  • I had a lot of fun doing this one! If I had more thermal headroom I could probably match stock i7 6700K performance which is just nuts!

    It's really nice to see how old stuff holds up with the features that were meant to future proof them .BTW You really nailed the narrative part of the video this time.

    I have an Alienware 13R3, purchased in 2016, with a Core i7-7700HQ @ 2.80Ghz. Sadly, the CPU is locked and as such, I can't perfom any undervolting or overclocking, but I was thinking about getting an Alienware graphics amplifier to extend it's life spam, but I'm not sure if it's worth the money at this point. Would you say it will let me keep the machine for 2 more years or so?

    • @DimondDoesTech
      @DimondDoesTech  Год назад +1

      You actually CAN undervolt a locked CPU! Although as far as the Alienware graphics amplifier goes, don't get one of those because the dock cable is made of unubobtainium. However you can just use a regular thunderbolt 3 GPU enclosure to get an eGPU with your machine. Even still I don't think it's worth it for your machine did to the low all core turbo speed (3.4GHz) as most TB3 enclosures start at $200 and you still would need to add a gpu bringing the price up to $450 for a 1080 Ti in an enclosure like that.

    I've got the 17 R3 with the graphics amplifier... I'm going to follow your lead and upgrade the card to the 2080. BUT- can you share some info on the overclocking? Is there maybe a video on it?

    • @DimondDoesTech
      @DimondDoesTech  11 месяцев назад +1

      I can indeed share a bit of info. The BIOS has built in options to overclock the CPU (if you have an HK series CPU) to do overclocking or you can install XTU to do more custom overclocking. However to overclock the GPU all ya need is MSI Afterburner and you just need to adjust the Core and Mem frequencies until you can get them to be as high as they can be without crashing in game.

    I just got a alienware graphics amplifier for my alienware 15 R4, dell said it wouldn't work but I got it to work with a RTX 3070. I have some interesting results. First it works great. I am able to run hunt showdown over 100fps when before it ran at 20 - 30. The interesting part is my on board nvidia 1060 DGPU is running with my nvidia 3070 eGPU they run at the same time. If I run a game the nvidia 1060 will be at 30 percent utility while the RTX 3070 is a 99 percent utility. It runs great like this but I don't understand how it can do this. Any thoughts?

    • @DimondDoesTech
      @DimondDoesTech  Год назад +2

      What on earth? I've never heard of that being a thing. The only thing I can guess is that perhaps its leaving 8 lanes for your 1060 and 4 lanes for the 3070? (cause thats the AGA bandwidth limit) Otherwise that is really strange.

      @sipenarekbecha7193 Yeah it's almost like it's running in SLI. From what I've read, the on board GPU is supposed to turn off but in my case they both are processing at the same time. Which I imagine is granting me extra performance. I can't test it because I can't get the board GPU to stop running.

    What up man nice video showing the capabilities of old hardware! I have a Alienware 17 r4 with a i7 6700hq and an Alienware amp with a 6750xt red devil! But for some reason my vr quality is absolute dog ****. I can’t run anything even at the lowest settings! I get the average fps at like 36 frames. Do you have any pointers on how to at least make my games playable?. I have the same set up as you (quest 2 link/ air link) but my elite dangerous game play is ungodly awful! All non vr games have a tremendous boost in fps vs the onboard 1070. Any info you could spare would be a great help my friend!

    • @DimondDoesTech
      @DimondDoesTech  Год назад +1

      Ok the reason for this really really stinks. AMD graphics cards, when it comes to VR on headsets like the Quest 2 and Pico 3/4 etc, the GPU must use it's encoder to encode the video signal and send it to the headset. On AMD GPUs, the drivers from 2021 and onwards (for 6000 series) and 2020 and onwards (for 500 series) borked the encoder and made it to where the quality is hot garboooge. I feel your pain there! If you want better VR quality and performance you'll have to sell that 6750xt for something like a 1080 Ti, aka no faster than a 3060 Ti. Even a GPU that meh will be bottlenecked by the 6700HQ due to the low clocks.

      2080 Ti is the fastest officially supported GPU. I've heard that some 30 series cards work in it but that you have to do a whole rigamarole to get them to work.

    Hello, very cool and useful video, like - subscribe)
    I am new to this topic of Alienware Graphics Amplifier)Can you please help me? I have an old Dell Alienware 17 R3 17.3" Intel Core i7-6700HQ/ 16Gb DDR4/ SSD m.2 256Gb+HDD 1Tb/ nVidia GTX 980M 8Gb+Intel HD 530.
    I have an opportunity to buy Alienware Graphics Amplifier, and a graphics card to it, but I don't know what kind, can you advise the maximum option for this processor ? As far as I understand there is no point in buying a 1080 TI or higher as the processor is a bottleneck, AMD RADEON cards I haven't touched, I just don't know anything about them.
    I understand that i7 - 6700HQ already quite a weak processor, the stock 2.6GHz, turbo boost 3.3GHz, although in some forums I read that if the BIOS enable Perfomane mode, the processor can accelerate to 3.5GHz, as long as the temperature does not exceed 90, otherwise it resets to 3.3GHz. I will solve this problem with liquid metal, one of these days I'll give it to the master for relubrication and replacement of thermal gaskets.
    Can you help me decide if it's worth the hassle and expense, and if I can get something acceptable if I still bother with this idea?

    • @DimondDoesTech
      @DimondDoesTech  Год назад

      Liquid metal will kill your laptop! Do NOT use it! Use a better alternative such as Arctic GC Gelid Extreme. As far as a GPU is concerned I'd go GTX 980 Ti/ GTX 1080/ RTX 2070 and no faster for that CPU.
