonogatari. Just for good measure. It's late. I want to go to bed, but I'm too busy writing tags. It's literally past midnight. I'm like one of the characters in the show, except instead of using the night to escape societal pressure, I use the night to feel more pressured to provide more videos to try and make my hobbies evolve a la Pokemon into a career. Such is life.

      I don't think interesting visuals can ever be pointless. Anime is a visual medium. Style is substance. Amazingly well put together video. Watching through Call of the Night, I knew it had too much similarity and checking the cast, of course the directory worked on Monogatari. Although I do not agree with some points, like the part where where you said Call of the Night is better directed than most of the Monogatari Second Season. You see, as a Light Novel, Monogatari is not only one of the most unique things out there, it is also so much unlike an light novel, that is a miracle that we even got an adaptation at all in the first place. So yes, some of the shots do feel out of place, like they used them just for the sake of doing so, but that is because there is so much dialogue, they have to use deadpans and closeups otherwise they might as well make a PowerPoint presentation. With Call of the Night, they already had a storyboard to work with, and since they have the visuals, deciding on which shot to use and what time becomes a lot more easier.

    In general in both series we have all stereotypes: lolis, vampires, harem, fanservice, tsundere magic etc. However all of that is used to present very existential experience. Telling us to question everything and dont believe in anything blindly. When Bakemonogatari goes more into Jean Paul Satre existentialism. Call of the night goes more into Emil Cioran philosophy to deconstruct everything and through this criticism find freedom. Emil Cioran also had insomnia

    At 17:15 this scene really is symbolic to me for this one reason alone. This shot is very reminisent of a Thermal Camera and our boy Kou is full of heat which radiates a green aura meanwhile Seki is cold blooded and therefor she cannot emit a aura considering her vampire status and this attention to detail really sells the scene to me. It's no wonder why Vampires craves Humans as they lacks warmth.I believe she wanted to kill all humans was due to the fact that she may become too addicted to a Human's love and affection and she wouldn't know what to do next or how to feel. So essentially she resisted her urges for so long which lead to her reaching breaking point. This tension packed moment is so good if you read the room. The whole Show but don't Tell motif says it all and that is why I genuinely love Call of the Night.

    I'm glad you clarified that Shinbo doesn't really direct Monogatari but it's worth noting that ultra-wide shots, horizontal same-plane shots, abrupt artstyle shifts, slow motion off-kilter panning shots can all be found in Shaft series/ episodes that Itamura didn't work on. These directing traits I attribute to Shinbo. Although that cutout style in Madoka and Zetsubou Sensei is all Yukihiro Miyamoto.

      I sorta skipped over this in the video for time reasons, as I was more concerned with simply proving the link between Monogatari and Call of the Night, but most of the stylistic tics in Itamuragatari were also present in Bakemonogatari. Itamura largely carried them over in order to keep the series stylistically consistent, though many, myself included, would claim that he transformed them subtly and made them his own as time went on.

And Call of the night felt so similar to monogatari that it genuinely felt like it was the same universe.

Even though more than half of its shows are undeniably mid, their use of weird colors for dramatic scenes absolutely catches your attention. If anything, the one thing that says shaft to me are the less than second long screens with random text and those closeup eye shots with the camera shutter sound effect which punctuate conversations in pretty much every episode. Also Akio watanabe's art style and the madoka/hidamari sketch art style, though admittedly those do appear on other studios as well, just not as often.

    Yeah, I dunno. Something tells me that pinning the entire visual identity of your studio on a single director's style isn't the best way to do things. I think Studio Trigger has made more of an effort to not make every major series "The Hiroyuki Imaishi Show," and it seems like Imaishi's projects have been a little more experimental and not just his same style ad nauseum - and as a big fan of SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon as well as Edgerunners, I think both those trends are a good thing.
    I like Imaishi's series, I think Imaishi is a great director, but like... if you make someone eat the most delicious steak in the world for dinner seven days a week year-round, sooner or later you're gonna want literally anything but steak. I think that Shaft's over-reliance on Shinbo's style and their lack of compelling ideas when he's not involved kinda demarcate the limits of the sort of auteur culture you see in a lot of anime studios, but I'm not nearly well-informed enough to say anything about any of this for sure.

      @Crunchybagels  Год назад +2

      I think your argument does actually have merit, and was very well worded! Personally though, although all SHAFT shows fell roughly under the same style, after having been such a super fan of their studio for so long, I've realized that there are subtle differences between their shows depending on who other than Shinbo is working on it, and personally think that brought enough variation between each show to make the reliance on Shinbo's style work.

      @@Crunchybagels That's a good point, too. I think it's really cool to see how, you know... artists can be so heavily inspired by other artists and other series in their chosen medium, and still find ways to express their individuality and carve out something unique from well-worn material. But it sort of looks like SHAFT's horrendous management never really gave space to grow to the directors Shinbo inspired, and then moved on to greener pastures, taking the fruits of the efforts put toward iterating on his style with them.
      I don't know about you, but Luminous Witches and Assault Lily look so generic it's almost comical - and whether you love or hate SHAFT's style, no one could ever accuse their series of looking generic before this. Even the rough parts of Monogatari Series are so distinctive and unique that you can still feel SHAFT's oddball, but very meticulous style even through the really awkward action scenes in Owari and Hana. Luminous Witches in particular looks like the generic stock anime that a character would be watching on TV in another anime, and that is the last thing I associate with SHAFT.

      @@Yggdraseed Funny story--- the first draft of this video contained a mini-rant on how much I disliked Luminous Witches due to how generic its visuals were, but I had to cut it since it was too far beside the point lol

    I appreciate the info but I gave COTN a go and couldn't get into it after the first episode. Was hoping for something that would have sated my Monogatari fix, but the characters just didn't do anything for me, or had a feeling like it was a show that kinda stood out from other shows. Monogatari did this well and more recently Chainsaw Man did a great job of grabbing me.
