Does a 2008 Mac Pro make ANY Sense in 2023?
Quite honestly editing this video wasn't too bad at 25% preview quality; which means 360p. This machine is definitely obsolete these days but the performance that it does have is rather surprising given that it is based on the Core 2 series after all.

    You do know there was also a 4gb version of this? The reason why it did well for people on the go like me was its low weight and thinness plus separating the tablet from the keyboard allowed me to have better entertainment than my cellphone in places where there is no TV or large monitor. It was never meant to game but its great for media consumption with out wearing out my shoulder with all the bags I'm forced by work to carry. I wouldn't have gone for Ubuntu. Puppy Linux would fly on that. The laptops it faced off were bulky and heavy.

    I have one i got used back in '16. Its the 32GB version. I still use it a lot for VNs (whether or not one would consider those as games is subjective, but they are available on steam...) and some PS2 era games (would you believe Flatout 1 and 2 work well?!) Still kicking stones around with Win10. Performance settings are set to performance. So crunchy text, no animations, etc. And ram is always near 100% with heavy use on page/swap file. But its the perfect size for what VNs work with 32 bit and the battery, despite being 10 years old, still gives me over 6 hours. Oh, and while it doesnt meet the minimum specs at all, IT RUNS DDLC!!! An easy way to bring Monika around on the go in MAS. Albeit notably laggy. Sizable micro SD and a matte screen protector are my friends to make it somewhat relevant. The only real current equivelant to this as a windows tablet comvertable is probably a surface go, which is way out of my price range and has just as bad, if not worse reviews to justify replacing it yet. That all said? It is woefully slow once you try to browse the web. Also, while it turns on surprisingly fast, opening programs and games are also worthy of playing the Jeopardy theme in your head as nothing happens for 20 seconds.

    Back in the day, we used to think all Macs could play were educational titles like Pajama Sam and Putt Putt, or super solvers... Try American McGee's Alice, Diablo 2, Clive Barker's Undying, SNES9x, Connectix VGS (PS1), Tomb Raider games, starcraft, warcraft, etc.. Despite the iMac's success, I still consider it a marketing disaster because it was mainly advertised to schools and libraries rather than the home user :/ I would have rocked the hell out of an iMac had I owned one. I held onto a 600MHz Pentium 3 until around 2003..

    • @DimondDoesTech

      To a large degree I think you are true but honestly not completely. There more than likely kids who did realize that Macs could also play actual games but most didn't. I mean hell look at what Google is doing with them sending a metric boatload of chromebooks to schools. Most kids will think that they are just for work (and they are because they are locked down) but other kids will eventually get older and want their own chromebook and will find that they'll be able to play proper games on it. TLDR yeah it was a marketing disaster but not a complete failure.

    It still can do almost everything (I know a person who uses Q6700 with 8GB of RAM, SSD drive and GT610 VGA card for web surfing and online video watching on daily basis in 2023) but not worth keeping it as main computer. 3-4th gen core systems are virtually given away in 2023 (one can buy 4th gen i5 with 8GB of RAM and 240GB SSD drive for 50 EUR in Lithuania where I live), so let's just keep a warm place in our memory for legendary machines which lasted 15 years and retire them. Ivy bridge will live even longer.

      Yeah 3rd and 4th gen core machine really are where its at for the oldest system you can still get away with running 99.9% of programs with at least some amount of speed. But as you say... yeah browsing the web is still fine on the Q6600 and even is just about manageable on core 2 duo systems as well. I had one of these. Id bet a device between 11" and 13" (with some thin bezels) a high end 15-25w current gen CPU, and a 120hz display in a tablet paired to a keyboard dock akin to this design would sell well. If the manufacturer were truly daring, they could kill two birds with one stone by adding a battery, a dedicated GPU, an m.2 slot along with some extra ports and an SD card slot (if not on the tablet itself). Something like this may be a touch thicker and heavier than the current crop of 13" ultra-portables but without such things, the device would be top heavy and fall over. If all of this is done through a USB C port in the docking base or via a bidirectional proprietary connector with substantial bandwidth for the GPU and M.2, the tablet could be positioned backward in the dock, allowing for drawing capabilities and, depending on the shape of the tablet portion itself (it'd have to be flat on both the front and back), the ability to be docked/closed with the screen facing outwardly so you wouldn't necessarily need to find a place for the keyboard if you want to use the device as a tablet. The keyboard dock would likely be reasonably thick and weighty, as previously mentioned, so I'd guess there would be room for a stowable pen in the casing of the dock. All of these aspects would be a significant bit more inexpensive to design, from what I can tell. The manner by which manufacturers strive for laptops to be razor thin puts significant emphasis on thermals due to the flattening of ventilation. A lot of these devices teeter between fanless radiator designs and those with fans that push less air than most people do breathing casually. A few more millimeters and spacing between the base and screen would allow for a significant amount more surface area for cooling along with larger and more thermally efficient fans where they can actually pass significant airflow without sounding like a small vaccum cleaner!

    • @DimondDoesTech
      @DimondDoesTech 11 месяцев назад

      You know there is actually something quite similar that already exists as to what you're alluding to. Its an Asus ROG thing thats a tablet with a I think 45w dedicated GPU and 28w CPU or something along those lines and its VERY expensive.

      I can indeed share a bit of info. The BIOS has built in options to overclock the CPU (if you have an HK series CPU) to do overclocking or you can install XTU to do more custom overclocking. However to overclock the GPU all ya need is MSI Afterburner and you just need to adjust the Core and Mem frequencies until you can get them to be as high as they can be without crashing in game.

Will soon replace with the RTX2080Ti, locally purchased used with a waterblock (incl. original parts: backplate, frame + fan assembly) for $274. Will sell off the waterblock kit for 40~50 dollars...so net it is about $230 out of pocket. The 1080Ti will replace a 1080 in one of my kid's rigs. Every now and then, a deal arrives on the local used market that is compelling. I am more than happy to buy a nice used card than shell out funds for a new card of equivalent performance. @@DimondDoesTech Would certainly spring for a 3080Ti if the prices (used) were a bit lower. To date, I have yet to see a decent/working 3080Ti for under $500 where I live. Still more than 2x what I paid for a good 2080Ti. With a family in tow...and four PC's in the household...an upgrade on one PC implies an upgrade on at least 2 other PCs! Hence, I have settled upon flagships that are 2 generations behind current release and prefer local used purchases where I can inspect the merchandise before committing.

      2080 Ti is the fastest officially supported GPU. I've heard that some 30 series cards work in it but that you have to do a whole rigamarole to get them to work.

    Hello, very cool and useful video, like - subscribe) I am new to this topic of Alienware Graphics Amplifier)Can you please help me? I have an old Dell Alienware 17 R3 17.3" Intel Core i7-6700HQ/ 16Gb DDR4/ SSD m.2 256Gb+HDD 1Tb/ nVidia GTX 980M 8Gb+Intel HD 530. I have an opportunity to buy Alienware Graphics Amplifier, and a graphics card to it, but I don't know what kind, can you advise the maximum option for this processor ? As far as I understand there is no point in buying a 1080 TI or higher as the processor is a bottleneck, AMD RADEON cards I haven't touched, I just don't know anything about them. I understand that i7 - 6700HQ already quite a weak processor, the stock 2.6GHz, turbo boost 3.3GHz, although in some forums I read that if the BIOS enable Perfomane mode, the processor can accelerate to 3.5GHz, as long as the temperature does not exceed 90, otherwise it resets to 3.3GHz. I will solve this problem with liquid metal, one of these days I'll give it to the master for relubrication and replacement of thermal gaskets. Can you help me decide if it's worth the hassle and expense, and if I can get something acceptable if I still bother with this idea?

    • @DimondDoesTech
      @DimondDoesTech Год назад

      Liquid metal will kill your laptop! Do NOT use it! Use a better alternative such as Arctic GC Gelid Extreme. As far as a GPU is concerned I'd go GTX 980 Ti/ GTX 1080/ RTX 2070 and no faster for that CPU.

    I just got a alienware graphics amplifier for my alienware 15 R4, dell said it wouldn't work but I got it to work with a RTX 3070. I have some interesting results. First it works great. I am able to run hunt showdown over 100fps when before it ran at 20 - 30. The interesting part is my on board nvidia 1060 DGPU is running with my nvidia 3070 eGPU they run at the same time. If I run a game the nvidia 1060 will be at 30 percent utility while the RTX 3070 is a 99 percent utility. It runs great like this but I don't understand how it can do this. Any thoughts?

    • @DimondDoesTech
      @DimondDoesTech Год назад

      What on earth? I've never heard of that being a thing. The only thing I can guess is that perhaps its leaving 8 lanes for your 1060 and 4 lanes for the 3070? (cause thats the AGA bandwidth limit) Otherwise that is really strange.

      @sipenarekbecha7193 Yeah it's almost like it's running in SLI. From what I've read, the on board GPU is supposed to turn off but in my case they both are processing at the same time. Which I imagine is granting me extra performance. I can't test it because I can't get the board GPU to stop running.
